The Holiday Special "first edition"?

I do have that travesty on DVD-R, in very good quality, but I've read somewhere that someone had a website that was selling a "first edition" of this, a version not recorded off TV but taken from the original tapes used by the station, which therefore didn't have any artifacts/humming "added" by a recorder, the age of a VHS tape and so on... unfortunately, I can't recall where it was, how much the seller was asking, whether or not he shipped internationally, etc... does anyone know where this site/seller can be found, perhaps?

I just wonder why this... "thing" wasn't released officially on VHS or DVD yet (has it?). I haven't seen it, never will, and I know it's BAD, but... I don't know, I belive people would buy it out of curiosity. A very morbid, twisted, sick curiosity. I mean, Leia singing the lyrics for star wars theme song, chewbaccas familly celebrating Life Day... And Bobba's first appearence...

BTW, did the producers of this tv show create bobba fett? I mean, this was made in 1978 right?

That was Fett's first appearance in anything SW related and his figure launch as a mail in special was because of his introduction in the Holiday Special. However, I wouldn't say that they "created" him. Lucas probably told them to include this guy that his staff conceived complete with tech specs. Much like how GL told Tartakofsky (sp?) that they needed to include his character Asajj Ventress in the animated Clone Wars series. The CL creators did not create Asajj, they just introduced her.

But they had Bobba Fett all planned by 1978?

Why not? Think about the miles per second that Lucas' mind must need to race to develop some of the ideas that he does. I'm sure the concept of Boba was developed well in advance. Besides, drafts of ESB would have needed to already be written by that point in 1978. He needed to have prinicipal photography done by early to mid 79 to be able to work in the SFX needed for the film. It was a much more time-heavy process back in 1978 especially when you're pioneering these special effects. It wouldn't surprise me if Fett was in his head pre-ANH but he just didn't really have a place for him in the finished product.

Boba Fett was planned out by 1977. He was supposed to be in ANH, but the footage was cut. Remember the 'Irish Jabba'?

The footage was later restored and modified for the SE release.

Starkiller I hope that was a joke because Boba Fett wasn't added till the special edition re-release. That's why he looks at the screen, as a nod to fans.

Hi there!

The ONLY Known copies of the STAR WARS: Holiday Special were all sourced from an Original television studio original broadcast tape. (WGBN TV channel 2 Boston is the station)

Most versions were edited to remove the color bars and station ID that is at the begining of some of the real old VHS's and appear to be 'home-recordings' BUT way back in 1978 a VHS VCR cost around $1000 and a blank VHS tape cost between $20 - $50.

the quality is gonna be poopy NO MATTER what anyone claims - I had a 15 years old VHS of the holiday special that I tried to capture to VCD about 5 years ago.... The VHS tape was so old and nasty that it destroyed my Sony SVHS deck (the tape looked like it melted around the heads).

I do have this on DVDr and I restored the picture as best as I could...

- It was captured from a 15 years old vacuum sealed VHS tape that was bought at a SCIFI con about 12 years ago (the tape came from a SW fanatic here in town - the tape survived and was resealed)

- I did not capture the tape but I do know that a JVC D-VHS w/ S-video out was used with Adobe Premier

- I took the MPEG2 and filtered for blocks, I also did some color/gamma correction and authored the disc with bonus videos

It's not the best quality but you can watch it without snow or pixulation driving you insane!
