You're right, Nerfherder -- it's time to move on. As a 36-year-old, I've enjoyed watching the OOT dozens of times and I'll just remember those times and movies as they were.

We didnt see it coming since it was taking time to hear something from Lucas about the blu-rays. I was really expecting the OOT to be released in HD.

Now, all hope is gone and money will be saved.

^I'm glad you took it the way I was intending or it to be taken, meaning, um...not as an insult or anything. Heh. ;) And I totally understand your stance, which is shared by so many here. I mean, that's why this forum exists!

It would be nice if the new deleted stuff could be incorporated as extended OOT versions of the movies, separate from the theatrical versions, maybe using dark_jedi's GOUT clean-ups or something like that. I know it would really depend on the condition of the clips.

Haha don't worry I didn't take it as an insult at all :)

I just heard some people yelling out "we love you George" and at every word spoken there seemed to be a "hell yeah!!!" or something. Was like watching footage of some evangelical religious TV program :s

I'd LOVE to see that clip put back into Jedi - it gives me Star Wars goose bumps! Love the idea that Luke starts out this film in an ambiguous light too - fantastic! A few more scenes like that would help balance out the cute-ness of the Ewok scenes later on.

I get frustrated because this could so easily be THE release of the decade you know? All versions of the film, plus scenes like this which could be seamlessly branched into an ultimate version of each film. It would be amazing to see!

Hahaha! To be fair the flannelled one gave me several of my favourite films of all time; Star Wars, Graffeti and THX. I used to love the things he came out with in old interviews too such as "a special effect without a story is a very boring thing" and other gems like that. I think that's why I'm so frustrated with him these days - instead of running Star Wars into the ground with endless tinkering, release the originals, give Star Wars to people that care (in terms of new films or TV series) and get on and make some more ground breaking experimental films! Move on! In terms of film studios and their ways which he used to loath and did his best to divorce himself from by setting up Lucasfilm, he's - in recent years - almost become what he used to hate...

I just hope - for those that actually don't mind the Special Editions - that Lucasfilm actually address the terrible colour timing which was prevalent on the 2004 DVDs, so they actually resemble the look of real film once again and not some computer game. Ditto for the pink lightsabers that even people I know who watch the films casually have commented upon. Will be interesting to see if they correct the reversed surround channels problem too - that will definately be a case of "yes we DID make a mistake, but are quietly correcting it". If none of this happens I think all thoughts of Lucasfilm caring about their product will be a thing of the past.

Would it kill them to throw us a bone and include some kind of cool option to just watch the movie so it branches off to the original death star battle? Or to the old ending to Jedi?  Hell, my 5 dollar disc of Buckaroo Banzai has the option to watch it with a different opening. But it would probably take up valuable disc space reserved for a Wii game promo.

When these people cheered that the originals versions would not be included it reminded me of that scene from Revenge of the Sith. "so this is how democracy dies.  To thunderous applause."

Well unfortunately film making/releasing is not a democracy as either the director or the studio (depending on circumstances) have the final say in what's released. Disappointing really as we're the one's who indirectly actually fund all films when you get down to it. In this case many of us are getting the smelly end of the sabre!

Unfortunately we're in the minority when it comes to wanting the originals, and I'm sure many SE haters will buy this just because of the extras, which is kind of annoying too. The set will be a success, and people will be creaming themselves about how sharp it all looks, exactly the way they did about the 2004 DVDs. A few years later the same people or reviewers will then moan that the originals aren't available...

However, as I said above, it IS just a film. No point in getting bent out of shape over it any longer. I think we've all tried our best, but we're up against a very stubborn man - it IS his baby at the end of the day (at least technically). I'm sure we will get it in the end though, when he needs to milk the release one more time.

The ONLY way for us to make our point really IS not to buy this, no matter how tempting the extras are. I'm sure many on this board will secretly buy it regardless. George is doing this to make money, and if he makes less and knows the reason why, perhaps he'll get the originals out that much quicker.

