Is there any interest in starting a large-scale collaborative project to splice game footage and cutscenes into watchable films, the way several of the Star Wars games have been? I was thinking, just off the bat, off trying to do this with Batman Vengeance and Batman Rise of Sin Tzu, as well as some other Star Wars games. Is there any interest in this? And how would a person go about doing it?

Currently looking for the following preservations: V8 A Final Attempt by Arnie.D, Pre-ANH Bootleg Telecine, Starkiller '77 bootleg, LD OT by Cowclops, LD OT by Dr. Gonzo, LD OT by Farsight, LD OT by ISOMIX, LD OT by Dark/Sega Take 1, TPM Theatrical by Adywan, OT - Deliberate Creative, OCPMovie's Classic Editions, Pan & Scan O-OT Project, LD OT by EditDroid, Lucasfilm Pwnage Editions, Negative1 CED Preservations, Starkiller CED Preservation, Rowman bonus discs, BLAK0004, BLAK0009, BLAK0010, BLAK0016, BLAK0017, BLAK0029, BLAK0040, BLAK0046, BLAK0047-0050. I'd love to see this for any/all Metal Gear game(s).  Or Mass Effect (though that'd be a bitch).

It would be fun to try and do this with the Raccoon County Resident Evil games (using the REmake as the elements for RE1).

The films are such a wasted opportunity as so much of the games were inspired by tropes from films and they are so well designed that the films should have made themselves.

The games overlap in terms of timelines so it would be fun to have them stitched into a chronological CG storyboard of how the films could have played out.

Mixing in bits from the Umbrella Chronicles and Outbreak games would also flesh out the potential footage.

Some of the few bits of footage from the films that does match the in-game universe could also be used.

Unfortunately, I have become extremely busy. I don't even have much time to watch fanedits anymore, let alone work on them. I'm way excited for anybody who feels like they can do it to work on their own efforts in this project, and I'm happy to use this thread as a clearinghouse of ideas, maybe even edit the original post to show a list of games and who's working on what. Hopefully at some point in the future I'll be able to rejoin the fanediting effort in earnest, as I have several projects in various states of completion, and would like to get started on some VG edits as well. However, in the meantime, I'm very excited to see what you all come up with!

I have said this before but, Mass Effect 1&2(as ChainsawAsh has said) and the God Of War series would be cool.

Oh yeah, God of War as a movie would be pretty badass!  Good call there.

How in the heck do you capture these? I have been playing ME 1&2 and God of War III a lot lately and have beaten all.

Daveytod has done a few video-game movie edits. I liked his The Force Unleashed edit, and his entry at Fanedit.org on the cut explains the methodology in skeletal detail: Nintendo Wii -> DVD Recorder -> Womble Video Wizard -> DVD Lab Pro.

Looks like he hasn't been to OT in about a month and a half, but I'm sure he'd have some helpful advice on the subject of turning a game into a film, as well as editing tips and pacing advice.

Looking forward to whatever you put out. As I mentioned before, I think I'll be editing the first post with a list of who's tackling what games. Should I sign you up?

Where can I find The Force Unleashed edit? this would be cool to watch with my little boy right before The Force Unleashed II comes out, although I think I would have captured the version from either the Xbox 360 or PS3, way better graphics.

If I had a DVD recorder I would try and make one for God OF War III first, I FRIGGIN love that game! Kratos rox!

Would I be violating the rules to post a link? It's been awhile and I can't remember what's kosher. I'll check the rules and get back to you.

You know how out of touch I am right now? I didn't even know they were making a sequel to TFU.

OK, checked the rules, so I think I'm within them if I say you can find the TFU cut at Fanedit.info.

There's a crazy machinima some guy made where he took gameplay from Modern Warfare 2 and somehow managed to make it look like it was being shot through a handheld camera, and it looks like it's a movie even though technically it's just a really fancy spectator mode for the single player campaign. Something like this could work very well for bridging the cutscenes in a video game movie edit as "action scenes," however I am not sure whether or not the amount of work that would be involved with making high-quality machinimas like this would be something a fan editor would be willing to put up with, since I imagine a fair bit of mod savvy is involved.

The Wii is not HD, I wonder how the DVD recorder would record the video from a PS3? for a God Of War 1, 2 and 3 project.

what is the best recorder out there?

Couldn't you just hook it up to a capture card, the same as capturing a laserdisc?

I've long considered doing Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.  It's pretty damn cinematic to start with.
