Man, I remember how many of us on here had strong opinions on how "Star Trek' was going to turn out. I know that I went into the theater knowing I was NOT going to like "Star Trek" 2009. Funny thing is that I found it very enjoyable. The exact opposite thing happened with "Watchmen".
Another example was that I was expecting to LOVE "The Dark Knight". I was totally absorbed in the hype and publicity campaign on that one. Got my opening night ticket, and did the standing on long lines for hours bit. Yet, when it was all over, I hated the film! Not just disliked, but hatted. Now come to think of it, the same thing happened with "Episode 1".
So now after a few years, a friend asked me to watch it again. I reluctantly sat down re-watched it on Blu-ray. I'm not sure why, but I liked it so much more this last viewing. So much so, I ordered the disc to sit on my movie shelf. It sure seems that the excessive hype and publicity may have seriously hurt setting up the film for me. Some films you just need to discover without any set up at all.