Did people actually do that!? If so, I don't know what to say...?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

They seem to be cheering at everything in that clip hahaha! To say they're cheering because we're not getting the originals seems a tad paranoid to me (sorry).

The deleted scene looks cool.  I just hope they don't re-release the 2004 SE's, if they aren't going to release the OOT on Blu Ray, then at least update the SE's.

(Basically like Adywan is doing lol)

All I know is that I am saving up for a blu-ray burner, because I anticipate some good de-specialization/preservation projects to come out.

Good thinking!

I'm kind of hoping that there might at least be a documentary on the extras which contains comparisons of the old and new FX sequences, all in HD so we could get some of what we want that way. Probably a fool's hope, but you never know...

It would be something if they at least got the colour correct this time around! That's hugely responsible for much of the 'feel' of these films.

Unless GL dies and someone (not Rick McCallum) steps in to take over with a clear head and actually listens to the long-time fans, nothing will change.

------------

I understand the disappointment, but I don't know how everyone didn't see this coming.

But the theatrical version of Star Wars will be released one day - it's inevitable. It could take another 20 years, but it will happen.

Look at the efforts taken to restore the original cut of Metropolis. Star Wars, ESB, and ROTJ will get this level of respect and care one day. I just hope I'm around to see it.

I agree with both of these posts. While I'm disheartened, I'm certainly not surprised that Lucas is putting the 1997/2004 editions on blu-ray. The original films will never be properly restored and released (ala Blade Runner or The Godfather) as long as Lucas is in charge. Ever. However, I agree with the previous posters that we will see them one day. And yeah, I hope I'm around to see it, too. Who knows what the movie-viewing formats will be then.

I think the #1 thing that bothers me about this is that kids will be growing up watching these altered versions. However, I think the essence of the films will stay the same... even if Boba's voice is changed and Hayden's inserted in ROTJ in a half-assed way. I hope kids will still be able to see that these were some pretty decent movies... at least, I hope so. lol.

"Blu-ray is the absolute best way to experience Star Wars at home – in pristine high definition," said George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars Saga. "The films have never looked or sounded better."

Sorry guy for posting that, it's like kicking you while you're down, but this is getting comical now - at least to me.

Yeah sure the special special editions have probably never looked so good...

This also made me laugh, it's like Mark's responding to the backlash regarding the Blu-ray announcement. A new meme might be in the making.

And I hate to get personal but this is an observation I just had to share - they're some dainty feet ol' George has. I guess there's a reason he's so into sports cars.

edit: And while people are correct in saying that yeah we'll get a proper restoration eventually I assume when it comes to restorations sooner is preferable to later. Godfather was pretty far gone from memory and it's lucky they did the restoration when they did if they wanted to use as many original elements as they did.

It would be nice if Gil Taylor and a whole bunch of the original guys are still around to advise on the project. Probably not going to happen but it would be nice.

It's morbid, but true. If GL doesn't release the OUT during his lifetime, the chances will probably greatly increase after he dies.

An interesting comparison can be drawn with Michael Jackson and his concerts. Despite their (for lack of a better phrase) SHEER AWESOMENESS, MJ never released any of his concerts on VHS or DVD. He was a perfectionist, and felt that the full experience of his concerts can only truly be felt if you are there in the stadium live.

Fast forward to October 2009, 4 months after his death. Sony Pictures puts out "This is It" a documentary made by splicing various REHEARSAL footage for MJ's "This is it" Concerts. MJ, judging from the past, wouldn't have even put the final, complete concert on DVD or Blu Ray. Yet, Sony releases the incomplete rehearsal footage. The perfectionist would have NEVER stood for it, but he was dead, and money is money.

tl;dr, we will get these movies on Blu Ray. It may not be soon, but it will happen. Now we play, the waiting game.

...

Ah the waiting game sucks, let's play Hungry Hungry Hippos!
