Fantasia Hybrid Edition (* unfinished project *)

With the pleasure of viewing the beautifully remastered Blu Ray edition, it gave me more of an idea of what to do.

If your a purist, I suggest you ignore this thread and stick with your official copy.

I am sticking with the idea of using the Kostal recordings.

The Centaur scene will stayed zoomed, I actually thought it looked less distracting zoomed in on this release. Sorry, I feel something that racially negative isn’t worth the effort in salvaging. Maybe if Disney produced the scene, but I agree with their decision to cut it in the 60’s.

I will cut the film around the original Deems Taylor dialogue. Corey Burton will not be a part of the film. Even if it is closer to the roadshow version. I prefer consistency over historical accuracy.

Essentially this is the 1991 edit and dialogue, with 2010 picture, and 1984 re-recorded soundtrack.

I hope to be able to release it in 1080p, but it will take a while. I am going shoot for a job soon. Give me a break, I’m practically a kid, especially when Frink is in the room.

I won’t be working on it for a while. It seems like I’m scrapping it, but I’m not. This thing would be out right now if my computer could handle it.

Sorry to be frank, but this is how I want it to be. I plan on posting a trailer sometime in the future. It won’t be the finished product, but it will give you an idea of how it will look.

I will also exclude bonus content, and deleted scenes. If you want to watch them, they are on the official release which you should hopefully have if you plan on getting a hold of this release.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I grew up with this film. I remember my dad had a copy he kept on the top shelf (the shelf of movies we couldn't touch). On several occasions, he would get it down, and we were able to enjoy it for all it's magic. All in all, it introduced me to music outside of Mozart. One thing bothered me, the sound. I realized it was old, so I was fine with it, until I did research on it a few years back, and came to the realization that Disney didn't do a good job taking care of this wonderful music.

I then looked everywhere to see if I could find a remastered soundtrack. They all sounded awful. Then by chance, I found a CD released in 1982 that consisted of re-recorded music. I thought, well that is cool, until I found out that it was actually re-recorded to the exact timing of Stokowski's version. I was in awe by it, so I did more research and found that a version of the movie with that sound was released. BUT, it edited out the introductions.

So, this may seem like a travesty to purists, but I am going to work on a Fan Edit of Fantasia using several different versions mixed to the latest release.

The reason I am using different versions is because they re-recorded Deems Taylor's lines with somebody who sounds like a friggin robot on the Latest release.

Corey Burton, iirc.

I wonder if somehow the "lost" Deems Taylor introductions not on the 1991 remaster actually survived, despite Disney not having it.  (The 1991 version, iirc, went back to the original 1941 orchestration.)

I have the 1991 remaster on laserdisc, but it has two problems - the centaur scene is zoomed, and some of the narration is removed.

Yes, it seems that every release of the last 20 years has the centaur zoomed.

I have the 1991 version as well. The audio, aside from the music will be based off of it. The video will be from the 2000, edited to the 1991. The music will be the Irwin Kostal recordings.

I won't be able to fix the centaur scene. I just don't have any source material. Plus it is pretty racist LOL

The missing narration is something that will stay as well. I will do anything in my power to ensure Corey Burton's voice is not on this.

It wouldn't be to much trouble to ask if you wouldn't mind ripping the audio? It is ok if you don't want to, but if you do, stereo is just fine, that's what the edit will be. I need a good quality rip of Deems Taylors lines. My version is way beyond repair.

My DVD drive is on the fritz right now.  As my money is set aside for a necessary relocation I can't buy a replacement until September. :c

As soon as I have a working drive, I'll try to get you the audio.

ETA: A friend suggested I hook my old computer's burner to an external kit, and that seems to work fine.

Are there any segments from Fantasia 2000 that might be worth splicing into the original?  That would really be a hybrid.

Fantasia, Fantasia 2000 and Beauty and The Beast are all coming out on Disney Blu-ray later this year.

Gee, I can't wait to see how they muck up Beauty & the Beast on Blu... :/

Oh, yeah, Fantasia.  I saw 2000 in the original theatrical run (in a temp-theater set up in a tent specifically for the event no less), and may or may not have seen Fantasia when I was very young.  I look forward to checking this out, and wish you luck.

There's a bit of slack, you'll need to cut to fit.

Thanks, It'll do just fine!!!

[EDIT] It sounds great. I won't have to work as hard as I had first thought.

Though I was never a big fan of it, I have to say that it is already in great shape. I am doing this with the original because of how old it is. Fantasia 2000 is high quality and still new.

The edit was made in 1969, so unless it predates that it's probably still censored.

Yeah, that is why I am not really fooling with bringing it back. The only problem I ever had with it, was the fact that it was poorly zoomed in.

I do have a mediocre mp4 version of Patoral uncut.  I'm not sure it's as racist as people keep thinking it is, but that never stopped Disney from censoring before.

As far as stuff to add, might I recommend segments that were intended for Fantasia 3?

There is DVD footage of Destino, Little Matchgirl and One By One.  I've never seen Lorenzo anywhere at all (by I'm still looking).

I don't know about adding anything. I really intended for this to be the original with bigger sound. Maybe somewhere down the line I might make a Supplemental disk, but this one is going to be Fantasia 1, with Deems Taylor's voice and the re-recorded 1982 soundtrack.

I usually hate when people change history, but I guess it is my selfishness that would like to see something as grand as Fantasia, while hearing something even grander than the multichannel butchered mix.

I never intended to do anything with anything recent, all this new stuff has wonderful sound. The original Fantasia does not.

Basically I want the original Fantasia to sound as good as Fantasia 2000. This 1982 re-recorded soundtrack brings a lush sound that is completely in time with Leopold Stokowski's conducting. One might say that the life is gone, but I don't. I see it more as someone being guided by another's hand.

I'm confused, what are you using as a source for Deems Taylor.

From what I understand his version has never been in any home video release format.  All that exists is the 1982 Hugh Douglas and the 2000 Corey Burton mixes.

Frankly, if you do have a source for it, I'd like to integrate him back into the current DVD release.

Btw, Pastoral was on the "Magic and Music" episode of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color", complete and uncensored.  I don't know of a source for this though.

For the life of me though, I can not figure out what is "racist" about the scene.  IIRC, they also zoomed to remove the animated nudity.

The 1991 release had Deems Taylor's voice. It was a rehash of the 1946 road show version(aside from the censored Centaur).

The 1982 and 2000 versions were the ones that replaced his voice. I know the 1991 release is Deems Taylor's voice because of this 1953 record:

Just get Molly's rip of it. It is the original and it sounds very good.

There's a 16mm print of Fantasia on up on Ebay. I asked the seller, and was told the Pastoral Symphony scenes are not censored.

Also posting this info in the Vaultbreakers Disney preservation thread.

That is a good find. Maybe one of our fellow members will snag it. I would, but I think somebody who knows what they are doing should have it.

There is someone on ioffer that has been selling a restored version of the scene (Google: ioffer, pastoral, fantasia).   It may be somehow related to Andrea Ippoliti's restoration (which was a hybrid of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" and the Fantasia DVD.  It is posted on YouTube. http://classiccartoons.blogspot.com/2008/07/return-of-sunflower.html

Has anyone seen the DVD version or any fan restored version?
