I actually almost like that different people pronounce names differently: Tarkin says "Lee-ah" where Luke says "Lay-ah", Obi-Wan says "Tattoo-in" where Luke says "Tah-tooine", Lando says "Hehn" where Leia says "Hahn" and Han says "Hun". Similarly to people having different accents, it makes the thing more believable. If everyone speaks the same way it can sound too artificial.

Absolutely, but the problem is that Luke has never pronounced Tatooine that way up to that point and never pronounces it that way again. Like you said, he says "Tah-tooine" not "Tah-dooine" Maybe it's just my ears, but it sounds way different. different enough that I thought he must be reffering to a similarly named planet like Dantooine.

...However if you were referring to the way Lando says Han, then I've got no quarrel with you good sir or mam. That's fine like wine.

Ray: hmm. I can't remember if Luke actually says the planet's name anywhere else. How does he say it elsewhere?

ya know, I'm struggling to remember now... Seems he does at some point... maybe the radio drama? I know I've at least heard Mark Hamill say it..

I don't think Luke says the planet's name at any other time in the movies.

And the fact that people pronounce other things differently is fine.  But that one line just sounds so... awckward!  It's not that it's a different pronunciation, it's the fact that it sounds like a totally different word.

I'm going to say speak for yourself on that one. I don't remember ever having trouble figuring out what he was saying, even before I'd seen ROTJ and knew where they were going.

Yeah if it were to be edited, the Radio Dramas would have to be the source.  I remember that did confuse me at first, but back in those pre-home video, pre-Internet days, we were left to use our brains and figure it out ourselves.  :)

He says Tatooine in the recently released pre-ESB telephone calls on the official site. It was my first thought, that I don't recall him saying that before.

As for "Haan", that's always bugged me because ts the way the writer/director says it, but he didn't make his actors stick to one pronunciation, which you think would be Lucas' because it's his character...

It's amazing how many officially released materials refer to him as Hans Solo.

Thanks for the information about EU!

In Swedish magazine MAD, Han Solo was named Hans Olof....  (common names for 60+ swedes)                  :-)

Ady, i had suggested in the past that in the bounty hunter scene some parts of the set should change so its actually the bridge and not something that resembles it. I think you said that the shot was not supposed to be on the bridge.

Anyways these images can show what i mean. Since we know from the establishing shot that there arent 2 doors leading to the bridge but one big (even we see one of them at the end that you cleverly cropped :D) it gives a solid concept of the layout of the bridge.

Not 100% accurate but the key parts are there.

I think Dantooine might be pronounced differently in the same way, but I might be wrong.  There might be an instance of the the same actor using different pronunciations of the same name.  I quite like having different ways of saying the same word though. :-)

The AtSt clip is good, a bit too cgi looking...

They all are, really (the snowtroopers one is best, but the door mechanism still reeks of CG in its ultra smooth motion, and the AT-AT clip looks like a video game), but seeing it's copyrighted 2003 makes me wonder what it would look like with 7 more years of technique/experience/etc...

Around friends and gaming I have a fair idea how CGI, even home made by talented artists, has progressed over the last decade, I'd say a current render could make excellent background action scenes. I like the idea of the AT-STs being destroyed because it also makes the rebel towers actually do something - and reinforces the impact of the scene where the AT-AT that was struck by a tower didn't suffer any damage. They suddenly become far more menacing...

Oh, and yes, Hoth is an amazing piece. It feels like a real battle and such a far cry from the prequels' CGI senseless ground melees...

Luke's pronunciation of Tatooine at the end always confused me as well (I saw the movie originally in 80). To be honest, I don't think I understood that word until the 90s. And that was only after I sat down and watched all 3 movies back-to-back and had the context of the beginning of Return of the Jedi.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

You got those depictions of the bridge in larger higher res? Look great.

When I heard Luke say it the first time, I thought 'interesting.' Nothing more. When you have people saying Lee-ah, Lay-ah, Hawn, HEHn (whatever), etc...it doesn't really matter.

I always pronounced them

Lay ah

Hawn

Even when I was a little kid who pronounced things poorly.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I think we should have the FAT-AT!!

;)

I have been waiting a long time for that post, HR :-)

Mini Ric approves.

It would be a heck of a lot easier than animating the legs!

I say the FAT-AT replaces the AT-ST.  It would still give you eagle eyed fans something to look for in the scene.
