ADY, I now see what a dark path you have gone down. So addictive! :-)

I think this idea has potential.  Would it just be more practical just to have Luke use the force to just push the button itself?

While we are on the subject, is the scene with Luke saving himself from the Rancor (possibly with the force) too similiar to Luke saving himself from the Wampa with the force?

Call me crazy, but I always thought it would be cool to maybe add an underconstruction Death Star II somewhere in ESB, near the end, so it's even more of a cliff hanger.... Kinda like the ending scene of RotS, with Vader and Palpatine watching the Death Star I being built on a Star Destroyer.... I'm guessing you guys will hate the idea though :P

I don´t think it´s crazy... :) Stuff like this can be very good or very awful pretty much based on how it´s delivered, I think I would never give the Special Edition too much thought if it was not for some scenes that had only a few seconds or even frames on screen but are enough to make us cringe in horror...

On your idea, I once imagined a scene like that but at the end of ANH, it was prompted by some discussion here on the forums which I think involved the reaction of the Emperor to the destruction of the first Death Star.

I was actually inspired by a post-credits cutscene of Rebel Assault II, this scene would enter just before the Throne Room ceremony and would show Vader, still on his fighter, reporting the Death Star destruction to the Emperor who would dismiss that as a "little setback". Then, after a short external view of the Imperial Palace on Coruscant, we´d see the Emperor contacting Jerjerrod and informing him about Tarkin´s demise and how he expected Jerjerrod to do better. Finally, cut to Jerjerrod as the Emperor ends his transmission and he walks towards a star destroyer window, in the distance we see Endor and the second Death Star in very early stages of construction... :)

Wouldn't the Emperor have felt the demise of the Death Star?

^^ Yeah he probably would have felt it. In that case Vader could just be seen reporting directly back to the Emperor (which he probably would have done in such an extreme scenario) who could allude to the fact that "he is already aware of the setback".

I always pictured such a scene as ending with Vader leaving Palpatine at some point and then hearing that the person who destroyed the DS was Luke Skywalker. Thus we'd get to see that pivotal moment onscreen leading to the events of ESB where he already knows of Luke. As it stands we are left to assume that between movies but it plays so nonchalantly that it seems a bit off in hindsight.

But realistically I don't know how well that would all jive with the Emperor/Vader scene in ESB. How could Vader get such important news so early but Palpatine apparently learns much later on?

Knowing Star Wars fans, I'm guessing this has already been dicussed and you guys are probably sick of it, but here an idea for Boba Fett's death (Yep, I know this has been discussed a lot, but I'm too lazy to read all the pages of this thread :P)

I was thinking, maybe Luke should decapitate him, like Jango was... You can probably edit the scene when Boba lands onto the skiff, but instead of Luke's saber cutting his gun, you change it so the blade just about hits Boba's head, then you cut to a scene of his head rolling onto the ground (You can edit the scene of Jango's head rolling onto the ground), just an idea and now he's definitely dead (Unless he can regrow a head, which fans will probably say he can :P)

If you are wary of reading the entire thread most of the points already raised are on doubleofive's list linked to my signature and having Luke decapitate Boba is already on there so it's an idea with some support.

I think it would be better to have the UNignited saber fly into his hand while coming down the stairs.

I've always assumed that was already the case. Walks down the stairs, as we can't see his hand he calls it and immediately ignites it.

That would be cool to see.  I read (from the annotated screen play book) that in the rough draft of Empire, Chewie and one of those Wampa's were going one-on-one with each other.  How cool would that be?

Has anyone thought of adding flashing lights to the ships?

i.e. similar to the flashing lights you find all over airplanes?

I could see this being done to the Mon Calamari ships; it could provide an interesting effect.

Also, more traffic around the Death Star II (star destroyers, tie fighters) in the establishing shots; just like what Adywan did to the Death Star establishing shot.  The sequence doesn't have to be any more complicated than it actually is, but I'd like to see more things moving.

The Death Star II should also really look more like it's under construction (i.e. flashing lights from welders, moving dots around the thing that are actually space construction vehicles...); the DSII construction should be something more like the construction of the Enterprise in 2009's Star Trek.

The moon should give a more alien-like feeling, reminiscent of Pandora in the movie Avatar (but it shouldn't be as intense like in Avatar to give contrast between the two movies).  Even something like this would work pretty well:

Or this:

53. Start a forest fire in the background. (Bingowings)

I kinda like this idea but it would only work if there were someone or something to put out the fire (i.e. rebel airships spraying water on the fires)

Also, I feel any modifications to the story (i.e. the ones about Executor crashing into the DS) would just change the story too much and ruin it; ROTJ should be fixed, not completely changed from the way it is.

