Well, it's going to be well worth the wait.  I'm sure I"m not the only one who appreciates this!

To answer my own question, the VHS of Saludos Amigos has the same copyright date as the Gold Edition DVD.

So unless someone has the 1995 laserdisc, this is one we're going to have to wait for Disney to fix.

Don't have my laser player anymore (but still have my Star Wars discs for no good reason...)

Anyone want to take this on?

I wouldn't mind capturing the video, but my equipment isn't so great on this machine (and my laserdisc player is pretty decent).  So if somebody wanted to cleanup after I were to capture it that'd be fine by me.

Also, anyone have a clue as to supplements not carried over from Laser to DVD.  I know 20,000 leagues does, maybe we could start up some preservations of those extras as well.

Isn't there a new dvd of Saludos Amigos out now? Maybe that has what you're looking for.

And for some unknown reason, there is a new anniversary edition of Mary Poppins. Does anyone know if that has the aspect ratio proper this time? The dvd lists it again as 1.66:1.

The new Saludos Amigos is pretty much the same as the previous release with upgraded audio and bundled with Three Caballeros.

Wandering the net I found information that suggested someone reconstructed Fantasia's Pastoral scene using footage from an episode of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color combined with the DVD video and audio.

The best I can find is some streaming clips of it.  Has anyone come across this?

Yeah, that particular episode pretty much had the entire scene uncut. (And the Disney Channel allegedly aired it in the 90's oblivious to that fact.) A 16mm print of the show was on Ebay a couple years back, so it's possible someone used that too.

The censored scenes were zoomed in or digitally altered in recent editions, so it wouldn't be too hard to drop the original shots back in.

Where were you in '77?

So getting back to the alternate cut of eps. 1-2 of Darkwing Duck: I got vobbage now.  Some minor vhs borkage but it's mostly all right, dunno how it varies from the DVDs...

I was just shopping for Bedknobs and Broomsticks only to discover that the only cut on DVD is a recently extended one with variable quality footage, and noticeable new overdubs.

Is anyone considering recutting this film back to the original theatrical version, I can't find my old VHS to use as a guide.  I have to rely on someone else to do this.  Any takers?

Here is what UltimateDisney.com had to say about the new cut:

I'm not sure that the restorations do the movie any favor. Oh, it is surely a treat to see songs and footage shot and edited for the film (how many other pre-DVD age Disney flicks have given us any?). But besides introducing picture and sound inconsistencies, the reinserted sequences also appear to wreak havoc on the movie's pacing. "Portobello Road", the fun musical number set in London's incomparable antiques marketplace area, is probably the film's best song. Here, its joys are tempered by minutes and minutes of cultural dances that move the film nowhere and feel quite out of place. The climax, in which Eglantine enchants museum war gear, runs far too long as well. With the couple of tunes that are undeleted, the total song count becomes nine, a lot for viewers with no specific liking for the genre.

The reason that the places in which Bedknobs drags gain notice is because the film is quite sharp and satisfying in most other spots. The visit to Naboombu, which finds Professor Browne officiating an anything-goes soccer match for a lion king, delights. The experiments with witchcraft divert, as do many of the interactions born out of the makeshift family and out of Eglantine and Emelius' eccentric, underplayed romance. The highlights may be easy to appreciate and identify spread out, but the film as a whole would play much better without slow, saggy bits. At the very least, the studio ought to give viewers the choice to experience Bedknobs and Broomsticks as it was in its original theatrical run and the next 25 years. Disney has not. And though it seems illogical to want less than what's given, I feel like Bedknobs would benefit from having scissors taken to it in the right (i.e. wrong) places.

Was there ever that V2 release of Beauty & the Beast?

There wasn't, unfortunately.  I hate having to rely on anyone else because nothing ever gets done. :(

A 16 of Fantasia with the censored scene, eh?  We need someone like Puggo on this xD

Any chance you could just release the raw footage, no menu?  In case you can't tell I love the movie quite a bit.

 (Edited)

I'll upload direct LD rips of Beauty and the Beast, untouched, off my settop, dunno what's the best way to get it out (I'll prolly torrent them from my friend's dedi or something, it's the easiest way to deal with such big files).

I'll warn you guys that this is going to be 8 DVDISOs about 2.5 GB each taken from my settop, unfiltered (4 for the OTV, 4 for the WIP).

If anyone can master these I'll toss in a couple things to sweeten it up (a Walt Disney Classics logo and a better-looking FBI warning).  Everything but the FBI warning will need to be IVTC'd to look good, especially if the footage is upscaled slightly for anamorphic.  The title font on all posters and packaging is a variant of Linotype Times; Times New Roman will probably work as well.

ETA: I'm going to also give it one last shot myself, although the only authoring software I've still got here working is dvdauthor (I can use a front end or something but they're prone to weird behavior).

Just tested my chops on a DVD of the Winnie the Pooh shorts.  This crosses the line into custom territory, and the encode is low bitrate - let me explain.

1. Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree - laserdisc rip (IVTC'd; bumper added)
2. Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day - R1 rip (IVTC'd)
3. Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too - laserdisc rip (IVTC'd; bumper added)
4. Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore - R1 rip (untouched)

I standardized the encode on the format of the fourth short - 3 Mbps/192 kbps, prograssive.  That isn't a lot - the DVD's only a little over half full.  If you want *high quality*, at the cost of integrity of the first three shorts (the fourth is exactly the same as presented here), you'll need to get the Many Adventures DVD.  The first three shorts' quality is nothing to write home about even before re-encoding them, though!  Lots of film noise.

Keep in mind that I'm not good at authoring DVDs.  The background image is taken from the opening titles, and the font is the same one used in the opening titles of Many Adventures (1977) and Day for Eeyore.  I do think I managed to get a Play All option working, though, as well as a Play One option.

What is different on Beauty and The Beast LD?

Author
Time

The most obvious things:

* Aspect ratio is a slightly more open 1.66:1 instead of 1.85:1
* Title card is different (it's larger on the DVD).  "Silver Screen Partners IV" credit is also missing from the DVD.
* The stuttering beast is corrected on the DVD (was present in all versions prior to the IMAX re-edit).

I think there's some effect differences also.

Basically, the "OTV" on the DVD is the IMAX cut, re-edited to resemble the OTV - it's not the OTV.  Neither is the WIP version on the DVD the same as the laserdisc version.

I'm obviously out of touch. When is the stuttering Beast?

When the Beast takes Belle out of the dungeon, after she offers to take her father's place.  OTV: "You want, you want to stay in the tower?" (iirc, I don't have the video readily accessible atm)  It is technically a mixing error but it's the way I grew up with the movie.
