Star Wars Episode II: The Galaxy Divided (The Brash Cut) - CANCELLED — Page 9

I keep staring at the color altered Fett pic on page one.  I LOVE the breaking dawn look of it all.  I just tried to do it myself with the scene in FCP 5, but I can only do it with straight color correction.  Which means Obi-Wan's saber core turns amber, and it affects the color of the jet pack rockets and the laser blasts.  So, without doing a full re-rotoscope, I couldn't make it happen.  I hope you have more dynamic results.  Inspired idea.

I'm really hoping for some Episode 2 goodies on the Star Wars Soundboards soon. It'll be so much easier smoothing out the sound in places if I have some clean dialogue for the parts I'm altering.

I'm still thinking of a good way to link the dart to Kamino without the Jedi seeming presumptuous. (I mean just because it was made on Kamino doesn't mean the person using it is anything to do with the planet, let alone that he'd still reside there)

At the moment, my ideas are:

1. It's made from a specific alloy that's being used to create republic weaponry for the army - in the facility on Kamino, no less.

I like this idea the best, i mean its more like detective work or something you see in csi too. tracing a metal back to its own planet is more reliable than taking a fat burger bar guys word for it. Dexsterr Jettster was a pointless character, imagine how much time was used creating this character, doin the cgi for him and then cgi for obi wans robe? too much time wasted

Any update on this?

No updates really. I keep intending to move onto the audio cleanup but am finding more and more to do along the way, so my previously "completed" rough cut is still a work in progress :)

Well I've done a lot of work on reordering the scene where we're introduced to Dooku. A lot of flipped shots and some reversing of the speed at certain points to account for continuity problems created by my cuts.

There are a lot of other things I've done, but it's hard to keep track.

Unfortunately I've been a little preoccupied with other things for the last few weeks, however I hope to get right back on it very soon.

I have a ROUGH clip of that scene uploading right now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opslWlOgAbA

Now that I've had a look at my timeline I can remember some of the other things I've been working on.

1. The scene of Obi being given a tour by the Kaminoans. This has been reedited with a view to redubbing the Kaminoan Prime Minister. We do not see child clones and we only see the soldier clones from a distance.

2. Anakin and Padme on the refugee ship. I've cut a lot of Anakin's dialogue and the lingering glances between them in silence says so much more to the audience than the awful script ever could.

3. I toyed with keeping the meadow scene. I did some cutting but just think it's too short now to keep in the final film.

Can't remember anything else right now. I'm sure there's more. I've been back and forth through the film so many times it's hard to keep track.

My opinion (forgive me if I've said this before) - there is precious little believable interaction between Anakin and Padme, so saving anything that qualifies is of utmost importance.  The second half of the meadow scene (riding the ass animal) is awful and should never stay in any edit.  But the first half, the dialogue half, isn't too bad, and has some nice interaction between them.  Especially the last shot where Padme looks at Anakin with the first hint of interest.

Most editors have left most (if not all) of that first half in and I think it's important to do so.

Again, just my opinion.

I know where Brash is coming from.  Cutting down the meadow scene dialogue makes the scene too short on its own.  What's more is that, because it's so short, it lacks substantial emotional punctuation before cutting back to Kamino.  Basically, it gets lost in the mix, and feels like an awkward edit.  It becomes forgettable.

While I hate, absolutely HATE the second half of the scene (based simply on the horribly designed animals), you have to split hairs.  If you want the love story to progress in even a somewhat believeable fashion, you'll have to retain every possible scene to help move their relationship along (which the original film does horribly), and bite the bullet by keeping the crappy following scene.  The other option is cut it all out, and hope the remaining scenes are enough to make it work.

The problem with the Phantom Edit of EPISODE II is that it dumps so much of these scenes.  It jumps from a scene where Padmé denies that Anakin is her boyfriend to them kissing, and then, implying they slept together all night.  It's too bare minimum.  With some ingenuinity, you can make most of the scenes work almost beautifully.  Plus, you can shuffle the scenes around to fit whatever progression you choose.  Unfortunately, in the meadow scene instance, it is a splitting hairs situation.

As for your Dooku scene?  Nicely done.  I'm sure in the 100s of films Christopher Lee has done, you can find him saying whatever you need him to.  Making it all seamless is the only obstacle.

