Adywan, you have gotten me hooked on The Empire Strikes Back.  I've watched the film in almost every way I have available to me in the last month.  GOUT DVD, your theatrical DVD, the 97 SE, and my old VHS tapes.  I can't get enough of this film in all its forms (aside from the 2004 DVD).  Not sure if that's a thank you, but it's definitely cracked open an entire 1980s childhood nostalgia for me.  So, I suppose it is a thank you.  I'm currently watching the film the way I watched it until 1992 - videotaped off of ShowTime.  Based on nostalgia alone, the original trilogy are the only films I'm willing to watch in pan-and-scan, but I've been a full embracer of widescreen from the first moment I knew of it.

Hmm... that sounds familiar. I think my own brain has said that to me once or twice. The Trilogy are the only movies that I'd want to see in pan & scan ever again, simply because that's how I watched them up until 1997.

I only saw the OT in widescreen with the 2004 DVDs :(

TIE's don't have hyperdrives, and it doesn't make sense to have them appear from behind the Star Destroyers.

He's back again? Yep, guess so.;) There was work to be procrastinated, so I come here...

Says who? All this based on one throw away line from Obi-Wan in ANH (you know, the guy everybody considers a liar thanks to the next movie, and senile thanks to the Prequels).

The same Expanded Universe that says TIE Fighters are unshielded, cheaply mass produced ships with no life support systems and no hyperdrives also say that  Vader's TIE  (which is smaller) has all those features.

Of course the original scripts argue otherwise (Leigh Brackett's ESB script for example has Vader drifting in space for a long time before his craft is picked up... though I suppose you could argue his hyperdrive, if he had one, was damaged or something... though a non-functioning hyperdrive in the Star Wars universe doesn't seem to be much of a hindrance, considering the Falcon's Trek from the asteroid field to Bespin).

The fact that the TIE Fighters in ANH were white/gray compared to the blue ones in the rest of the movies, made me think they were a different kind of model anyway.

If we thought TIE Fighters were just simple spaceships (only slightly smaller than the hyperdrive equipped X-Wings) that were launched from Star Destroyer "carriers" (or from a "base" like the Death Star) that would be one thing, but that need not be the case (again, unless we take certain interpretations from the EU).

The only benefit to having "pan 'n' scan" for me would be that the image is bigger (though you lose the sides of it). If your screen is sufficient size though, that's not a big loss. Until some day (in the far flung future) when I can afford a widescreen TV (and have a place to put it) I'm going to stick with letterbox.

I copy my response from the wishlist thread here for completion sake :

Bingowings said :

I personally don't see a problem with the TIEs in that Hoth shot because going from Vader's description of Ozzel's deployment of the fleet (too close to the system) the fleet jumped in outside the system but close enough to be detected.

That would give the pilots enough time to scramble to the fighter bay and launch in readiness of any fighter trying a break out or attempting to engage the invading forces as they approached the planet (so no need for the fighters to have been in hyperspace).

So I just got finished reading through all 730 pages of this behemoth of a thread. Good lord. Snowflakes on wookiees and blue-tinted fighters. Snow on Luke's back and shuttlecraft sizes. Blue-coloured Yodas, finally green.

(These are a few of my favourite things.)

On the very first page, I got excited when I read this, since my first post here was (I believe) June 6th:

Anyone that has contributed in this thread up to 12am GMT on the 9th June will get their names in the end credits.

I was all

:D :D :D

And then:

Anyone that joins or contributes after this date unfortunately won't. If you want your real name instead of your forum name in the credits then please contact Doubleofive by the end of June 2009 or it will automatically be your forum name in the credits

Then I was

D: D: D:

Oh well.

Awesome to see how little of the movie remains to be done. Best of luck, Ady!

Be sure to stick around and post in 2012 so you can get that you can make the ROTJ credits.

It's true! I applied to be an extra in the SE Cantina scene, but was turned down for looking too unbelievable.

So you were a shoo-in for the prequels then.

That's what you'd think, but when I applied, they told me I was "too realistic" and offered to make a CG model of me instead.

One thing I would really love to see (as a deleted-scenes extra, of course) is the "Wampa attack Echo Base/ Wampa pen & snowtroopers" abandoned subplot.

Maybe Lucas could release some (or the whole) footage of it in the let's-pretend-this-is-the-ultimate-and-definitive Blu-Ray version so to be revisited by fans??? :-)

Since we have costumed members doing extra scenes how about the known continuity error with leia's hand embraces han in the infamous kissing scene?

Is anything can be done as an arm in front of a greenscreen hugging someone?

One thing that is possibly impossible to fix (at least I can't think of a way other than building a new carbonite block and filming it) is Han's shirt change from going into the chamber and coming out frozen (it's an error that wasn't fixed in ROTJ either).

Enlight me boys..

Ady is going to recreate/fix the wrong shirt or han? Or a new carbonite complex? Or a new carbonited han?

Also ady will you fix the open set part located in the left upper corner of that shot?

AS we see here

You can clearly see the stage lights. If the snapshot cant do the justice see it in motion :)

I'm not sure, are they stage lights or the lights at the location in the story doubling up as extra lights in our world?

There's nothing about them that looks out of place for a hanger space assembled in haste at low cost.

As hanger lights I rather like them.

He's correct, most TIEs in this era don't have hyperdrive. More advanced model such as the TIE Avenger (which Vader's TIE Advanced fighter is the prototype for) and the TIE Defender which saw a limited run due to cost of production.

Obi Wan in ANH implied that TIE's don't have hyperdrive "No, it's a short range fighter". So that confirms it more rather than makes it untrue regardless of EU validation or not. Also, the shot itself is not of the Death Squadron coming out of hyperspace but of their approach to Hoth at this point do TIE units could of been deployed by other ISDs. I was actually gonna suggest having TIE bombers fly passed as Vader has not issued an order for the surface attack with ground troops yet because it's just prior to Ozzel's epic fail is revealed. TIE Bomber bombardment would be in order as the smaller fighter craft could reach the base and such before orbital bombardment from ISDs could come with in range... Then again this would bring into question why are there no TIE Bombers firing at the first Medium transport as it escapes from Hoth.
