Beautiful, thanks!
Here's a first quick effort (the AR needs sorting out, but other than that it's hopefully quite close)...

Oh...so the pattern margin is the text :
BRITISH
BOARD
OF FILM
CENSORS
I will have to really scrutinise that pattern margin to identify that typeface through all that gravel.
As for the title type I'm told Georgia wasn't around in 1981 (it was designed in 1993 and released for general use in 1996), it looks likes an Ionic display version of Clarendon family, I'll let you know more when I've had a better chance to look at it (might be Century Schoolbook, Belizio Regular is quite close too).
Thanks for posting that, I one step closer to my goal of replicating what I saw in 1977.
Really nice stab Jonno it's closest thing yet but of all my crimes of pedantry type is one of my worse vices.
It would be interesting to see if ANH got a a new card for for the re-release when it first got it's episode number and subtitle, I can't remember if ESB got the episode number mentioned on it's card.
I'd be the last person to cricitise anyone for pedantry ;-)
Do let us know what you find out about the typeface. When we hammer together a definitive set of cards, I'm thinking of running them through Magic Bullet (or similar) to produce the appropriate level of grain and wobble.
Another pedantic question: are the cards meant to be on screen for a specific length of time?
Proof if proof be need be that yellow is the way to go (at least for a 1980 British print). I'm not sure how that would have effect the spacing on a 1977 recreation :
Fantastic find! Correct timing reference and everything...
I'll come back with my recreation once I've found a suitable film effect plug-in, which is harder than it sounds (most are more concerned with colour balance, and those that do apply grain/scratches/gate weave are too cartoonish to be useful).
I have a DVD of the original Pearl & Dean trailers if you're still after them Jonno. Please PM me...