One more thing.

This is an idea I really quite like :D

It's arguable that the story or lack of story and the lack of character development  is one of the problems that needs fixing.

Having The Executor dive bomb the Death Star doesn't actually change the events of the story much but it does add new value to that image and the character in charge of the ship.

It's almost certainly not the only way to do that but it's one method.

Here's how I see the whole Executor dive-bombing the Death Star thing would have to work.  I think this could all be done using available footage, and a HELL of a lot of new effects footage.  (It does, however, significantly affect the story of the space battle, but doesn't affect the Luke/Vader/Emperor or Endor sections at all - though I'd love for the Endor section to be significantly changed, as well.)

First, it needs to be made clear that the Rebels really don't have a plan for how to destroy the new Death Star.  They just know that they need to before it's finished, or they're well and truly fucked.  (Demonstrated from the opening shot, which is now of the Executor being completely fucking dwarfed by the DSII, just before Vader's shuttle leaves to enter the Death Star and give Jerjerrod his pep talk.)

Basically, the bit of a plan they have is that they disable the shield on Endor, then pummel the fuck out of it and hope that they can find a way to blow it up.

Unfortunately, they didn't count on it being a trap, and are taken by surprise when the turbolaser starts destroying their fleet.  Now they're completely desperate, and move the fleet as close to the Death Star as possible, to try to avoid the turbolaser.  The Star Destroyers - including the Executor - follow.  The Rebel ships (I mean the big ones, the fighters are busy trying to fend off the TIE fighters) are using their laser batteries to try and hit the Death Star on one side and the Star Destroyers on the other (think Battlestar Galactica-style gun batteries, but with lasers, or like the opening of ROTS for a Star Wars example).  Nothing is making a dent in the Death Star, and the Rebels are down to their last few ships, which are dropping like flies.

Lando has the idea to drive a ship into the Death Star to punch a hole open, and since the Executor is closest (and biggest), he heads for that.  Instead of the A-Wing blowing up the bridge, the Falcon does it (not by crashing).  Or it could disable the shields, then other fighters take it out.  Or something.

So, the Executor tumbles into the Death Star, since it wasn't outright blown up like the rest of the big ships.  Instead of it causing a huge fireball with no damage, it crumbles into the structure, causing a large section to cave in.  Lando uses this to punch through to the core.

Now, what I'd like to see here is Lando trying to destroy the core, failing, then deciding to sacrifice himself (and the Falcon) by diving into the core to destroy the station, but I don't think there's enough footage to sell this sacrifice properly, so I guess that one's out of the question.

I dunno, what do you guys think, could this legitimately be done?  I feel it'd help improve latter part of the film significantly.  As it stands, I just don't care about the space battle, as I never really feel that the rebels are in that much danger or that they're taking any real losses.

I blame it on the stormtroopers!

With a large part of the Death Star II still to build, with large portions exposed, I can´t see why making a ship clash on it to open a hole to fly through, that would be the worst place to find relatively safe route to the core... :)

And Lando sacrificing himself (and the rest of the crew and the Falcon)... If proton torpedoes, concussion missiles or whatever warheads they have couldn´t destroy the power generator, I can´t see kamikazing the Falcon doing any better unless yuo don´t mind deus ex machina solutions... :P

If in ANH the empire wouldnt consider a small fighter as threat then probably in ROTJ they took this fact more seriously. not only heavy lasers but even more smaller could take out small fighters easily. Taking the concept ramming the executor on one part of the station if can make a defense free spot for the fighters to enter.

I've always assumed that was already the case. Walks down the stairs, as we can't see his hand he calls it and immediately ignites it.

You can see the saber's shadow tho. I like the idea of the force returned  saber :D

I just hope the shadow of the stunt blade can be fixed.  My idea was to cast that floor in shadow to hide it, and replace the stunt blade shadow with a faint reddish reflection.

While I'm not against Leia remaining Luke's sister it doesn't really make sense that she is the 'other' spoken of in ESB.

Ben knows she exists, he knows she could be trained but in that scene only Yoda seems to have a clue who the 'other' is.

If possible I'd trim references to Luke saying things like "Yoda spoke of another" and Ben's "The other he spoke of was your twin sister" and replace them with a more general questioning about who this different Skywalker is.

That way Yoda comes across as more powerful because the 'other' he has in mind is Anakin (who does finally return and saves the day).

I hate it in film series when a later episode clearly refers to events in an earlier one as a film reviewer might.

Alien 3 has one of the worst examples of this, "When they first heard about this thing, it was crew expendable. The next time they sent in marines, they were expendable too. ... think they're gonna care about a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space?".

