So, Kyle Newman (director of fanboys) just tweeted about Building Empire. called it GENIUS. I believe hes seen and commented on Adywan's work too but I'm not sure.

I very much enjoyed the NTSC versions of both Building Empire and Returning to Jedi.

Unfortunately I have a problem; I live in the UK, and as such I require the PAL versions of the films if I want to watch them on my DVD player. Does anyone know what the significance of the 'IFOFIX' is?

If you're talking about the merged DVD that I put together, I mentioned in the readme text (in my first post) the purpose of the ifofix. It merely removes non existent chapters from appearing in the DVD navigation menu.

Without the fix, the DVD will still use the same chapter points that are on the original Miami DL PAL disc so it really isn't necessary to use the fix.

Of course this merged Miami DVD is in PAL format and the fix applys to this disc and only this disc.

It's of no use to any other PAL or NTSC version.

I think that you should just download the PAL versions anyway. As a bonus, the video quality is much better.

I see. Thank you.

No; your DVD player will play NTSC perfectly, even if it is not multiregional.  The PAL versions are still a good idea, as zeppelinrox said, because the quality is higher.

Author

Really? I already tried burning the NTSC version to a DVD+R and it didn't work in my DVD player, PS3 or even my PS2. Is it just the type of DVD I'm using?

Author
Time

It could also be a bad DVD burner. Missing ifo files perhaps...

It's hard to tell without any info regarding any errors.

Does it play back ok on the computer with VLC player or Media Player Classic?

Author
Time

Hmm. That's odd, I hadn't checked it in VLC before, but when I did I got the following:

Your input can't be opened:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://D:\'. Check the log for details.

But then, when I tried it in Media Player Classic, it worked fine. Any ideas? It'd be nice to avoid downloading the whole DVD again.

Author

I'm  not sure what that error means.

Better google it and find people with similar problems.

So you got the error while playing back the VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive, right?

It's real odd that it would be okay with MPC but not VLC.

No, I got the error while playing the DVD from my DVD drive. It doesn't matter, I'll try the PAL DL version.

is there another way to download the Miami Underground film Festival Edition  than alt.binaries ? like a torrent file ?

Author

Well, there appear to be Rapidshare and Megaupload links for the Miami version at fanedit.info (confusingly, it's titled "Jambe Davdar Original Trilogy Documentaries - Episode 2").

I don't know if there was ever posted a torrent anywhere.

For whatever reason, it is listed as EP 2 and Returning to Jedi is listed as EP 3.

Long post... but I hope you like it.

On the previous page, I had notified you all that I assembled all the extras from various sources and put it together with the updated Miami Underground Film Festival version which was a barebones DVD so that it would be a "Complete" Miami edition.

Nothing was re-encoded and as far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong with this DL PAL DVD since there is no negative feedback about it LOL.

Some of you will know that I been muckin about with Returning To Jedi Miami versions.

First, I did the same as I did with this one - I simply merged all extras with the updated Miami festival version to make a DL PAL DVD.

But in the end, I made 2 more RTJ MUFF Complete DVDs - SL NTSC and SL PAL discs that I deinterlaced, sharpened, adjusted chapters and encoded as progressive - the original RTJ, as well as BE, are both interlaced.

People requested that I do the same for Building Empire...

So I have now re-encoded and assembled 2 more Building Empire Miami Complete DVDs - a SL NTSC disc and a SL PAL disc.

Both leave the audio untouched, were deinterlaced, sharpened, have adjusted chapter points and encoded progressively.

A few screen caps:

DL PAL - Nothing re-encoded and interlaced

SL PAL - Deinterlace, sharpened, adjusted chapters and progressive.

SL NTSC - Deinterlace, sharpened, adjusted chapters and progressive.

It may be hard to tell the difference when displayed like this, but the pics are actually full size - you can compare them more easily by displaying them in separate tabs - just click on each picture :)

You can skip to the bottom if you're not interested in the finer details...

In this release you'll find:

1 - The VIDEO_TS and DVD_ROM folders

2 - Addition artwork (.psd files) located in DVD_ROM folder

2 - This NFO file - Please... Do Not Remove!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes from ZeppelinRox:

1. This is a combination of 3 DVD releases of Jambe Davdar's Building Empire.

The 3 Sources were:

a. Building Empire DL PAL DVD - Miami Version - I used the Building Empire

documentary video from this version. This DVD has the latest version and best

video quality available but it had no extras whatsoever.

b. Building Empire SL NTSC DVD - I used the DVD_ROM folder from this version -

since this is the only version I found that had it.

The DVD_ROM folder contains the following:

ESB Radio Drama

ESB 'Story Of' Album

Mark Hamill 1979 Audio Interview

DVD Covers

Video Extra

c. Building Empire SL PAL DVD - From this version, I used all menus and all the

extras that were in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Originally, I just grabbed all the best available features from all 3 versions

and put them on a single DL PAL DVD.

