I try to consider both sides (or more) of any issue I'm confronted with where there's a difference of opinion. I watched Ady's preview clips and dug out my DVDs to watch the original version. I have to say I agree with Ady on this.
I did the same thing. I thought, "Hmm, maybe BmB has a point. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and try to see it his way." I tried, but I just couldn't find any legitimate reason why one rebel killed in the escape dramatically alters the outcome or changes the tone of the entire battle/movie. It just doesn't, as far as I'm concerned. It's a very minor change that only heightens the emotional intensity of that scene. Until they jump to hyperspace, they are not totally safe, and I think at that moment in the film, we should feel elation, but also the sinking feeling that this victory will only further engender the wrath of the Empire. The rebels scored a victory, thanks to the ion cannon, but "they're not out of the woods yet" as they say.
It's a beautifully done sequence by adywan.
