There's file size and SFV from the disc Belbucus sent me.
Will listen for the glitch when I get home....

I got a set from ChainsawAsh and I downloaded the GOUT audio alternatives from the newsgroups and all versions I got have this error, but it doesn't matter now, I already have it fixed, and as I said above, no more having to add delay either, straight up PCM already sync'd to the GOUT.

Perhaps a nice way to present the upgraded AE: "The Imperial Edition" gathering both the DVD and the CDs set. What best than a black and white version for this ! ;)

PS: "Ultimate Sith Edition" as you proposed sounds too commercial to me, like the prequels are.

There is also another error in the '93 PCM for Empire.  It comes right at the beginning of the carbon freeze scene--there is a weird jump cut in the music just before C-3PO says, "If only you'd attached my legs, I wouldn't be in this ridiculous position."  The music cue starts and then it seems to start again less than half a second later.  It is distracting and weird once noticed.

Neither the GOUT nor my Faces vhs tape have this error--it must have been spotted and fixed by someone at LFL in '95 (which lends credence to my theory that the GOUT Empire's audio came from a vhs master, hence its dynamic compression).  I don't know whether the Faces laserdisc also has this fix or if it is carried over from the DC, but it's worth checking.

I was kidding, The Force Unleashed Ultimate Sith Edition was a video game just released not to long ago, so you are right, way to commercial LOL.

It's great that you got it fixed
...but I still wanted to hear the error just to satisfy my curiosity.
Funny thing is I can't seem to find it.
I did hear a high-pitch sound after "Shields up" but thought it sounded like Ben Burtt sound effect.
Wish I knew exactly what to listen for, or exactly when.
Can anybody pin it down to a mm:ss.ff type timecode or range?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Without pitching in on the whole GOUT audio conference going on here, I am just going to say this:

dark_jedi: I can't wait to get your GOUT v3 in my DVD player (PS3 actually, but who cares), and applaud your efforts! You...are...amazing! To me, you're right up there next to Adywan. Lucas? George Lucas? Somewhere at the bottom :p

Will you be releasing the entire GOUT v3 collection at once? Or did you already drop ANH online? As I understand it, you're still putting finishing touches on ESB as well...?

btw, TMBTM released B&W versions of the entire OT, although I don't think the music was synchronized the way you guys are talking about (also don't think he used the GOUT).

Interesting find about the glitch in the Empire PCM, have to check mine and d_j I'm definitely interested to have the different audiotracks uncompressed.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sorry to say it is on the "Faces" and "DC" LD sets, I just checked.

Sorry to say it is on the "Faces" and "DC" LD sets, I just checked.

Blast.  Ah well, for the 5.1 I'll just paste in a tiny section of the gout to cover it up, should be pretty unnoticeable.

It's interesting how the laserdisc versions have that jump cut in the music but the gout and the Faces vhs tape do not.  I guess somebody in LFL's home video department noticed and corrected it, but only for vhs; the gout version must have used the vhs audio master since it was more recent.  This conveniently explains why the ESB gout mix is dynamically compressed compared to the laserdisc, since vhs has a range of something like 80 db compared to 96 db for 16-bit pcm.

I did hear a high-pitch sound after "Shields up" but thought it sounded like Ben Burtt sound effect.

That's the noise I'm talking about, but it's definitely not a sound effect, it's a glitch of some kind.  At first I thought it was caused by my computer crapping out while copying the file, but since dark_jedi's copy was also that way, it must have been introduced elsewhere; maybe an upload error or who knows what.  The replacement d_j sent me from his Faces laserdisc doesn't have this high-pitched sound, neither does the GOUT or my vhs, nor the 1980 mix or any of the SE's, so I can say for sure it's not an effect of any kind.  But I would have pegged it as a glitch just based on the timbre of it alone.

So, we have two glitches in the 1993 mix; one an error in mixing, later corrected by LFL for some later releases (similar to the 'incredible shrinking aspect ratio' but less noticeable), and the other inadvertently introduced in the fan preservation.  Both will be corrected in my 5.1 version, which is very nearly complete; all that's left is to add the fixes, verify that I've set the LFE levels properly, and send it off to be upmixed.

I have both corrected as well, and I also used a very tiny piece of the GOUT audio to fix this.

Great to hear that it's corrected.

I hope not, considering I was the uploader back in '06 :)
Actually I have received that file twice on discs Belbucus sent me. First in Fall '06 then again in Summer '07 when mono restoration was finished. The two discs are different brands with different dye recipes. It's the same file on both discs: same timestamp and same CRC, which I've quoted above.
(And the file posted to usenet ~400 days ago has the same CRC as well.)
So I'm quite confident saying it left Belbucus' studio that way.
Belbucus is a pro, and a human pro at that.

