Where did you hear this? Facebook? Twitter? ;) I don't really "follow" anyone by those means, but maybe I should. Is there a way to automatically receive "tweets" on the computer without having to just randomly check for new posts, or is that just a phone thing?
It was a hidden conversation on FB actually, I figured since it was something he already had everyone worried about that I could save him the trouble of repeating himself.

Oh, so that is how you pulled of the breathtakingly awesome new Cloud City mate - it is by far my favorite thing about the trailer. I was wondering...

Ady: I've just seen your wonderful ESB thetrical version, and I wondered if you're planning to add some more TIE to chase the Falcon after rescuing Luke.

The Imps planted a homing beacon, yes, but they should go on with the show and send a whole squadron to make it believable so the Rebs don't get suspicious. What do you think?

PS: first time after 30 years I notice that escaping Slave I had no windshield at all!!! XD

Oh, BTW, isn't its fleeing speed a little slow? Are you planning to speed it up just a little bit?

I have a question: in the original version of ESB at the end of the Hoth Battle, we see an AT-AT shooting down a snowspeeder, and there is a sort of airplane sound before it crashes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxAs1Q8Obxk

But in later versions the sound is almost gone! I think it was better with the old sound because it added more chaos to the scene (better feeling). Is it possible to re-insert the sound?

The old theatrical version that is out there on the internet (I think it is from the double dvd of ESB) is not that old, it doesn't have this sound OR transparent snowspeeders so you won't find the sound there. I think the sound only exist in VHS-versions that came before the Special Editions in 1997 (Maybe on laser disc if it excist?)

This sound effect was inexplicably (accidentally, most likely) removed from the 1993 "Definitive Collection" audio remix, which is what's present on the "Theatrical Version" disc in the 2006 2-DVD set.

The effect is there in the 1980 theatrical mix, and the 1985 home video remix.  I don't know if it's in the SE, because I haven't watched either version of the SE since I learned of this sound effect issue.

I'm fairly certain Ady will restore this sound effect, but I don't think he's confirmed it yet.  In fact, I'm pretty sure he's not working on the sound mix until after the video's done, so he's got some time before he has to worry about this!

(Also, not to thread-hijack, but if you want a DVD of the theatrical cut with this sound intact, dark_jedi will be releasing a DVD soon that has all the audio mixes included, along with a cleaned-up, anamorphic version of the 2006 DVD video.  You can learn more about this in the "Star Wars Preservations and Other Fan Projects" section of the forum.)

Thanks for the info! If there are any other sounds missing, I hope they will be re-inserted as well.

I think you're confusing ESB with ANH. The hyperdrive is deactivated in this one (they didn't expect Lando to betray them and help the Rebels escape, so they just disabled the ship as a not-very-good-precaution), and I'm not sure Ady wants to add too many fighters, as the three or four seem to be herding the Falcon just fine.

Awesome!

Then can I make an official request of Adywan to check the sound mix of the Walker weaponry and if possible add some major bass *whumps* to the AT-AT chin guns and at least restore what was in the sound mix before they remixed it out of the DVDs?

I know sound is also a major pain to edit, and adding another layer effect is tedious, but it never hurts to ask.

I always saw the chin guns as mounted howitzers and if you ever heard how heavy the blast is when one of those is fired, you'd understand my thinking.

But, I remember how loud the chin guns were in the theater in 1980.  It would be awesome to hear that again on the 5.1 surround.

I love added bass. I'm not sure the Hoth battle could use more noise as it seems pretty chaotic, but I think your idea is sound (having never seen the original version in theaters, anything is better than my VHS tapes).

I'm younger than most people here, but even I remember the VHS versions had a different sound... more powerful and distinctive AT-AT guns, and that snowspeeder crashing sound! The last one was perfect, I really don't understand why it's muffled in newer versions. It sounds like a falling plane, just enough to get the viewer uncomfortable and nervous, and to add to the tension of the battle.

While I don't remember the thumping guns, I do remember the plane crashing sound. I'm not sure if I would like it back or not, but I do find myself making the sound effect myself when I watch it!

Yeah some really good and wide specter bass rumbling would be nice in the Hoth battle, good for us with a top notch home cinema :)

I agree.  The sound on the Definitive Collection LD's and corresponding deluxe widescreen VHS set is much better than the 2004 DVD.  Much more depth.

Way awesome!

I saw Empire 96 times at one of the last Cinemescope theaters in the Chicago area back in 1980 and again during it's re-release in 81.

The one outstanding thing I remember well was that during that Hoth battle, you could feel the concussion of bass when the chin guns fired and any explosion on screen would go right through the bones.

ANH-R achieves that well during the battle of Yavin, it will be great to hear that dynamic again with the ESB-R.

One more reason to be impatient and giddy at the same time!

I haven't looked forward to a Star Wars release since Sith, and that good ol' feeling is back again!

Lord I love Star Wars.

I didn't read if you had already mentioned/fixed this already, but during the AT-AT attack on Hoth when Dak Ralter (Luke's gunner) is killed, Luke turns his head to look behind him and it appears that his yellow visor is on correctly as is in previous shots.

However in the shot immediately following, when he looks forward again, his visor is messed up (it's up too high.)

This would seem to be a continuity error. Have you discussed/fixed it yet?

It's possible it might have ridden up as he looked behind or when he turned back.

Those goggles look very tightly connected to the helmet and look how often Vader's helmet would stay put even though Prowse was turning one way or t'other.

If that is the case (and it's been a few months since I've seen ESB so I can't be sure) it really should stay as that would happen to Luke as much as happen to Mark.

Who is to say that he didn't pull it back into the correct position later while the Force/Camera/Audience wasn't looking?

Yes, but it didn't look like it was messed up/messing up in the first shot of him looking behind. Those two shots are one right after the other. Sure he could fix it again later when no one is watching, but I didn't see it move up in the first place. The scene goes from the visor being fine when Luke looks forward, to Dak dying and Luke looking back (with it still looking fine, though he is at an angle so maybe it's hard to tell kinda), to Luke looking forward again and it's messed up. There's no cut away for it to to have happened off screen.

Also, when Luke goes to Degobah, right after Luke says "You're lucky you don't taste very good," the panel in R2's head (that shortly afterward spews mud from it) can be seen ajar/popped open slightly before mud ever comes out.

One might argue that it had already popped open previously off camera and R2 can't close it yet because of the mud, but I always saw it as a glaringly obvious set-up for an upcoming effect (akin to seeing the bad covering of the breakable elevator door in the Death Star in ANH.) Like, you know that it's coming because that panel is messed up and so your eyes are drawn to it, making the effect less surprising.

What do you think? Ought this to be fixed? I would sure appreciate it if it was.

I'd like to see that fixed.  I've always noticed it myself.

Speaking of this shot, would it be conceivable to show some snowspeeder traffic in the upper right, and maybe an AT-AT close-in halfway passed by in the lower left (to add some scope)?

Nah, I think the audience's focus should be 100% inside the cockpit at this moment in the film. Plus, negative space on the screen is often part of the composition of the shot. Don't want to fill it with stuff unless it's really necessary.

I think one or two snowspeeders at the most wouldn't have the audience lose focus at any time. Especially not at the speed those speeders would fly by.

And while your at it (this is the nitpicker in me speaking BTW!) would you not be able to see the speeders guns etc from this angle much like you should see the nose of the Star Destroyers from the bridge windows

Heres a shot of the inside of the cockpit in a 3D program, you are quite right BarBar.

Wouldn't the speeders and the All-Terrain's (if any would be added), only be viewable in the bottom left? The way that shot shows it, it seems like he's high up in the air, taking a lower left turn downwards...
