Nah, Jeremy Brett is Holmes (though I love Mr Cushing in everything he does).

The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes is a smashing film but if Christopher Lee is a great Dracula he isn't really a Mycroft Holmes.

That's right, I forgot about the Brett Holmes. I still like Cushing better.

I thought Lee was great as Mycroft. It may have not been the exact character, but it worked very well in that Holmes universe against that particular incarnation of Holmes.

I somehow can't see Lee playing Mycroft.     Mycroft was rather overweight in the books,  Lee isn't.

Totally Gilliam.  I feel like watching my kids act or dance or sing or something.  You know it's not great or competitive or anything, but they're your kids so you can't help but watch and be proud.

Catch it if you're a Gilliam fan.  Skip it if you aren't.

Fat characters alwas get shafter! I read that Russel Crowe wanted to gain wieght to play "Master and Commander" because the character is written as a very stout fellow, and the producers said "hell no."

And sometimes fat cahracters are played by skinny actors in fat suits. Like there aren't any fat actors looking for work! There's no justice!

The Thirteenth Floor (1999).

Once in a while you get a glut of films on a similar theme released around the same time and 1999 was the year when the world wasn't real (or was it?).

Along with eXistenZ and the previous year's Dark City, this film tends to get overlooked for The Matrix.

While this film is less action orientated and special effects lead than it's three cousins it actually treats it's audience more like children.

Every plot is broadcast well in advance, every revelation is hammered home (Ric Olie style).

It does however look good, the protagonist spends much of his time in what appears to be the same Frank Lloyd Wright apartment that Rick Deckard used in Blade Runner (often lit the same way too) which fits the subject matter rather well. The sections in the thirties are stylish too.

While there aren't many surprises it's still well worth a watch.

I liked thirteenth floor but agree it could have been a lot better.

last I saw was 'The thing from another world' [1951]

Starts well but the monster is pretty cheesy. the music was also pretty bad - in that it's speaker shattering load when certain things happen - like you see the monster, yet non existent in other places.

You guys need a Sherlock thread...

I liked 13th Floor quite a bit.  I remember seeing the trailers and thinking it looked inferior to, and on the coat tails of, The Matrix, which is one of my favourite movies...  But when I got around to seeing it, I actually quite liked it.  I can't recall it perfectly since it's been years, but I don't remember thinking that the storytelling was totally overt or that it was dumbed down.

Maybe I'll have to give it a spin again.

By the way, what did you think of the final 2 seconds of the movie.  I thought it was particularly awesome, but I'm not sure if everyone has the same interpretation as I do.

A couple of examples of what I'm talking about, when in the '30's' he asks the bookshop owner for the science book written in the 70's,  we get repeated mentions of the 1870's (just to hammer it home) and later when he wakes up at the end he picks up a paper where we can clearly see the date and reads the date to us (just to hammer it home).

The film is full of unnecessary moments like that which spoils an otherwise rather nice and classy looking film.

Tombstone.

It was entertaining. Dragged on a bit too long IMO. Some funny/cool/memorable moments though.

Oh and since i havent been here for a while and dont know what people thought of Avatar. It was good but i was honestly a little underwhelmed by it.

It was shit. But for some reason everyone drops their pants and rubs one out at the mere mention of its title. I don't get it. Even let myself be dragged into going to see it a second time and still didn't get why the mention of its title causes mass euphoria in the general population.

Both times I saw it I went with friends who paid my way and absolutely loved it, so both times I felt obligated to pretend I liked it. I have never felt that way about needed to pretend I liked a movie when I didn't just because someone else paid for the ticket, but in this case it wasn't just that they liked it, but that they were practically buzzing on some kind of thrill high on the way out of the theater to such a degree that I felt obligated to be happy for them and avoid any negative comments.

Kind of like your friend who excitedly shows you his newborn baby and asks, "Isn't she the most adorable thing you have ever seen?" when it fact it is by far one of the ugliest babies you have ever had the misfortune of laying eyes on, but you don't tell him that you just excitedly respond back, "Yeah, she is a really beautiful baby. Congradulations."

Am I just really weird, or has anyone else thought that way about this movie?

Avatar is love it or meh for most people. Discerning film nerds tend to dislike it more than the general public. For me it was kind of meh....I mean the cg was cool and all but once you got past that and 3d the story was kind of predictable and the characters didn't have much going for them.

"Cromwell" with Richard Harris and Obi-Wan.

Not a bad film if you want to see the glorification of a genocidal theocratic dictator all in the name of democracy.

The first half of Last Action Hero. I've always assumed this movie was terrible and a torture to behold. I found myself really enjoying its campy humour and laughing throughout.

I've heard the last act is where it falls apart, so I'm prepared for that. But the first half has been pretty good! I really enjoy Schwarzenegger's humor.

The first two thirds of Dawn of the Dead.  I'm not really a zombie film lover (or a 70's film lover) so I didn't have very high expectations.  It's supposed to be a masterpiece but the best I can say is "meh."

I'll probably go ahead and finish it anyway.

Lion In Winter (1968) is such a good film (no back unstabbed).

Cromwell is very accurate on the most part (exploding cannonballs aside) it's faults are more with the narration which skims over the worst excesses of his character and whitewashes over the terrors of the Commonwealth, especially in Ireland as you say it paints him as a hero of democracy when he was a much more complicated character.

The trial and Parliament scenes are almost word for word what was recorded at the time.

Witchfinder General paints Oliver with more warts, great film too if not a little depressing.

I've been meaning to see Becket.   As for doing a Peter O'Toole/Henry II marathon,  I believe there are only 2 movies in which Peter O'Toole played Henry II.   I can't consider watching 2 movies to be a marathon.   You need at least 3 or 4 movies to make a marathon.    Are there other movies about Henry II.?

I think one actor playing the same role in two totally unrelated films is fairly unique, so I'll call my two-movie-streak a marathon :-P

I just watched (500) Days of Summer last night.

I'm kind of torn on it.  On the one hand, it was a pretty good deconstruction of relationships, and I have the biggest crush in the world on Zooey Deschanel.

On the other hand, Zooey's character in the film is a huge cunt that I wanted to punch in the face many times, and Joseph Gordon-levitt's character is a naive idiot.

Then again, I could say the same thing about many of my exes and myself in previous relationships, so I guess it was fairly realistic...?

I give the film a 6.5/10.
