So I called qwest again & found out more about the modems. Basically, they have two types of DSL, A & V. "A" is older & only works with the $70 modem, but costs $5 a month less (after the 6 month promo period where I can get any of the choices for $30 a month). "V" is newer, will work with the $10 modem but costs $5 a month more after the 1st 6 months. The $70 modem has wifi built in, the $10 modem doesn't but I can connect my own wireless router to it (according to the c/s rep, I shouldn't have a problem. He knew what I was talking about when I asked about people having trouble connecting routers to dsl modems & said this one should be fine.... dunno if I trust him though...). "A" DSL has the 896k upstream & "V" has 5Mbps upstream but I really don't think the upstream will matter to me much.
So (based on one year of service) I'm looking at either spending $70 for the wifi modem & slower upstream & knowing it'll all work or qwest will make it work OR spending $40 ($10 for the modem & an extra $5 a month for the second 6 months for faster upstream) and using my own router which could potentially cause problems that qwest wont help me fix. Why does this crap always wind up being so complicated?? grrr.
Oh, & if you like my small package, you should see my big package. I could get 40Mbps downstream & 20Mbps upstream if I wanted (for only $30 a month for the first 6 months! Then it jumps up to well over $100... ugh!)
