Jon Stewart hour long interview with George Lucas at CV

Collider.com posted an interview with George Lucas by Jon Stewart at Celebration V. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet (it is an hour long) but I'm sure it will be interesting.

http://www.collider.com/2010/08/15/jon-stewart-star-wars-celebration-v-stormtrooper-george-lucas/

Many people questioned Stewart when he didn't ask the hard questions when he interviewed Lucas on the Daily Show in recent times, this is why. You won't get invited to Celebration V and have a action figure made of you.

Not that I'm criticizing Stewart, I love him. And I thought his questions on the Daily Show were fair without outright attacking Lucas and the prequels etc.

Watching this on youtube and who the blazes is Jon Stewart?

The thing that gets up my nose the most is, yelling crowds of people sounding like a pack of wolves.

I just skip the video forwards to the interview. Yes I am STAR WARS fun but I hate yelling. Its noise!

For crying out loud! The first video part 1 what a load of noise and rubbish! I can’t hardly hear the audio its so low grade, I have to strain my listening abilities against this noise! What is this comedy hour because the first part is just lame?

This video would be better off with subtitles for the hard of hearing.

What you have lawn does it need mowing is the grass too long maybe a dog took crap all over it?

Wow I just skipped though the videos and the part where he mentioned "bluray" I just wasn’t impressed at all. I’ll wait till final release date along with technical specifications are announced, if it doesn’t say originals or DOLBY TRUE-HD Lucas and fox blurau can f*^$%^king well keep it.

I skimmed through the videos as well, and I'm a little dumbfounded at how awkward and trite the whole thing with Lucas was. (I'm also confused as to why Stewart was there, since I've never gotten the impression he was a SW fan, lol).

Anyway, it's basically Lucas just plugging his latest stuff... Mark comes out to introduce the ROTJ clip, and then Carrie comes on, cracks a couple jokes, and then it's over. Seriously. That's it? What a massive disappointment. It would've been interesting to have more time to actually talk to Mark and Carrie instead of resorting to cameos. Or did they have separate interviews?

Because of the Daily Show bit where he interviewed Lucas and Lucas plugged his book Blockbusting which he did not even write, lol.

The stuff with Hamill is cool though.  I wonder if they will have mark as a commentary on  the blu ray he was not on the 2oo4 dvd set.

One thing that does spring to mind is the actor’s performers coming in for an ADR looping session if any decided scenes are placed back into the film?

So don’t be surprised if Lucas turns around at the 11hour and slots a few scenes in.

Originals is formal and on every original fans mind.

I apologise if I seemed awkward earlier on in my first posting, but I have become quite cynical about STAR WARS over the past 10 to 15 years and do you blame me or blame Lucas for his persistent tinkering around with the originals shaping it into what he wanted in 1977 BS I think the guy just likes motorcars and as always liked to tinker around with it, to make it do better.

I like tinkering around with audio electronics because I’m naturally curious and then my cat also becomes curious as to what I’m doing. LOL

Stewart was funny. Lucas was awkward, seriously hard to stay awake whenever he spoke. Whatever, no one made me watch it. Mark was cool. Carrie was hilarious. The mention of the cut nude scene to get the fanboys all riled up had me chuckling, then the allusion that the Jabba porn scene was all imagined because of the drugs she was on had me out right laughing and worth the hour of my time.

Though out the duration of the interview you can tell Stewart is a big fan of the OT. He 's able to drop more references then George, or at least get them right, which is not all that surprising.

The 2nd last clip can be avoided if you don't watch the Clone Wars series, some rubbish about Darth Maul having a brother. Oh boy.

I can hear the sound of the tectonic plates of the EU grinding around that astonishing revelation.

They make SW references and jokes on The Daily Show quite often. Stewart was once reminded by a ghostly Leia voice how he used to fantasize about her!

Not to mention there are not one, but two Death Star models hidden in The Daily Show set. ;)

Were the audience members just a bunch of yes-people?  If the audience were comprised of real Star Wars fans,  I would think at least half the room would have booed when Lucas came out on stage.  I know if I had been there, I would have booed.

They jeered Jar Jar Binks. The only acceptable derision officially allowed at an officially sanctioned Lucasfilm event, officially.

Darth Paul?

That whole bottle of whiskey I drank last night was to try and erase from my brain the fact that Darth Maul now has a brother. Even though I'm trying to forget it, he will forever be known as Darth Paul in my mind - well done.

Hmm, I guess I remember a few references. I have to admit I stopped watching TDS on a regular basis in 2005... Once Steve Carell left and then Colbert moved to his own show. (So, yeah, I should definitely check out the Lucas interview....)

