Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!) — Page 21

Regarding a price for the set, here's what some random boxsets are going for on Amazon:

Rocky (6 movies): $50.99

Lord of the Rings (3 movies): $66.99

Matrix (3 movies): $70.99

Alien Anthology (4 movies): $97.99

Will we be getting all six SW films for $50? Not likely. In fact, I don't see them going for any less than $100. It's all in the name.

However, I honestly can't imagine middle class parents picking this up for their children if it exceeds $100, especially when all the films are down the aisle on DVD for <$15 each, or in $30 3-paks. $100+ may not be not "worth it", but it's a lot of money. Kinda the same way PS3 retailed for $600. It's worth it for the technology, but... ITS SIX HUNDRED FREAKING DOLLARS.

But I don't think Mr. Lucas has anything to worry about. Meh.

I'll go with between $75 and $100.  Probably in the $90 range.

More to the point, all of the fans who've cried that they'll never buy anything again are going to be suckered in by the deleted footage and such.

Most of these deleted scenes were on the 1998 Behind the Magic CD-ROM, although in poor quality given the day.

DVD's were still pretty new in '98.  And for a fully interactive CD-ROM, the quality was pretty decent.

Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic, but Lucas' position on the OOT seems to have softened a bit. The fact that he used the cost of restoration as an excuse, and not the "my vision" argument, makes me think that there may be a chance down the road, when the OT is eventually released separately, and they need an incentive to have people buy them all over again.

It's funny you said this because I thought the same thing after my initial anger of hearing about the SE-only boxset.

My only rationale is Lucas isn't including the OOT in this set, because that will give him a selling point for the next BluRay release.

Alot of the SE-defenders say, "Well, he isn't in it for the money, or he would release ALL the versions to maximize his profits."  Lucas maybe stubborn, but he isn't stupid, and we should never believe anything he says because he did release the OOT on DVD (albeit a crappy version) after saying those versions don't exist.

My theory:  If Lucas says the OOT will be remastered down the road, more fans will hold out for that release.  If he says the OOT is too expensive to remaster, then alot of people on the fence will relent and buy this edition.  Then in 2013, Lucas decides to remaster the OOT, and he doubles dips for a bigger profit.

As I said, the man is stubborn, but he aint stupid when it comes to making money.

There's yet to be a movie that involves a Blu-Ray double-dip that I know about. I'd like to hold out optimism for such a thing, but I just doesn't look likely, and even if it does happen, the memory of the GOUT suggests that things wouldn't look good if it did.

Keep in mind that Blu-Ray is fairly new (at least from a widespread adoption standpoint) and because of that, it's not surprising there haven't been many double dips yet.  Doesn't mean they aren't coming...

Aside from the OOT, there won't be anything left to pull out of the hat for a blu-ray double-dip.

There's always Clone Wars and the other TV series.

Though as a buddy of mine cynically put it, going from "They don't exist" to "they're low priority" is progress for Lucas .

There've been plenty of blu-ray double dips already. T2, Stargate, Full Metal Jacket, Predator and probably a bunch of others I can't think of right now. This Star Wars set will presumably only be a I-VI box with no individual SKU's. It's perfectly reasonable to assume we'll eventually see individual releases.

Yeah, it wasn't too bad really; it was very interesting at the time. I don't remember what I did with mine.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a nice example of a double dip...
So far, they just dipped once, when the EEs get released they will dip the 2nd time (and probably 3rd and 4th too, as I expect the EEs to be 3 ultra expensive separate boxes, one for each film).

A double-dip is the exact same movie released twice.

The EE's wouldn't be considered a double dip.

I don't know.

While a double dip doesn't neccessarily mean content was held back to make a second (or third, etc.) release more appealing... I think anytime content (especially the preferred cut of a film) IS deliberately held back, that it is not only certainly a double dip, but the worst kind of double dip.

I suppose the other thing regarding LotR is that the EE content was obviously available at the time when they released the theatrical Blu-Rays although i'm sure I read that Peter Jackson said the release was a studio decision and not his...

But, in this case, it was ANNOUNCED that they would be released later.  They're following the same release schedule as the original DVD release.  Plus, they don't repeat extras.  I think it's great...and I have no interest in the LOTR movies.  Once was good enough.

But you're right- when they announce that they're releasing another version at the the same time they release the first version... at least it takes the doubt about the double-dip out of the question... but I think it's still a double-dip.

How can we convince GL to put the OOT on Blu-ray?

Author

None of either trilogy will be any theatrical version.

no oot 77-83

no 70mm version of empire

no special edition 97

no theatrical prequels, also excluding the imax cut of attack of the clones and the different 35mm and dlp cuts of the film.

So why would any fan of the oot, the special editions from 1997, or the prequels be happy with this blu ray?

Also they probably won't be the same as the 2004 cuts either or the same prequel DVD's, the sound mix with be different or it we be an entirely different version of the film like Phantom menace being cut number 3 if it was re-color timed and cgi yoda added.

I don't even like the prequels and yet the versions i find to be even remotely watchable are the theatrical cuts like Phantom Menace.

Speaking for myself, I grew up with the original Star Wars movies and won't be buying any set that doesn't include the versions 1977, 1980, 1983 -- garbage mattes and all. I cannot accept any of the new changes to those wonderful movies.

I'm starting to think - with all due respect to this website - that this shouldn't be the place to air our misgivings about the impending Blu-ray release. We're arguing in a vacuum on this site - we need to discuss this on EVERY blu-ray review site that's out there, as THAT is where the powers that be look to gauge public reaction. As far as this site is concerned they'll just consider it the whinging of a few hardcore fans that are impossible to please and would congregate here anyways. If the discussions are spread the length and breadth of blu-ray internet land I think we have a far better chance of possibly instigating some change.

I'm with skyjedi on this. I won't even consider buying the OT movies on blu-ray if it doesn't at least include the '77-'83 originals.

I won't buy a non-theatrical prequel blu-ray either, horrible as the TPM Yoda puppet may look.

Lucas has committed the greatest crime in human history by destroying the originals. This is yet another step in strangling its life away.

Let's just all slit our wrists.

If you decide to do this, be prepared for a backlash from diehard George Lucas fans, and by that I mean those who love all the 2004 Special Edition changes, believe that Lucas really did have a vision in mind all along and basically can do no wrong.  I was monitoring a thread on Blu-ray.com that became pretty intense at times.  Opposition will also come from those who maintain that directors can do no wrong, for whom the phrase as the director intended is both utterly indisputable and self-evidently conclusive; and for whom anyone who does not accept that this is so is automatically to be treated as an idiot.  Perhaps some of you have the appetite for that kind of protracted online arguing, and if so I applaud you, but I have long since lost it.