SSWR had actually already found the soundbyte of Christopher Lee saying "why?" in Fellowship of the Ring. I just haven't ripped it from the DVD yet. I can't really take credit for that. I really needed a way to make Obi's hostility towards Dooku more founded and rational, and SSWR provided.

Angel, it's a shot where you see a doorway or some dark space to the left, (at 0:58) but the way I've cut it, you can't see the doorway in the next shot anymore. You should have a better eye for perspective than I do. I'll have to get you a screengrab when I'm next on my mac if you're interested.

What does everyone think of the direction change of Obi Wan's rotation at 0:22? This was in order to account for the flipped shots before. Unfortunately, the camera is moving slightly, so it makes the reversal a little more jarring than I'd like.

Also ignore the little hiccup at 1:35. I don't know what happened there. Something messed up when pasting the scene into a new sequence for a straightforward export.

I have no idea if it is possible but if after "I don't believe you" Dooku said something like "That is why you will lose" (which sounds like a classic bad guy line but in this context isn't).

Not only would it mirror Yoda's line to Luke in ESB it would also show how prescient Dooku is.

Ultimately the Jedi do lose because the Dark Lord is controlling the Senate and they are taking sides instead of investigating his claims.

I do take your point, however my biggest problem with the first half of that meadow scene is Padme talking about her ex boyfriend. It really makes me cringe, and she just appears to be using descriptive language more fitting for a 90s highschool romance movie. It takes you out of a galaxy far far away in just the same way as Owen referring to Beru as his "girlfriend".

This is why the way I've cut it omits all that, and instead starts on the long shot, but with Padme saying "you really don't like politicians do you?" It remains pretty unchanged from then on but I omit Anakin's "tease a senator" line and turned it into a straightforward "no no *snigger*". It ends with the shot you mention of Padme looking at Anakin with interest.

Would you think this is long enough? And also, if I was to keep it, I'm not sure where to put it. I think it would make sense to put it before the kiss.

I like the idea Bingo. Did you see SSWR's version of this scene? As Dooku leaves, he says "we will see" :)

Yes it's great isn't.

It's astonishing how jumbled up these films are.

It's almost like they are deliberately in code for us to crack.

As for the meadow scene I've just had an idea, why not have the weather suddenly change at the end of the scene (a summer storm), it would underline the possible dark implications of what Anakin is suggesting and the sound of thunder would act as a bridge between the scenes on Naboo and the next scene on Kamino.

The supper scene in a thunder storm might be fun too.

Almost as if there is a storm coming all across the galaxy.

I'm just gonna chime in here with my 2 cents:

I'm not a fan of Anakin and his views on politics. I understand that Lucas did it on purpose. I guess we're suppose to go "Oooh! That's Darth Vader talking!" But, to me, it just diminishes the power of the dark side. Anakin's view on politics, and for that matter, life, should be similar to his sons. Anakin should be a good guy who gets seduced by the power of the dark side which changes every view he has on life. Thoughts?

My thoughts, stated in my own fan edit thread, is that I can't imagine Padmé falling in love with a guy who thinks like that.  That's not even to mention the mass murder confession.  She is an intelligent person, and very clear-minded one with passionate opinions.  Padmé is very much like Leia in that she has strong principals, and stands by them to the very end.  Anakin has opinions, but they're not very well informed ones.  He is also too arrogant and foolish to really take the time to understand the whole picture, and come to an informed opinion on the matter.  Anakin, to me, comes off like some 12 year old kid talking about politics.

Even laughing it off, it's still something that would stick in her mind, and probably make her feel very uncomfortable.  How can she be married to a man with these unsettling political viewpoints?  She is a peaceful, mature, and diplomatic person while he showcases nothing but violence, anger, rudeness, and tyrannical ideals.  They are stark opposites of one another.  By all rights, their relationship, as Lucas presented it to us, should fall apart like a bad blind date.  I believe removing anything that creates turbulence between these two should be minimized as much as possible.  It diminishes their supposed romance.  That way, when thigns start going awry between them in ROTS, it's more impactful.  It basically comes down to how you want the characters to be portrayed, and where you want them to go by film's end.

My thoughts on it are that Anakin is genuinely joking...... teasing her as a politician just as Han teased Leia calling her "your worship". But nevertheless it still helps to foreshadow the rise of the Empire.
