never used the mic before, so im a bit nervous about talking to complete strangers! but you said it was good so gotta find out!
I am not all that chatty of a person, so I usually just leave my mic on mute. That way I can still remain part of a group and hear what the plans are and people calling for help. If I get into trouble and my teams seems oblivious, I'll just switch the mute button off, say "Smoker" or "I'm down" or announce whatever mess I am in, then click the mute back on.
Sometimes I will feel more like interacting and will join in on the strategical process, just depends on the mood I am in and the people I am playing with. Sometimes you find some really interesting people who are a lot of fun to talk to. Others will be absolutely determined to have a conversation and in order not to seem rude I will join them for some idle chit chat. It is a pretty mixed bag, which is what makes it so much fun. It is kind of fun being thrown in with total stangers and being forced to work together to survive.
