Idea & Info: 'Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown' and 'Race For Your Life Charlie Brown' - airing on HD channels throughout June and July... how bout a DVD preservation?

 (Edited)

The last two of the four Charlie Brown theatrical movies listed above were never released on DVD. I hear they are airing on HD channels this and next month, so would anyone who has those channels wanna record them and preserve them to DVD (and Blu-Ray too I guess, but I don’t have Blu-Ray)? That would be awesome!

Yes, that would be awesome.  Someone please make this happen.

Here's some more info (from http://fivecentsplease.org/):

Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown and Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown on HDNet Movies During June & July 2010

The theatrical movies Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown and Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown are being broadcast in high definition on the cable channel HDNet Movies during the months of June and July 2010. Check out this schedule here for airtimes:

http://www.hdnetmovies.com/movies_printableschedules.html

While Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown is being broadcast in high definition, is it being broadcast in the 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 16:9. However, this is most likely the aspect ratio the film was originally created in, so this is not a mistake and the sides of the movie have not been chopped off. While not all cable systems carry the channel, it should be an excellent opportunity to check out these rarely broadcast (and unavailable on DVD) movies if you do get the channel. Thanks to Andy Dursin for the tip! (June 10, 2010)

Somebody please handle this!  I don't think I get that channel, and even if I did, I lack the means to transfer DVR recordings to my computer.  I may be a youngun, but Nick used to do reruns of the various shows/TV movies of Peanuts and boy do I miss them!

Someone do this, please! Also, add the TV Spot for Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown as a special feature for the film.

I'm that guy. That one solitary guy on both forums. (Sigh)

But only on Comcast. They let me cap by firewire. (See bottom link in my sig).

Jesus H. Rodrigues!!! Can they make it any tougher to capture???

Comcast doesn't carry HDNet channels. (The best they'll do is On Demand for the original programming only. In 5 cities - which I don't live in).

AT&T U-Verse has HD-Net. But not the firewire capture. AT&T would need an an HD capture card or HD Personal DVR. I have neither. And I don't think I can afford to get both U-Verse TV and Comcast TV.

Verizon carries HD Net. I'd love to have FIOS bandwidth - and the last I heard, Verizon lets you do the firewire thing on most/all channels. But it's not likely to spread out beyond a tiny patch of the county above us.

Many Sattelite providers carry HD Net. But none have the firewire thing.

All cable providers have firewire. But half of them have DVRs with broken firewire. Of the good half, it's random chance if they have HD Net. A lot of cable are very stingy with HD channels.

If the world worked the way it should, a Verizon customer, or a Non-Comcast cable customer, would post HD firewire caps to Usenet. But tons of stuff that should be up there, never shows up.

Depressing Update: Bon Voyage has been on since May, and the only HD on Usenet is a Christmas special "Charlie Brown's Christmas Tales", which is on DVD. A few things in SD, but not "Race" or "Bon Voyage".

Don't get your hopes up... but I'll ask around and see if I can dig up somebody on U-Verse. See if I can hang an SD Personal DVR off their SD output. That'd be pitiful, but better than nothing. (It'd be nice if they'd get it on their AT&T DVR, but I don't know anyone who's DVR isn't chronic-ly full.

Oh! Hey marioxb! How's it goin?

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

Is there any way to get HDnet movies via a PC? Dish Network carries HDnet movies. I left an old inactive Dish 500 dish on my dad's house. If I go to some 24 hour store tonight and buy an HD reciever, can I make Dish Network activate it instantly? Like, I plug it in, call them up, bam, working! Would that work at all?

Posted June 18 on thedigitalbits.com:

Anyway, here's some interesting release news: Warner Home Video has set A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving... for Blu-ray Disc release on 10/5 (SRP $24.98 each). They also have a Peanuts Holiday Collection due on Blu-ray that same day (SRP $42.93), including It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

You've got to figure the rest will follow.  Just something to consider before going to extremes to cap these.

Well, thanks, but that is probably unlikely for the time being. Those you mentioned are all TV specials. Warner Bros. currently has the rights to all of those. However, there were also four theatrical movies, still under control by Paramount.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown (on DVD)

Snoopy Come Home (on DVD)

Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown (not on DVD, airing on HDNet movies)

Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!) (not on DVD, airing on HDNet movies)

And the three holiday ones have been on DVD for 10 years... RFYL and BV have never come to DVD.

I haven't found anybody with HD Net. :-C

Yeah, Paramount isn't very good about releasing stuff. I suspect we only got some famous TV series, after CBS-TV came into the picture. (I haven't checked the release dates). CBS is no help for theatrical.

On the other hand, someone went to the expense of transferring it to HD. That often foreshadows a release. It also means they might defray some of the expense by farming it out to other networks. (I imagine Nick and Cartoon Network are too lame, but maybe TMC, AMC, Encore...). (Isn't Disney Channel stuck on their own catalog? I never pay any attention to them).

CED is a lot better than videotape. The quality is closer to laserdisc, and a good (composite-output) player will give you a clean picture. (Once the needle dislodges any dust deposits). I've got a nice player, but I don't recall seeing that cover before I boxed up the collection that came with the player.

Was it on laserdisc? (Currently, I only have an non-decent LD player).

eBay only shows VHS, at the moment.

This really didnt peak my interests so I really didnt give it a look until now but I thought I would chime in

The whole capping this thing via firewire is moot for one reason

HDNet and HDNet movies (or whatever its called) is 5C encrypted at all times via the broadcasting network and not the cable distributor

So it doesnt matter if you have Comcast or ATT or FioS or Cox or whatever

I believe its been like that on HDNet for a few years now

Edit: Ill attempt to cap Race for your life CB on Wednesday....but I know it will be encrypted

Been wondering if they're premium channels flagged to prohibit it. Thanks for settling that question for me.

Would you be able record it to a personal DVR, from the S-Video output? Full SD would be better than what's been released so far.

(A lot of newer personal DVRs honor 5C, and other flags, but I thought I'd ask).

The LDDB lists both films as being released on LD. Bon Voyage was only released in Japan, so there would be subtitles unless it has a bilingual track.

One seller on LDDB has a copy of Bon Voyage for sale at the moment.

Hmm, I might have to buy that laserdisc of Bon Voyage... considering that some of the US DVDs have Japanese language tracks, it's promising that the LD might as well, so maybe no burned-in Japanese subs?

Also, I hear there were cuts in the VHS release. I wonder if the Japanese LD has these too? Too bad no one got the HD Net version, I hear they present all movies 100% as in theaters.

Did anybody watch it?  I'm wondering how the colours and definition were.  I have some digital rips of the shows, but the PQ is quite poor.

Well, tried to cap it but like I knew.... it was 5c encrypted so no dice

Ass for the content, looked decent, it was 4x3 content but in HD not SD, so probably 16x9 pillarbox, I took a quick screen with my camera so you could see, not the best but whatever
