Despite his lack of smiley face or wink, I think Xhonzi was just playing around when he said that. I know some people have that attitude, but I don't see Xhonzi as that type.
When I first got my Xbox and only had a few achievements and looked at everyone else's and felt somehow inferior, I really hated the achievement system and thought it was a dumb competitive device. Now that I have a ridiculous large number, I don't even pay attention to how many I have. But I am not really fond of the system, because I have spend countless hours online with good friends working toward the goal of getting achievements together long aftet that game has been beaten and would be no longer played. Adds more life to a game, and gives you fun extra goals to go for. Some achievements I don't even bother with, because they'd take too much of my precious time, but plenty of them are slightly challenging and add a bit of extra fun to a game.
I had a great time finding all the Halo skulls with my friend, and even more fun recently working on Left 4 Dead 2 achievements with another friend. It is a good time for just chatting and having fun without actually having to worry about being too good at the game. One on one online co-opable achievements are my favorite.