Luke's blatant reference to 'an other' is 'another' example of this (kids remember when Yoda mentioned a mysterious 'other' three years ago and you were really excited about who this new character was going to be? Well read on...).

It doesn't sound like what the character would say in that situation, it sounds more like a writer explaining the plot of his story to someone a bit slow on the up-take.

I haven't a clue how it could be done but at least by mentioning it the idea is out there.

Bingo: I really like the idea of Anakin/Vader being "the other".  Again, I can go one way or the other with Leia being Luke's sister, though it still feels tacked on to try and top the "I am your father" bit from EMPIRE. I personally would still edit out Ben's appearance on Dagobah and end the scene with Luke looking worried with one of the segway music cues kicking in (ala along the lines of when Luke found his aunt and uncle dead) and leave it for Luke to figure out through the Force and reveal what he knows/discovers to the audience as he reveals it to Leia (not to mention, it would be more shocking to find out somewhere near the end of the second act right before everyone is about to meet their fates, than have exposition Ben lay it on the audience before the story really starts to progress).

Why Leia couldn't have "heard" Luke at the end of EMPIRE simply because they have a close bond either as possible lovers (or love interests) or just because of all the stuff they went through beforehand is beyond me.

Granted, Obi Wan would have less "face time", but is it really critical to the story that Obi Wan spells out everything for Luke/The Audience?  Also keep in mind that Ben's appearances dwindle from movie to movie as Luke grows up from a kid to an adult - the main point being that in order for Luke to become a true Jedi, he has to finish his final test/confrontation ALONE without any outside help.  It would also allude to the "rogue's gallery of Jedi ghosts" at the end as all variations of father figures for Luke, as they all had a hand in him growing up not just as a Jedi but as a human being (hence a good reason that they, and not Qui Jon or any other Jedi, appear in ghostly form).  Yoda's and Ben's appearances SHOULD be extremely limited, as JEDI is the movie where Luke has to become an adult in the sense that when 20 and 30 year olds become parents, one of the first things they learn is self-sacrifice (be it money, time, freedom to simply be lazy or have fun).  Granted, Luke does not have any children of his own, but if he is to reboot the Jedi and the Republic, he is essentially taking the mantle of being the "founding father" of the New Republic and has to prove that he won't give in to the same hate and evil his father and Palpatine gave into.  Thus, when we see Anakin (as played by Sebastian Shaw), Obi Wan and Yoda, they are all giving their collective nod of approval at seeing their collective son grow up.
______________________

On another note, isn't one of the main faults of JEDI the lack of urgency or a real threat to the main characters?  Be it when Luke finds his aunt and uncle dead, or Luke is in the Falcon at the end of EMPIRE, both scenes made me feel at least like you had no idea what the character could do to escape the situation - I was genuinely worried.  Other than maybe the Rancor scene, I can't say I really felt that watching JEDI.

______________

From an overall editing point of view, I would still start JEDI out on Tatooine, and leave the introduction of the DS2 when the Emperor arrives (where you could do the SD overshadowed by the Executor, which is then overshadowed by the DS2).  The opening shot with Vader landing is pretty redundant, as we see essentially the same shot when the Emperor arrives, not to mention it "blows the wad" right off the bat by revealing the Death Star to the audience in the first shot.

I would consider changing the opening scrawl to describe the rebels suspect the Emperor has a plan to "destroy the rebellion once and for all", but do not know the details, with the second part of the scroll "with Luke finishing his training, he heads to Tatooine to rescue his long, lost friend..." (or something to that effect).  The bottom line being that there is no mention of the Emperor building yet another Death Star.  That way when we see it (much less if you take the Executor reveal from EMPIRE, but extend it to have the DS2 overshadow it, which leads to the Emperor departing the Executor and to the shuttle bay per the original JEDI scene), it is a definite shock.

That way the DS2 is at least something of a surprise and we see it only after the "B" story is wrapped up.  I would try to eliminate as much exposition and edit around the actual facial acting the actors do (like mentioned before, rather than have Leia comment on Luke revealing to her that she is his sister, keep her quiet and only show her expression so her face and her eyes tell us how she is feeling as opposed to Carrie Fisher literally telling us).

You see, this is why Jedis suck now. You just can't keep your filthy fingers off pushing the force button just because you can. Today, a rock. Tomorrow, kamehameha.

The "sissy" part makes Luke human. And all the more impressive that he could defeat the Rancor. Heck, you see the size of that rock? I know he's gotta be fit and all, but who could throw that even 3 meters? Let alone across a room. Maybe he's already force throwing it.
