Info: OT Backup Thread

Author

 (Edited)

This is the offical thread to discuss one thing and ONE thing only. The backup of the original theatrical editions of the Star Wars trilogy for personal preservation of collections, not for sale or illegal distribution. If that is done by a user, the blame is at their feet.

Now on to the discussion. The first thing I need is an article I remember from here that I have lost the weblink to. Someone here on the site had a link about backing up Star Wars from LD to DVDR and it will be a good starting point to figure out what technology I will need for my LD set to hook up to my computer. Also, any links to backing up VHS or Beta tapes is great.
And, I would consider it on-topic as well if we talk about different images from the the OT for menus, as well as different chapter names and such. (I am leaning toward the chapter names of my Faces LD set, but we shall see.)

You can ask Mike Wong at Stardestroyer.net he made is own DVDs with the OT,i'm not sure if it was the LD or from the VHS tape.

I will be connecting my LD player to my Sony digital cam-corder, which has a video pass-through and can digitize the signal on the fly. After that, I will go back and digitally record the PCM soundtrack through my optical input, which I will then remix into a DD 5.1 signal (better separation and less space.) I may also make a PCM set, if I can squeeze the audio and video onto one 4.7 DVDR.

I will be using the "Faces" set for the audio and video, but I will also make an "extras" disc with the supplements from the Def. Col. set. I am also going to copy the commentary track - I am waiting for DVD-Lab Pro to come out next month, which will allow me to add more than one soundtrack. DVD-Lab Pro will also allow seamless branching, so I might attempt to add the CG Yavin battle to ANH. Chances are there won't be enough room, so I'll have to make two versions....but that's fine by me.

If you have any specific questions, I have dozens of links regarding various technical aspects of this procedure (I've been studying up for quite some time, and my LD player should be fixed by next week. )

Actually, no. You don't have your profile activated for open viewing; I just noticed that you're a frequent poster on the forums @ stardestroyer.net, where it gives a detailed description of your status and location.

Yeah, you don't have your profile available for us to view. You may need to change the default setting.

THE MOST COMMON WAY TO TRANSFER LD OR VHS TO DVD IS TO USE A VIDEO CAMERA AS A BUFFER BETWEEN THE PLAYER AND YOUR COMPUTER. RADIOSHACK HAS A DEVICE CALLED MACROBUSTER THAT WILL REMOVE THE MACROVISION ENCRYPTION. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GO LOW TECH YOU CAN USE AN OLD VIDEO CAMERA THAT USES THE FULL SIZE VIDEO CASSETTES. THEY WON'T READ THE MACROVISION BLOCK THEREFORE NEGATING THE NEED FOR MACROBUSTER.

LD's don't use macrovision. Makes it soooo much easier.

So you are saying any video camera, pretty much? If so, I have a JVC handheld that can work great for that and I won't have to buy any more equipment. Perhaps I may be able to do this sooner after all.

Your VCR will do it as well. Macrovision started with VHS tapes, not LD players.

PRETTY MUCH AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE RIGHT HOOK-UPS FOR YOUR COMPUTER.

You would (generally) need one video and at least one audio (preferably two for stereo). Many videocards only have a VGA out, and some have a tv coaxial out (this is the "antenna screw-on" connector, and you really, really, don't want to use this except in a worse-case scenario.) Try to get a video out with a "video out" cable, that gives you at least the traditional video/audio RCA outs (like the yellow/red/white connectors on the back of your VCR) or, if possible, an "S-video" connector (looks like a PS/2 mouse connector with four pins...of course, your camcorder must be able to accept this as well.)

The ATI All-in-wonder comes immediately to mind, but there are others.

Just to let you guys know, I just bought a Pioneer CLD-D701 LD player for $180. I'm compiling my first DVD tonight (the raw capture files took up 28 gigs!)

I'll let you know how it turned out.
