Info Wanted: what is the best anamorphic preservation of the Original Trilogy?

Hi Everyone,

I used to frequent this forum several years ago, but not much lately… Life’s been crazy. Anyways, my wife and I just installed a home theater in our bonus room upstairs with a 121’ screen, etc. We love it.

Anyways, the 2006 DVD’s of the original trilogy are obviously non-anamorphic.

Can someone recommend to me the best anamorphic preservations of the three original films? I assume there are some great ones sourced from the 2006 DVD’s now, but I’d love to get some opinions on which are the best to seek out.

Thanks so much for any advice. I’ve been backreading the forum the last hour or so and I miss this place! Great people here. 😃

Thanks again! 😄

A lot of people seem to like dark_Jedi's burns of the g-force script, though I have very serious reservations about them for their detail and grain removal and would not recommend them for this reason.

My own vote goes for Editdroid's 2010 pass at Star Wars. "LFL Pwnage" is a good alternative, even if it is DVD-5.

For ESB you have Adywan's theatrical re-construction. It's technically not 100% accurate but I doubt you will notice, and it's quite beautiful.

Dark_Jedi is working on a new version that includes all the original audio mixes as well (1977 mono/stereo, Hairy_Hen's recreation of the 1977 70mm six-track mix in 5.1, and DJ himself is working on syncing the 1980 and 1983 stereo mixes for ESB and ROTJ).

EditDroid has a decent one out now, with the 1977 mono mix and a newly-created 5.1 track, but I don't like their Greedo subtitles at all.

Awesome! I'm downloading EditDroids's Star Wars and Adywan's Theatrical Reconstruction of ESB.

What about Jedi? Any consensus or recommendations on a good one?

Again, thanks so much for your time!

No modified GOUT DVD has been made specifically for ROTJ, but G-Force's script HAS been applied to it.  I don't know where to find it, but it's out there.

Um, dark_jedi would like to have a word with you.

To my knowledge his script for that movie was G-Force's, untouched except for subtitle timings.

Any idea where someone would find that? ;) I've checked several trackers including the spleen... :)

Yes, but did G-Force make a DVD?  You said no DVD had been made, but dark_jedi made one from G-Force's script.

At any rate, I think we're saying the same thing.

ZackR, PM sent.

Careful, TV's Frink.  That's a custom DVD you're talking about.  I'd PM him.

I think if you watched them in their entirety you would be pleasantly surprised. AFAIK G-force was very cautious/conservative with any grain removal (even on the older scripts).

Said specifically, Frink.  Read on and you'll see that I mentioned there was one.

Wuh, wait, what?

I'm gonna guess you mean 121", or that's one heck of a bonus room! ;)

lol Can we all come round to watch ESB:R when it's out?  There must be room for everyone if you have a screen that size.  :-)

I did. The older versions (of dark_jedi's burns) look horrendous in terms of smoothing and softening; he was extremely aggressive in terms of grain removal. However, his latest version seems to have corrected all the mistakes of the previous release, based on the one cap I have seen. It's a lot to go on just one cap, but it looks like the de-grain/detailing issue has been re-done so as to be very mild. With the great audio options he is working on it looks to be the best version in the making, but we'll have to see when it finally gets out.

Hey everyone,

I was out of town unexpectedly but was able to grab the suggested versions. Took them on the trip and they were great.

I'm going to watch Star Wars with our son next week (he's six and has never seen it). Cannot wait.

And yes, the screen is 121"...inches, not feet! :)

Thanks again for the wonderful suggestions. You're all terrific.

Best Regards,
Zack