Now this reminds me ... there exist two distinct versions of the ANH file "DC48 DVD.wav" which have different CRC.
I shall pinpoint where the difference(s) occur so we can all have a closer listen....

so I am going over the '93 PCM tracks.

Might want to look/listen extra close at the spots I've listed below.

Belbucus sent out two distinct versions of '93 ANH "DC48 DVD.wav"
Here they are:

DC48 DVD.wav DD2C9343

As you can see they're about a month apart.

Here's the spots where they differ:
0:28:14.971
0:30:42.752
0:40:12.188
0:40:39.558
0:50:25.887
0:50:26.912
0:50:31.533
1:28:17.739
1:42:23.807

And here is a picture of the first difference

Full size

Again, dark_jedi might want to pay extra careful attention to those spots in '93 ANH

you say 2 versions for ANH? well do both have issues or just the one? and if the one version is without issues can you upload that version?

Damn this project and the '97 SE are turning out to be a royal pain in the ass! can't wait to finish these and be done with DVD versions for good.

It looks like Audacity. Perhaps a chance for me to have an answer to this question:

I compared once with the EAC (Exact Audio Copy) tool "Compare Wav" one one of my tracks I imported and exported with Audacity without any processing. The result of the comparison said: "different samples". So I conclude Audacity resamples the audio no matter what.

Then: do you know what's happening, and can it be called a corruption ?

...

PS to D_J:

I'll download the audio mix you will choose to re-edit the music, no matter if I make a new topic or not for the moment. The complete score editing will be a piece of cake. I'm finally interested also to re-edit the film cut version for an accurrate isolated score (though I won't care in the resulting DVD for this one).

For what is to send it back to you, it will make a too huge upload for me, then we would go for the physical option. ;)

Btw, I'm currently searching a rip of the Imperial March from the SE menu DVD - if it's as I remember the alt one with big symbal crashes... If any of you can make it ;)

I am thrilled to work with you on this project ABC, just tell me what you need and I will upload it for you ASAP.

in the meantime, here is a sample of ESB in B&W with one of ABC's tracks, it is not perfect but it gives an idea of what I would like to do with a complete score.
(it is ESB GOUT 16:9 widescreen and ABC's raw PCM file for audio)

... No more than a mp3 version of one of you ESB mix, after all (considering such conversion doesn't affect the synch).

LOL tell me how I convert the lossless PCM file to mp3? I do not mess with mp3's LOL I don't even have an mp3 player.

Haha ! Me neither ! I guess foobar 2000 or Db poweramp can convert this file. Besides, when you say PCM, is it wav. or something else ? (I hear wav when I read PCM).

But if it's more simple to upload the lossless file, go for it.

I just watched your sample and it's great. The lack of precision for synchronization may come from the beginning of Ice Planet wich should be merged to the Main Title a little more, as I observed on the Alt version from the film. I have to say I'd wish the image could be more neat for a B&W, version... I mean a "restored" version with the beatiful fine contrasts as on Ady's reconstruction... Do you have such a thing ? (I know, perhaps should I check the OP now...)

I do not mess with mp3's LOL I don't even have an mp3 player.

No, but you have a ringtone...

I used the GOUT v3 ESB video, I could use the 2004 DVD's instead, that would look much better, but then we will be sync'ing to the SE and not Theatrical, which to me makes no difference, I would use the better video, I am NOT a Theatrical only guy, I like ALL versions.

Let me know what version you want to use, because obviously I will have to get you audio that is in sync to that version.

Audacity yes.
But the file is on DVD-ROM drive where Audacity cannot change it.
In the past I have used EAC's compare function. It is a useful tool but only 44.1kHz, not 48kHz.
In this case I've used a UN*X-style 'cmp' to compare the files and locate the differences (the equivalent to FC.EXE on a DOS command line.)
A very dumb program, not capable of parsing WAV files, it only tells which bytes are different.
Then I do the maths to convert byte offset into time code.
Audacity was used only for making the picture, nothing else.

Looks like the file ~400 days on a.b.starwars is the older version (2006-09-23)
so I will post the 'new' one (2006-10-28) tomorrow...

DM, Does it mean Audacity makes changes (or even sucks) then ?

D_J. I would hate to have to fit with the SE cuts to reedit the isolated score... Is your SE "de-SEed"? From this point of view, the more "authentic", the best. I had in the idea we could ask Adywan about his reconstruction but I'd totally understand it may be upseting to you as far as it would not involve your own material... In that case, just forget these lines.
