Love Prestige.  Love Sunshine.  Love Clue.  Haven't watched Dances With Wolves for a decade or so... but I do have the extended version on DVD.  I guess I'll have to plan to revisit that one.  It's been a while since I've seen Tombstone too, so I'll have to make a date with the wife.

We didn't see the Illusionist for a couple of years after the Prestige... just couldn't imagine how it could compare.  They are actually quite different.  Different enough that both can coexist.  We liked it, and I'm generally a fan of Norton and Giamatti... but it is rather forgettable.  I insist everyone sees Prestige that hasn't.  I tend to forget Illusionist exists.

I love Dark City, so I looked into Proyas's other work...  I had never seen the Crow and I'd heard so much good about it, I picked it up.  I guess I just didn't get it.  It bored me and didn't appeal to me at all.  I Robot does seem to be more formulaic... but at least I enjoyed it.

Willow is really good. The last time I watched it, I had sort of forgotten that Kilmer was even in it.  I'm not sure how that happened since he is by far the best part of that movie.  I think I'll have to show that one to my kids soon.

Okay, now on to my movies.  I saw Moon... and I was extremely underwhelmed.  I thought that if this was an episode of the Twilight Zone, that it would have been "average".  Can someone explain to me what I missed?

Also, Princess Bride.  We were trying to think of movies we had that the kids would want to watch.  My oldest is 7 and he has two younger sisters (5 and 3) and we thought it might be a good movie for the crew.  (Rushmore (1) doesn't really get factored into these things).

My kids' major problem is attention span.  I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not, but they have a hard time sitting still for 1.5 - 2 hours and just watching a movie.  Normally they watch things upstairs on a smallish TV and they play with their toys (and fight!) while something they've seen 100 times rolls on in the background.  But if it's a movie they've never seen before, they get to watch it in the basement on the 128"ish projection screen in total darkness.  They really like that for the first 45 minutes or so, but then they want to get down on the floor and roll around and play.  And switch seats every 2 minutes.  Either they're too creative to sit still for that long... (that's good!) or they're too impatient (that's bad!) or they contain potassium sorbate. (.... That's bad.)  Can I go now?

Back to the Princess Bride.  I think it was still a little too far over their heads, but they seemed to like it anyways.  I liked watching it on the bigscreen because I could pick out all of the 80s toys in Kevin (or whatever his name is in this movie)'s room.  Lots of He-Man, some She-Ra (I would make fun of a boy having She-Ra toys, but I know them because I had all of the same ones (they were just extra villains for He-Man to fight, so STEP OFF!)))))  And Captain America and others I've already forgotten.  Oh yeah, a Burger Kind Empire Strikes Back Glass too.

A good time was had by all.

Saw "Pandorum"

Load of POOP. Interesting sci-fi horror premise.

Then out come the low-budget LOTR orcs moving in weird frame-rates so that the audience knows they're supposed to be scary.

Throw in nonspeaking Asian farmer so that he can have an 8 minute kung-fu fight with one of the space-orcs and a couple really predictable twists and you have a film that's biggest virtue was that it was relatively short.

Hmm... we'll agree to disagree here.  I really liked Pandorum.  Could you apply your synopsis to the original Alien movie?  It seemed to work for that one.

It comes to that (IMHO of course) Alien was scary.

The Orcs in Pandorum were comical. In fact, the bad 28 Days Later jitter-frame that the film did when they were on screen made them even sillier. And that one line of technobabble they spit out to explain the Orcs was great: "We had drugs pumped into us to help us adapt to our new planet, but there guys adapted to living in a spaceship by becoming parkour athletes and looking like a bad Hellraiser fan-film! Oh yeah, and spikes out their backs."

If the Nostromo had some random Asian guy on it that had a karate fight with the Alien, I'd say that was crappy too.

I think this film had a fascinating premise: Waking up, no memories, where are we? Those goofy monsters and the kung-fu Korean-farmer just killed it for me.

The thing is, what if they HADN'T been orcs? What if the humans had survived being crazy scavenging cannibals for 800 years. Those would be some degraded SCARY FUCKING PEOPLE, and I wouldn't need shoulder-spikes and "The Ring" jerky movements to remind me they're scary.

Alien is a classic, I was thinking of making a fan edit of Pandorum - the only bit i really liked was the woman - so i would keep her character and delete everything else except the exterior spaceship shots as i kinda liked those although i couldnt work out from where the bridge appeared to be if it was pointing towards the back or the front of the ship.

speaking of fan-edits, we seem to be missing a "Which fan edit are you most desperately a-waiting and why?" chat page.

Can someone start one please?

thanks

PS. the last movie i watched was Zombieland, its ace)

PPS. Before i forget, how about a "What fan-edits most pleasantly surprised you and why?" chat page, good for recomending fan edits someone might not have thought about downloading before

You can never go home again, but i guess you can shop there.

Shutter Island - This movie really got to me.  I would say more, but I don't want to spoil anything.

