Lara Croft and the Something or Other is out today. I downloaded the demo... I wonder if I'll ever try it.
As fate would have it, my wife and I played the demo last night. I'm a pretty big fan of Tomb Raider games when they're good, and I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 games that have been released this generation. I especially liked the balance of action and adventure in TR: Underworld, the most recent disc release, so I was a little upset when I saw this was the direction they had taken for the next game. Then I heard it was going to be an XBLA game, and my heart softened to it somewhat, since it didn't seem designed to replace the series of full games.
And I'm here to say, both my wife and I really liked it. It's $15 and there are 15 levels, which maybe average about half an hour each, with some limited replay. It plays a little like the Lego co-op games and maybe a little more like the isometric Marvel games, but with just the two characters to focus on, the game can really make you think about how to use the differences the characters provide to solve the problems. My wife commented that it was similar to the interaction in the Splinter Cell 3 & 4 co-op missions (climbing each other to get higher, lowering ropes to each other, etc.) but not as complex.
Still, because I'm so cheap, I might wait a year to see if it goes on sale ever or wait for another good deal on MS points... but I think the game is in our future. (The future where we've finished Lego Batman, Indy and Harry Potter and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2).
*Warning: There is on-couch Co-op now. On-line co-op doesn't work until September sometime when the PS3 and PC versions are released.