This was actually a pretty revealing interview with Lucas, if you read between the lines.

Lucas describing how Vader finds out Luke is his son from the emperor is pure Special Edition retconnning.  He references the new dialog by Ian McDiarmid where the emperor explains to Vader about Luke.  In the non SE version, the emperor simply states that their new enemy is Luke, and Vader very quickly responds "hes just a boy" meaning, hes known about Luke and who he is pre-empire.

I guess I was surprised that Lucas would reference the new scene as if it had been there since 1980.

Lucas' daughter writing for the Clone Wars shows who will be keeping the franchise going when hes gone.  Sadly, the daughter is writing an episode about Darth Maul having a brother, which even I as a prequels fan think is rubbish.

Lucas' statement about being "out of work" in the late 80s-90s is interesting.  Any interview with Lucas from 83-97 always had the "where are the prequels" question.  Surely he knew if he just made a few more star wars films or had another director do them the money would be coming in.  He did farm out the ewok adventures but he must have had an idea of what everyone really wanted.

Which leads me to the conclusion I've had for awhile.  Lucas dislikes the original trilogy, or tolerates it.  Lucas never got to make the films he wanted to make, he made very compromised versions of them, with Jedi being the least compromised, which is why the prequels all feel like follow ups to Jedi, seriousness with silly kid humor and creatures.  Finally with digital technology he made the prequels which is his real vision of what Star Wars for him is.  Thats why hes involved with the writing for Clone Wars also, he actually cares for it.  He never cared about the post ep. 6 stories because it never interested him creatively or with what he could do with it.

And all this lying about Vader always being Luke's father (guess Lucas didn't hear about the Leigh Bracket script leak), the retconning, the special editions.  Its all to make it shoehorn into the prequels which is what he always wanted Star Wars to be.  Big armies, lots of jedis, yoda with a saber etc.

Even his story that he began with ep. 4 because it was the most interesting is a lie of sorts, since he had to cut down his original treatment to fit budgetary concerns, not creative.  I guess from a business point of view he can't tell the truth about what he feels about the OT, but its definitely there.  And why we will never see beautifully restored non SE versions.  On the prequel dvds, theres always alot of deleted footage, yet none for the OT.  Most likely he considers them so bad, in his own head, that he would never want them out there.  But now he has too, because with BluRay there would be no reason to hold back that stuff now.

Long ranting post here sorry, but it was a good interview I think.

But would you have paid the money for a ticket and waited outside the convention center for up to eight hours just to boo Lucas?

No doubt the audience was biased - you really had to put in the bucks and the effort to get into the theater to begin with. I did it, pretty much just to have the experience of camping out for SOMETHING. But I also have loved Star Wars since I was a kid in the 80s, and I was still thrilled to be there, even though I would really like to see the original films released in their original form.

The promise of deleted scenes from the original trilogy was a nice surprise, though.

Watched through this on youtube, and it was filled with the general promoting etc. Hoped for more real questions being answered but not at all surprised.

Check out Mark Hamill's panel-it's much more entertaining and fun.

Thanks for the video of Hamill. That was great. I fucking love that he doesn't know the names of planets and the jawa-mobile. Why would he?

If it wasn't part of his dialogue, most stuff wasn't even named in the scripts, why would he even know it then, let alone now. It's very impressive that he still remembers his dialogue so well after 30 odd years.

He knows Tatooine because he had to repeat Tatooine on a bunch of different takes.

I like that he asked the crowd what's the name of the thing he attaches himself to the big walker in ESB like there is a toy made of it, yeah Mark it's called a harpoon. Not everything in the SW universe has a name and a storied background. *internet whispers in my ear* Wait what....!

I watched the Lucas thing same bs about the story of Darth Vader tragedy and redemption being the first screenplay he wrote, and the crap that Vader was the father. More stupid stuff about adding cgi to meet his vision when none of those scenes were in the final shooting script, except the Jabba scene and that was cut for good reason.  Tells the same info as the Greedo scene and is redundant.

There is plenty of information from old interviews to refute Lucas having it all written from the get go.

The part where he jokingly says he made it up as he went, is the actual truth.

I love it too.  It really shows that he has had a full life outside of Star Wars and does not take it all too seriously.  I like Mark Hamill.  He always comes across as a really nice laidback guy.

It still blows my mind that he is the Joker. (unbelievably good at it too)

Mask of the Phantasm 2 anyone?

"jawa-mobile" I love it!

Hasbro should introduce the "what it was called on the set" Star Wars toy lineup.
