The samples are really great, the color removal strips out a layer of information so you can appreciate the soundtrack but still retain a level of familiarity with the film.  Reminds me of the videos of the recording session videos where John Williams is leading the orchestra with the movie being played with the scoring marks for tempo (white bars which go across the screen) and other marks (large white circles) for moments he's set up to hit.  You can see a little of that in: (at around the 2:50 minutes in)

I've read such great things about both ABC and Dark Jedi's projects, I'd love to see this one. I'm not on the spleen (I get most of my stuff from the green demon), so I'll need to look elsewhere.

I'm glad it reminds you this, that's exactly the point... I mean: to see how it has been scored - despite unavoidable film versions edits, whatever they did after (reply I adress in the same time to Sadelaire's complain I read a few posts back).

I never spotted the white bars, or rather didn't noticed these were linked to the conducting. I recommand to watch Part 6 of this documentary to anyone who is interested, for the "Mynock Cave" recording sessions.

In the .nfo there's mention of cue sheets, are they available?  Would like to add them to the DVD_ROM folder.

I just watched it for the first time and even after reading D_J's reaction I didn't really expect how good this would have turned against the picture. We only stuck on the idea and made it and... WOW !!!... After seeing this it reenforces my thought than never a film has been scored so brilliantly and so deep in detail. The music, the orchestration, all is used to sustain the storytelling at the point, indeed, that the score itself would suffice.

Worth to notice - and I didn't realize while working at editing the music - that everything has been scored, and the silent parts remaining are very rare and short. It's also the first time I listen to 1) the whole score in a stroke 2) My final upgraded versions of all the tracks from the AE together (they are still dispatched on a few CD's).

I only watched this on computer, with good headphones though. This black and white version restored from the GOUT fits totally with the overall analog feeling of these recordings 'imo'. And I envy every one who will be able to watch it on TV with the right sound system !

I'm glad we've met to make that one D_J ! ;) You've made possible what I thought it would be for me: the cherry on the cake !

It was a pleasure working on this with you to ABC, it really was very cool watching this, and as you said, the silent parts are not that long at all, this will fit nicely on the shelf with all the rest of my Star Wars DVD's.

Yea it was snatched 45 times and barely any comments, but like I told you in PM's, I really could care less if anyone likes this or not, we made it because of something we came up with, You and I like it and that is all that matters to me, if you didn't live so far away I would have just sent it to you by post and would have been done with it.

It was fun ABC, I see there was a comment there(myspleen) from someone asking if we would do SW and ROTJ as well, I answered him already.

The audience/public isn't required to respond.  It's a societal thing, were taught to consume not get involved.  During one of the Ben Burtt CV panels he stated that the sound effects he added which were not commented on were the ones which worked the best. (the light saber being the prime example) That's one way of looking at things. All the projects around here would love to get intelligent feedback. You can always start a social networking page and get a bunch of 'I Like's.

Getting people to respond is a complex thing.  I thought my dvd with a self addressed and stamp included envelope (even used SW stamps) with a 20 question y/n thing would be easy for the public.  Gave up after 100+ with no replies.  (the current investigation is can I get 4-10 replies after giving out 400 dvds to all levels of fandom at CV...  My friend says not a chance.)

The fan SW projects just have a limited audience. If you've gotten 45 downloads that's what .5% of the OT.com members maybe 5% of the active ones. The response pecentage on most projects is discouraging; almost abysmal. It's that way for all creative outlets.

If I were you and was looking for a passionate audience, seek out the JW fans, they could be the ones to appreciate this project, and would be able to give you serious criticism since they're musically inclined. The problem is you never know what individual will latch onto your creative work. The OT.com population is potentially tapped out with the multiple projects all looking for attention. It's still early though, maybe they'll surprise you.

The great thing about this project for me is it shows you the challenge of the blank canvas John Williams had and how he filled it.

Your 'Ben Burtt' exemple shouldn't occur for real jobs. I have a similar job than his in another area, and as far as I'm paid for a product that someone (who expects a professional definitive product) will purchase, I won't request an evaluation note. If my director is OK, then it's OK.

Most people who download our projects take the time to track out both our threads and the stuff we have uploaded. This torrent took 6 or 8 hours for me to download. And if you decided to watch the film in its entirety it takes two hours. I don't see where's the problem then in taking 2 or 5 minutes to give the least feedback, intelligent or not. They don't have to be from "specialists" every time, one of the big weakness on this site definitely. I'm actually glad of the lot of feedbacks of all kind I received for the "Audiophile Edition", and I could have quote here for exemples some that probably took only 2 min to tip but are enough to make you understand the sound is such as no one of the CD releases has reached.

It is time for people who track down such projects to have conscience that if we do this for pleasure, we' re not forced nor meant in any way to warn about these, nor share these away. They also have to understand most of the time they're able to find these thanks to other's feedbacks when they do, what is a major point. We could have just dealed this project for ourselves by pm with D_J, and it's possibly what may happen for any other plan.

Of course, this one is perhaps not the "project of the year" in the preservation forum for most people. The statement here stands for a wider consideration of the matter.

It sounds a bit odd at first but the black and white picture with only the musical score to accompany it really does work.

I have seen other black and white versions of Star Wars films as well as others with various Isolated soundtracks but this approach tops all of those.

Thanks. May I ask what sounds "a bit odd at first" ? Our idea ?... Or its sound ? No offense anyway, just curious. I must say that I've such a poor TV equipment for watching this that it sounds miles away from what it gives on my hi-fi.

Great work and I also agree that it would be great to see all 3 films done like this should anyone ever fancy having a go at doing them.

A few words for DJ - going back 5 years, you captured every US Laserdisc release, the Japanese Special Collection and a couple US VHS sets - 39 releases in total - and got a similar response then to the one you are getting now...

I've said it to D_J by pm and am gonna say it here again - no offense at all through this comparison, please note: I love Adywan's ESB 1980 theatrical reconstruction, and the 1st idea for a B&W version with the score (though it has been done before) came when playing it that way and saw how the photography + the cleaning were great. However I noticed D_J's GOUT in B&W didn't have as much aliasing / or sharpening, what makes it to my eyes really better than what it would have given with the one that brought the idea. The contrasts also, after comparison, are imho, really more natural in D_J's and less blowing for the eyes. Also, I just hadn't this 'digital' feeling I had with the other.

I also stated that I would like to see A New Hope and Return of the Jedi done with the restored soundtrack over a black and white silent movie. However, I have read that you have no plans to restore either of those soundtracks.

 

Indeed. The time I spent on restoring ESB was at the expense of the two others... in a way. However the first drafts I made through the OT Savage may already give a nice result. They both received great feedbacks. I'd be curious to hear the film mixes however. Maybe I'll pm D_J about that, but I don't think about doing for now, unless I find in it a nice hobby for the heart of the winter.

Hi ABC and dark_jedi, this is a beautiful project and maybe one of the best preservations of the year. I like the clarity and quality of the music, and the fact that I can follow the storyline without the need of dialogs and sound effects. I'm sorry that I can't give you a more detailed review, I'm not a music expert, but what I can tell you is that this version of ESB made me feel glad and exhilarated.

Finally, if you decide to tackle ANH or ROTJ, I'll be glad to help you however I can.

Just sharing that thought, perhaps some haven't seen that this way:

I never noticed, until seeying this in B&W with the creepy music that the trap of Vader ended in a spider web (the carbon freeze set)! I always wondered why we couldn't see the end of this unrealistic set... Simply amazing ! :)
