I just hope warners does not issue a cease and desist order. like they did with the fanmade Superman II restored international cut once their own Donner cut was released.

How do you go about getting warners to release the longer tv version.  As far as i know the only reason they never released it on dvd was because this cut was not intended by Donner.

The salkinds created the cut.  I say just release it on dvd and be done with it even if they must use an A directed by Allen Smithee, lol.

I find the donner directors cut to be inferior to both the theatrical and the unauthorized by the director tv version.  The theatrical audio is so much more superior than the one with the new fake cooked up discrete 5.1 with new incorrect modern sound effects and design.  The 6 track mix shoud have been on the dvd as well as the 2.0 original 35mm mix restored.

According to Donner if i remember the vaulted elements were in such poor shape ato be deemed unusable.  But since then the music itself has been found in its original superior form and released on cd in a deluxe set even better than the rhino release from film score monthly.

So how much do you want to bet they found the original dialogue and effects reels too.  And they just don't want to spend the money on a restoration.  All the superman films should be available on blu ray in their theatrical forms and restored.  The donner cut of supes 1 with different color timing and soundtrack than the original hardly counts imho.  Nor does the Superman Returns picture which already has an excellent release supposedly in HD.

Superman itself should be restored from its original negative what we got on dvd was the old restoration from 2000-2001 now outdated and obsolete.  I want a new 4k scan of the 35mm process and a 6k scan of the vistavision plates on dvd and blu ray.  With both versions of the theatrical audio restored and mixed properly.

I doubt warners would pay for a Robert Harris level Godfather type restoration though.

I would not claim they are incapable on such a fine restoration though.  As their Adventures of Robin Hood restoration in glorious technicolor proves that to be in error.

A Lossless PCM stereo track on a blu ray release of the theatrical would allow people to finally get rid of their laserdisc copies.

The Salkinds did the tv version. Where Donner had final cut over the theatrical release he did not for home video or television. In reality there's nothing Donner could do if the tv cut was to come out on DVD. It's just a courtesy sometimes by the studios not to step on directors toes, but we all know that goes out the window when cash is involved.

If WB orders a cease and deacist that just means they're working on bringing it out.

The sound elements were all found. Think about it. They obviously needed an isolated voice track to be able to add the new sound fx to it, not to mention the cleaned up music cues- which were off slightly to their original timing.

Listen to some of the scenes in the SII Donner Cut and you'll see what I mean. More specifically the alternate take of Luthor and Miss Teschmacher walking in the Fortress. It's raw sound. You can tell because everytime Lex takes a step it sounds like he's walking on a wooden surface. Clunk, clunk instead of the original theatrical version where it sound like he's actually walking on packed snow. The sounds are there, but like you said; they just don't want to spend the time and/or money on it.

WB is pretty much done with Supe on video for the time being. They even stated in a recent chat when asked about any further releases on video that they've "been there, done that". If people are willing to buy it (which is obvius since in all their live chats it keeps getting brought up) then friggin milk it. (SEE: GEORGE LUCAS)

Look at the SM Ultimate Collection set. It sold out instantly. As did the original FSM CD printing.

You're not alone in your wish list. Hell, I'll even take the tv cut in mono... So long as it's in widescreen.

I wish Anchor Bay owned the rights. They know how to treat a product for the fanboys. They treated (the inferior to SM) release of Supergirl with the respect Superman The Movie should have gotten.

If I had my wish, then in addition to the great stuff we already have, they'd finally put out:

Superman: The Movie restored TV cut in widescreen

Superman II Donner Cut with an actual effects budget (the Phantom Zone...oy) and no lame high-pitched dubs for Superman

Superman II restored TV cut in widescreen

Superman III with fully restored widescreen deleted scenes (don't think I need them reinserted, but it would be nice to have them in a better format than some old TV print--and I believe there was still a scene or two missing from the DVD, like the room service guy at the hotel confusing Clark)

Superman IV restored director's cut

You could literally make a box set of restored extended cuts in addition to the tin (which is great, by the way--don't mean to sound like a whiny snot).  Just my $0.02.

At any rate, keep up the good work, guys!

There was tons missing from the deleted SIII scenes.

A short bit w/ Jimmy and CK on the bus to Smallville.

Extended montage of Gus causing havoc around the world at Wheatking.

Vera pulling the wire as Lorelei excercises.

Extended SM and Lorelei talking on top of the Statue of Liberty and the guards below shouting to her not to jump "you have everything to live for.. I know. I've just seen you".

Vera plugging her ears w/ cotton during SM and Lorelei getting it on.

Alaska oil pumps starting back up.

The ever famous Frank Oz cameo.

Webster trying to pry open the computer doors to get out.

and more plus a few snippets and extensions here and there.

My wish list (all hopefully w/ restored pic and sound but I ain't too picky as long as they're in widescreen):

Disc 1 Superman- The Movie Theatrical

Disc 2 Superman- Thau Movie (2001)

Disc 3 Superman- The Movie TV Version (widescreen)

Disc 4 Superman- The Movie 4 hour Donner Workprint as shown to WB execs in 1978

Disc 5 Superman II Theatrical

Disc 6 Superman II The Richard Donner Cut

Disc 7 Superman II TV Version (widescreen)

Disc 8 Superman III Theatrical

Disc 9 Superman III TV Version (widescreen)

Disc 10 Superman IV Theatrical

Disc 11 Superman IV Workprint.

Disc 12-

Original Making of docus

The 3 2001 STM making of docus

Teasers and theatrical trailers for all the films

TV and radio spots

You Will Believe docu.

Deleted scenes for all 4 films

Wishful thinking, indeed.

Wow the cleaned up tv footage is a huge improvement over the footage that has been available for years and in pal format, on a bootleg.

If you don't mind pal speed up and the characters sounding like they are on helium, lol.

Made it unwatchable for me yours is much better.

At least PAL speedup is easy to reverse in MPlayer and Audacity...

I still have no way to reverse PAL telecine x.x

Talk to Manono at VideoHelp.  He was extremely helpful in doing all kinds of crazy IVTC things.  I believe I even once had a source that was from PAL that was then converted to NTSC and he was able to figure out the algorithm so AVISynth could deinterlace the whole thing.

Yes!

This is going to be badass.

The anthology was finally released on blu ray without the longer TV cut of Superman.

I was surprised that according to a review they actually bothered to include the 35mm mix in 2.0 on the blu ray of the theatrical cut, i don't have a blu ray player and have no way of knowing if the 5.1 is another new mix or the 70mm mix which all have been waiting years to hear again.

Any news on the release status of this project would be welcome.

As far as I can tell, the 5.1 mix is just a lossless version of the 5.1 mix from the previous Theatrical Cut DVD.

The 2.0 mix was on the replacement discs of that DVD as well (after fans complained), so I would have been more surprised if WB decided to leave it off.
