*sigh* from otta space. Ive told you before....
Look, if you're not going to take this seriously...
*sigh*
(Note to self: stop trying)
You're just not supposed to use the actual word
I haven't caught the begining of the story (and I don't want)... Just would have I find more interesting to see explained to DS how do you consider this "famous" word exactly, what would have shown in the same time how much respect everyone who intervened use to show to their neighboors (what is only obvious in C3PX's posts)... Or something of that taste. Because telling someone that it's "no no" is the worst excuse I ever read.
Whatever, I can assure that even for an other european, DS's posts are very strange sometimes. I think this guy is a kind of german poet full of alcool and drugs. :)
Correct. But with a bit more evil, and a tad more malice.

Fine.
Darth, do you know why we don't use the n-word in the US?
No ideas, pump me up wit that knowlege Frinkmaster.....
Ah, so i see.....Its from where im from then. Many appologies to anyone offended...i just thought it was common slang globaly.....Me stupid....no one understands whoot im saying anyhow :-)
Man, C3PX summed up on my feelings on this subject beautifully. I have nothing else to say except to point this out:

You know political correctness and oversensitivity have gone too far when you get to things like this.

Im just happy no-one posted *popcorn* as a reply as that sort of grates my cheese..

Your cheese is grating on me.

watch these and your popcorn won't be wasted:
Even more ridiculous than people with enough time on their hands to watch that entire 300 thing, is the person who had enough time on their hands to make it.

Aw, come on. No one wants to discuss the suppression of the English language when people confuse a totally innocuous word like 'niggardly' for... that other word and actually cause people to lose their jobs over it? Not that it's as amazing as seeing a Sailor Moon-themed Sparta, but still...

I liked the 300 gif, its like watching a bad arsed funny fan edit...that makes no scence at all.
Im now officially grated by the one with the bad avitar, that makes no scence at all..
That whole niggardly thing is so ridiculous, that I actually find it offensive that my species can be that stupid. I am honestly surprised the Spanish language isn't banned in public schools, or at least forbidden from teaching students the word for the color black.
From that, Darth Solo, you can see how hopelessly pathetic my country is when it comes to political correctness, and it should no longer surprise you that my fellow countrymen had such an over the top reaction to your comments.
Just so I don't offend anyone, I am going to bleep out this wikipedia quote from the link Gaffer posted,
"******" derives from the Spanish/Portuguese word *****, meaning "black", and probably also the French ****, which likewise has become a racist insult in American culture. Both ***** and noir (and therefore also ***** and ******) ultimately come from ***rum, the accusative case of the Latin word ****, meaning "black".
So, while it clearly states above that it is a racist insult in American culture, it is our internets, so your culture doesn't mean fuck all to us! We are going to force our cultural standards down your throat and you are going to like it! And if you don't comply, we are going to get offended and indignant and do our damnedest to make you feel like shit and completely unwelcomed! Then we are going to sit back with a glowing feeling of righteousness at having set some poor asshole straight and making the world a slightly better, loving, and understanding place to live in.
Sorry if anyone feels I am being an ass or like I am picking on them, I don't mean anything personally toward anyone. I am just in a bad mood, and stuff like this annoys me.

FFS im not mad at you really.
Like i said, it was a slur.
I do have respect for Afro carrabeans and accept them in my life as an equal.
Its just all a bad joke baked in nievity, appologies again, to anyone offended....
The Han chariot should be mentioned in the Worst Edit Thread, it's genius.
I know I said I wasn't going to post about this again. But I think C3PX when too far in his comments and I feel I must reply.

over the top? C3PX, go to a meeting of the NAACP and use the n-word and see what kind of reaction you get there and then come back here tell me that our reaction was over the top. If you come to Camden, NJ(a largely black city) and use that word, there is a good chance you'll get beat up or worse. I'm not sure what the niggardly thing has to do with this. Solo didn't use the word niggardly, he used the n-word.
C3PX, you being an American know how offensive that word is perceived here, so I can't understand this calling our reaction over the top. All I did was say that I didn't like the use of the racial slurs and asked that we refrain from using them. Its not like I cursed him out and called him names or went to Jay and asked for him to be banned.

