Dark_Jedi & ABC's - ESB: IMPERIAL EDITION - ART OF SCORING, Restored Recordings against the B&W GOUT - JW & LSO (Released)

Author

 (Edited)

From:

D_J’s SW Trylogy Project (Gout Sourced) + ABC’s ESB “Audiophile Edition” (upgraded version)

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK "IMPERIAL EDITION"

John WILLIAMS And The LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Project:

A DVD featuring the Complete Original Score as written by John Williams, playing over D_J’s GOUT sourced version.

Particularities: Using the final upgrade from my last effort for the Empire Strikes Back Audiophile Edition, we agreed with Dark Jedi to save all the space from the DVD for the music and its now more than partially recovered sound quality. We then opted for a black and white version, and obviously silent.

SAMPLE VOB file (16 min opening, W.I.P. and 1st draft)

Final Versions:

Here is a sample of “Asteroids”

Here is a sample of “Mynock Cave”

Note: there’s no tracked parts from other cues like they did for the film in this reconstruction. All has been done to bring back the original score as far as possible. Film versions cuts have only been made when there was no other choice for synchronization with the picture. Every single bit has its place and nothing has been left to hasard. Film version cues mostly consist in tiny bits of music deleted or repeated to match even more with the acting.

- The single titles next to the sessions tape references are from John Williams Original cue sheet (credit to J. Takis for sharing this documentation) -

No problem ABC, I am not one of those guys that cry when his thread goes off topic, it really does not bother me at all.

LOL now I have 3 projects going and not 1 of them done.

Hopefully the '97 Special Edition Trilogy will be done real soon though, but still waiting on material for the v3 GOUT project, so this will be fun.

There's no hurry... My new material is almost completed but I'm still working on a couple of alternate edits and try some improvements.

Let's take our time ;)

It's an interesting and original concept, the sample look kinda cool in black & white, I'm not a big fan of isolated scores on DVD but if you're planning to have the score as originally written for the film, I'm all for it.

ABC, I can check that for you, I've never heard that the rare version should be on the '04 DVD menu, if that's the case it's really cool.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

I'm not a fan of isolated scores neither. We're going to have as you say: the score as originally written as far as possible. Besides that's what shows D_J's sample, and it is the first time I witness the original score against the picture. :) Not mentionning it's going to be a high bitrate sound. I think I'm going to be excited about it soon. lol !

The isolated film cut soundtrack will surely be made though, cause I now know every note and can spot every variation very easily. 'shouldn't be too hard to edit.

Great, thanks. I'm almost sure it is, and if I'm right it's possibly long enough for reediting.

D_J, is your GOUT the same as the 2004 DVD cut ? ... I may have to check some passages against the picture to see if they fit alright.

No the 2004 is the SE, the GOUT is very different, unless you are talking about the bonus disk non anamorphic version that came with it, that would be the GOUT.

Of course I do... hoping I can find where I've put it. Is your version the LD preservation ? (Sorry I haven't followed your thread that far... Don't even know what GOUT stands for).

Author

no it is that exact version just touched up using g-force's script and made anamorphic.

I'm sorry, ABC. I don't have the '04 disc available at the moment, my brother has borrowed it, so you'll have to get someone else to check it for you, if you cannot wait.

Brothers... ahhh... Always taking our best stuff away ! I'll have to shake my home to find it...

D_J, I don't think if I'm going to make the film cut version in the end. For exemple, the insert (SE bit) from Ice planet is cut and has a repeated bit in that version, when Ady's reconstruction features the entire bit, even more complete than on the soundtrack. I guess the end of Yoda and the Force for other instance, is cut with a "March" bit, when here again Ady's reconstruction have the original score ending...

In the other hand, restoring the the unused score over the film mix would be great as far as I witness now... wow!...

This work will be a little more difficult than I thought. But it will also be more interesting than I thought. It's worth working on the synchronization a little further than just pasting my tracks as they are.

I was thinking... What about the idea of leaving the subtitles, if thereare ones of course ?

Author

"Alien" ? Does it stand for "foreign" ?... I was thinking about English sub anyway.

Author
Time

OH, well I won't be adding those, last time I tried they were red and crappy looking.

I'm only afraid the silent parts will be kind of annoying...

Perhaps we'd get a revealing vision if we removed all the unscored parts, like clips fading to black between each others. I don't know. I'm just proposing, it's your choice anyway. ;)

... What about ?

The music usually stops around dialogue right, why not just have the dialogue come back in until music starts again.

I thought about it too. I'm gonna try this, without strong conviction ;)

BATTLETOADS . PAUSE . MUSIC .

I feel like bringing the dialogue or whatever back in during the silent passages defeats the purpose of having an isolated score.

Having English subtitles (as an option?) wouldn't be a bad idea - I usually turn them on when I listen to isolated scores anyway.
