For the life of me though, I can not figure out what is "racist" about the scene.  IIRC, they also zoomed to remove the animated nudity.

Wow....it's pretty damn blatant to me :\

It is pretty racist.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

... so there is this centaur... and she's black.  And?

It is how she is drawn (smaller than the other centaurs), and the fact that she is subservient to the other centaurs (almost seems to be taking pleasure in shining up those hooves)...

Yet all the cherubs and satyr are caucasian and are tending to the adults.  Pretty much all children, regardless of color are doing the work.

Is the offense the TYPE of work?  That sounds like a stretch to me.

Although I'm opposed to any movie having characters erased from them, and this is a product of it's era, I have to wonder what Walt and his animators were thinking putting such an anomaly into a mythological setting. Especially when you have those zebra centaurs attending Bacchus who are not drawn as stereotypes.

And Disney should really stop marketing Fantasia as a movie for kids anyway. My experience with the 70's and 90's theatrical reissues was that many kids get really bored with it when Mickey is not on screen, or get the screaming meemies even before Night on Bald Mountain. ;)

I think they were trying to draw a parallel.

You have mythological creatures, but it is also the Old South.  All the cherubs look like blond baby Elvises(sp?) or something, the lady centaurs are like southern belles, etc.

Of course I could be reading too much into it.  Still, people today go out of their way to be offended by things.

Btw, I remember sitting through Fantasia in a theater when I was a kid... and it was dull then too.  It has never been, and never will be a film for kids.

QFT on both accounts.  It was originally very much a film for upper crust adults.

Anywho, back on topic.

I was watching the Fantasia Legacy DVD tonight and Roy explained how when they wanted to restore the roadshow version for the DVD, Deems Taylor's voice work was unusable.

They faced the choice of having a mix of Deems' and new voice work, or completely replacing the voice over.  They felt it was better to do the latter.

Which brings me to this preservation.  I haven't checked the run times or compared the laserdisc audio with the DVD, but the laserdisc wouldn't be the roadshow version (since that was restored for the DVD).

Aren't you faced with the same issues?  That is, the laserdisc has SOME Deems, but not enough to completely replace the DVD voice overs.

That's why I am cutting what is on the dvd to fit with the audio. I have watched the 90/91 version my whole life, so I can live without the intermission, and the Rite Of Spring mishap narrations.

Here is a video I just found on Youtube. Some guy apparently had the same idea I have, but he never did more with it, and from the sound of it, he used the LP version. It just proves it could work.

Is it just me, or does he have a massive sync problem there.

Yeah, that is something I will work on. I think he just slapped it in there.

I do have a mediocre mp4 version of Patoral uncut.  I'm not sure it's as racist as people keep thinking it is, but that never stopped Disney from censoring before.

As far as stuff to add, might I recommend segments that were intended for Fantasia 3?

There is DVD footage of Destino, Little Matchgirl and One By One.  I've never seen Lorenzo anywhere at all (by I'm still looking).

Lorenzo's gonna probably be on the Fantasia Blu-Ray. They're putting all four of the shorts together into something called Fantasia World.

Also, Claire DeLune would probably be worth splicing into this edit. Was cut out pretty late from the original Fantasia as it was running pretty long already.

I might make it a bonus feature. I am not going to make any promises, but I will see what I can do with it.

I would really like to have 2 audio tracks for this one.

1. with the NEW soundtrack and Deems Taylor's voice

2. with the OLD soundtrack and Deems Taylor's voice

I still need to learn more about making a dvd like this, but I should be able to learn from the how to section easily.

I might do the same for Clair De Lune. I have a newer recording of the same transcription, it is just timed a little different.

Claire De Lune was restored and appears on the Fantasia Legacy DVD (the 3rd disc in the 3-disc version)... but that's probably where you planned on getting it from.

Yeah, I am just talking about what I want to do with it. I want it to have a new soundtrack with an alternate choice of the original sound mix like I am doing for the rest of the film.

Well, bad news on the Fantasia Blu-Ray. World's been scrapped, Destino being the sole one of the 2006 shorts to make it to the set.

That's Disney for you.

TheDigitalBits.com reported today that there will be a new take on Pastoral's censoring on BD.  "More seamless" using newer digital tools.

What got me, is they commented that bootleg uncensored cuts are available if you know where to look.

I wasn't aware of this.  If we don't know where to look, who does?

Might be of interest if you were to go a little more of a radical route on this project, but I've recently checked out "The Disney that Never Was" and it has the original program for the project when it was still "The Concert Feature".

Originally went Sorcerer's Apprentice, Nutcracker Suite, Bald Mountain and Ave Maria, Cydalise and the Faun (which eventually became Pastoral), Ride of the Valkyries (which is in storyreel form on the Legacy set), Claire de Lune, Animal Ballet (became Dance of the Hours) and Rite of Spring.

I would love to go radical with this project, I just haven't got the skills to do it. I also wouldn't know what I could do to change it.

I have heard the version on blu ray is the censored version, which i why i am boycotting the release.