I freaking LOVED Shutter Island.  Saw it in theaters.  It's the first movie that I was expecting to end, was ready to leave my seat, then it continued for 30 more minutes ... and I didn't care.  In Return of the King, I was bored to tears by the real ending, but with Shutter Island, I was enthralled the whole way through.  Fantastic film.

I rewatched Quantum of Solace the other day, which I hadn't seen since theaters - it was much better than I remembered.  I think the biggest problem is that movie had to follow the second-best Bond film of all time, so it could never live up to everyone's expectations.  I was still a bit bothered by the Bourne-y action, but that aside, it's a solid film, miles better than Brosnan's last three films or any of Moore's.

As a sidenote, I also rewatched From Russia with Love with some friends - it's still my #1 Bond film, but they were all visibly bored until the last 30 minutes or so.  At least I didn't make them watch Dr. No - now that one bores me to death ...

I also saw Coraline for the first time - it was absolutely fantastic.  The animation was beautiful, and the story was nice and creepy.  If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Tried watching Lost in Translation.  Got bored and stopped watching about 45 minutes in.  I'll probably finish it eventually, but I wasn't impressed with what I saw.

Finally, my roommate finally got me to watch the original The Pink Panther.  I'd never seen any of the films in the series.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It wasn't what I expected at all.  Looking forward to watching A Shot in the Dark next.

Now, here's where you guys can help me out.  I have a large selection of movies on my hard drive, and I haven't watched quite a few.  I want to watch another one I haven't seen soon, and I'll let you guys pick for me.

Here's the list of ones I haven't seen - what would you recommend next?

The African Queen
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Barry Lyndon
Daybreakers
For a Few Dollars More
Grave of the Fireflies
Howl's Moving Castle
The Hurt Locker
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Kiki's Delivery Service
Love Actually
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome
My Neighbor Totoro
Natural Born Killers
(Director's Cut)
The New World (Terrence Malick; Extended Cut)
Porco Rosso
[REC]²
(sequel to [REC] ... obviously)
World's Greatest Dad

I actually didn't think much of the story in Lost in Translation, but I thought that visually the film was incredibly beautiful. So much so, that by the end of the movie I had conflicted feelings, I really enjoyed it but also really disliked it both at once.

Go for one of these: Barry Lyndon, For a Few Dollars More, Grave of the Fireflies. Barry is epic and extremely underrated (and just screams for Blu ray!), FAFDM is possibly Leone's best and most concentrated film, and Grave will make anyone cry.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome should be saved for last. If you're a fan of either previous film this is a major letdown.

Am excited to see African Queen in a new transfer and New World for the 70mm sequences.

Just re-watched the Coppola Restoration of The Godfather for the umpteenth time. I have the set but still haven't watched the others. Part one's new restoration takes me back to the first time I saw the film and it rocks in the original mono.

Alice in Wonderland in a second run theater. It made the movie that much more interesting to see it non-digital, non-3D, and complete with a giant green line for an entire reel. This I suspect may be why I slightly enjoyed myself. Otherwise it's not particularly good at all. It did get me thinking how much I would like to see a print of Batman Returns.

"Food Inc."

Documentary that had some interesting points about the potential dangers of the extreme centralizing of the US food supply as well as a discussion about corn-fed vs. grass-fed cows.

Then it threw in some feel good hippy stuff about being in touch with your meat, and a one-sided anti-corporate pro-crime message that didn't actually seem to have much to do with food safety. Kinda ruined it for me.

No Way To Treat A Lady (1968).

My mother thinks she's Jewish, she has no evidence for this but she insists on acting like the textbook stereotype of a Jewish mother which makes this film (and The Phantom Raspberry Blower) feel like returning home.

Rod Steiger has a lot of fun in this movie and some of it rubbed off on this viewer.

Lee Remick is gorgeous, as is George Segal (he copes with his mother, the real star of the piece, much better than I do...shame on me).

There is a creepy undercurrent to this serial killer movie which almost feels out of place.

If a film could get away with killing older women for laughs this one could have been it (The Ladykillers doesn't count and I won't go into more detail just in case any readers haven't seen it and by it I mean the original and not the stupid remake).

Even so this film has greater integrity and artistry than Se7en but lacks the side splitting laughs of Theatre Of Blood.

PREDATORS.

All in all it could have been better but it pushes all the right buttons so I'm quite satisfied.

It only took 23 years to get a sequel that doesn't suck :). - And don't try to tell me that Predator 2 was a better or equal movie to Predator because it just isn't so.

I agree. I rolled my eyes a couple of times, but it really brought it back to it's essence.

Robert Rodriguez really paid attention to the first film. I am also glad that this movie wasn't jam packed with CGI, and when it used CGI, it was only from a distance. The Cinematography was very Old School for a film this new. All in all, it raped Avatar.

I really liked the casting in this one. At first I thought Topher Grace and Adrien Brody would be too "Wimpy" for it.

I liked this one so much, I want to buy it when it comes out. I didn't feel odd watching it, like I did it's other sequels.

I also think this movie opened up some great doors for future Rodriguez Predator films.

THIS MOVIE IS THE SECOND PREDATOR.
