I take it you've never heard of the Harrisongs court case. Harrison was accused of plagiarising the 60s hit He's So Fine by the Chiffons with the melody line of My Sweet Lord. Harrison lost, and consequently had to hand over all royalties to the original composers, even though his lyrics were completely different (it would have been more fair to give the composers 50%).
