While I wouldn't go so far to say that I don't think they should ever be translated, in translation I think it is an absolute necessity to do so. But I agree with you 100% as to the trickiness of translating them, and the cultural complexity of curse words.
yeah, in my prev. post I probably forgot to add "literally", as in they should never be translated literally. otherwise you've hit it on the nail, with the phrase "cultural complexity"; they sure are tricky...
and I agree with Bingo's above points. I ALWAYS wear my seat belt, even for the shortest trip, say the greengrocer's. Just because you never know. You never know what might happen to you (i.e. sudden loss of control of the vehicle) or to the other drivers.
When going out with people, if I'm driving that night I NEVER drink.
On these two things I never make exceptions.
Now, as for smoking, I don't smoke by habit. Once in a while I will have a cigarette, just to celebrate something like an exam, or because it's too goddamn cold and I want something warm, or to "shock" my friends who never saw me smoke (for a laugh). [and everytime I smoke I'll cough like there's no tomorrow LOL]
I know smoking is bad for one's health, and I think many smokers are well aware of that too.
Alchool, just like water, is to be taken with moderation. I don't always follow this one, but hey, pobody's nerfect!