wtf C3PX? I care about other cultures a whole lot. This wasn't about us not caring for another culture or shoving our culture down another's throat, this was about us not understanding another culture. Until this incident I honestly thought that n-word was considered as bad to use in other countries as it is to use here. If I had originally known about the cultural difference, I suppose I might have reacted differently. Still, I think it is important to note that this forum is made up of primarily Americans, is themed after an American movie, and is owned by an American. So the culture of this forum is, kind of, American. I'm sure I even realized, at the time that Solo wasn't American.
One thing that really about upsets me about C3PX's statement about us not caring for other cultures, is that fact that we got upset at Solo is because we care about other cultures. Solo wasn't offending my culture, I'm white, he was offending the black culture of my country, and I wanted them to be respected.

well you know what annoys me? people, especially those from my own county, pissing on the USA. I'm tired of it. I tired of this feeling that it is always the US that must respect the other counties, and never the other way around. BOTH cultures must comprise a little. I try real hard to get along with people who are different from me. Take a look at my sig. No, I don't always get right, but who does? I know I make big blunders somethings(just take a look at what just happened in the politics thread). But I try, and will continue to keep trying, that is all I can say.

apology accepted, and I apologize for misunderstanding your culture.
Here's a little advice, if it is clear that someone is seriously offended by comments made by you, quit the joking and seriously address the situation. Continuing to make jokes when someone has claimed to be offended by you, stands a good chances of further fanning the flames.

Yes, yes. I do love a quote in that article that mockingly says we should stop saying "snigger" because it's too close to that other word. I'm certainly not in favor of anyone saying hate speech that offends anybody, but I just can't wrap my head around this particular word. First off, I've always been of the mind that a word or symbol only has the particular meaning that a context imbues itself with. I believe we talked about this in the Politics thread last fall. And apparently this particular word started out in a very benign context. But my main beef is that, if it's so terrible a word to use, why are those insulted with it okay with using it in regards to one another? I mean, it's a bit of a leap between "terrible offensive hate word" and "modern slang."
But, yeah, it's really the oversensitivity that gets me, particularly in regards to niggardly. I honestly can't believe there's ever been a real controversy over that. Anyone with the least bit of sense should look at that and immediately laugh it out of court. But the sad thing is, that word is going to die. Why? Because white people are genuinely afraid of getting fired/beaten up/called a racist.

if the word that you refer to here is the n-word, go watch Roots and get back to me. It is a word that slave masters used to refer to their black slaves. It is very offensive to black people. I think they have a right to request that the word never be used again.
Gaffer Tape said:

First off, I am not ok with anyone using it. But their defense of that would be that because of the history of slavery and discrimination, white people have lost the right to use the n-word. I don't agree with that logic, but that is the argument I've heard given. I have also heard many black people say that no one, including other black people should use the n-word. They are bothered when rappers and other black people use the n-word.

to be honest, until that incident with David Howard, I hadn't ever heard of the word niggardly. To use such an unusual word, knowing how similar it sounds and is spelled to the n-word, and not immediately explain the difference between the two words is asking for trouble. David Howard(unless he is real stupid) had to know that what he said was going to be misinterpreted. What does it say about him that he didn't make himself more clear or choose another word?

Just learning the ropes big man. Its a trial and error thing...and its reading as error always
I got the thing about fanning the flames, well, now. I just thought we were all here to play games....i could be wrong

No, no, no, Warb! That's terrible logic! Again, see my mention of the word "snigger." Should we remove any word that sounds remotely like other offensive words just because we're afraid IGNORANT PEOPLE (not an insult, just a statement of fact) are not familiar with certain words and will take them the wrong way? I'm sorry, but I don't feel comfortable censoring myself just because other people don't know better.

snigger is not as unusual and as unknown as niggardly was at the time. I'm not saying he should have censored himself, just explained him immediately and more clearly. We are not talking about a word that anyone with a highschool education would have known. It is a very unusual word. If was just ignorant people who misunderstood David Howard, then I am ignorant, because I misunderstood him as well. I think most people AT THE TIME did.