Since I was doing a SL NTSC conversion, I decided to do a SL PAL version too.

2. The sources were all interlaced so I deinterlaced, enhanced the image with a

bit of sharpening, and encoded as progressive while adding appropriate chapters.

3. Here is the script that I used:

TDeint(Mode=2,Order=0,tryWeave=true)

Spline36Resize(720,576)

FFT3DFilter(sigma=1.5,sharpen=0.95,interlaced=true)

converttoyuy2(interlaced=true)

4. Tools used were mainly CCE SP2 (4 pass encoding including extras), PgcEdit,

and VobBlanker and MuxMan. Oh and MeGUI, since it makes it so easy to get d2v

files and simultaneously demux the Audio and Video streams.

5. I'm not sure about the chapters on the original PAL version, but there were

21 chapters on the barebones DL Miami version (see source "a") so I inserted

additional chapters where it felt right - mainly at "screen wipes"

6. I kept the bitrate as high as possible and pretty much maxed out a SL DVD

(4,699,594,388 bytes) :P.

If it's too big to burn comfortably, you may have to delete unwanted artwork

from the DVD_ROM folder or just zip them up - but it shouldn't be necessary.

7. To summarize the differences between this SL MUFF Complete and the previous

DL MUFF Complete. This DVD:

- fits on a SL DVD (duh)

- was enhanced via deinterlacing and encoded as progressive

- has a sharper picture

- has additional chapters which are mainly located at "screen wipes"

From this DVD, I also stole all the menus. I believe Caligulathegod is the one

to thank for this - I actually included the nfo file from this DVD as well.

c. Building Empire SL PAL DVD - From this version, I used all the extras that

were in the VIDEO_TS folder.

2. The sources were all interlaced so I deinterlaced, enhanced the image with a

21 chapters on the barebones DL Miami version (see source "a") so I inserted

additional chapters where it felt right - mainly at "screen wipes"

6. I encoded everything at 29.97 fps progressive. Audio was untouched, since I

kept the same running time as the original PAL MUFF version.

7. I kept the bitrate as high as possible and pretty much maxed out a SL DVD

(4,684,915,690 bytes) :P.

If it's too big to burn comfortably, you may have to delete unwanted artwork

8. To summarize, this DVD:

- was enhanced via deinterlacing and encoded as progressive

- has a sharper picture

- has additional chapters which are mainly located at "screen wipes"

- retains original, untouched audio from the various sources.

Let me know if there are any issues with any of the 6 DVDs.

Edit: These are already online at fanedit.info.

Actually, all 6 MUFF Complete DVDs are now listed.

Enjoy!

zeppelinrox, thanks for doing this! I'll be sure to grab the NTSC version.

If you're getting the RTJ SL PAL version, beware that the rar/dlc file for RTJ SL PAL is wrong (it loads the DL PAL links)

But for now it can be found inside BE's SL PAL rar file (which has both SL PAL dlcs)

All the links are now fixed.

Just to be sure, the download size of each dvd is:

BE DL PAL: 5.60 gb

BE SL PAL: 4.20 gb

BE SL NTSC: 4.19 gb

The RTJ for NTSC seems to have downloaded the whole thing twice.

RTJ_Miami_Complete_NTSC _v2.zip

and

RTJ_Miami_Complete_NTSC__v2.zip

(the second one has two underscores)

I'm unzipping the second one to see if it works.

EDIT: Actually, while it downloaded all of the single underscore parts, it only has the ZIP wrapper for the double underscore. doesnt seem to be a problem, but it does inflate the download.

Any chance these might show up on alt.binaries.StarWars or Megaupload or Netfolder? I used to pay for Rapidshare but no longer since everything there has changed for the worst. It would take a month to grab these as a free user from Rapidshare - half the time they won't even allow a download slot for free users. Right now I'm trying to get a file and it says:

"The server returned with error Please stop flooding our download servers..
This is usually a temporary problem and can be solved by retrying the same URL at a later time or by becoming a RapidPro-user.
Do you want to upgrade to RapidPro?"

They are impossible to download from as a free user. With megaupload I could grab this in a few hours maximum, even as a free user.

The file on .info is uploaded to multiple places. using the downloader with a j in front, pulls everything automatically, waits to start the downloads, everything. I got BE and RTJ in a few hours, hell, I got TWO RTJs.

Oldfan: It is on 5 different servers. You can split the links by file host and only download from the servers you choose.

Personally, I always delete the rapidshare and hotfile links and only download from megaupload, "directhttp" (ie. multiupload), and zshare - in that order.

I find that my bandwidth gets maxed out that way - since all 3 are fast, resume downloads and as a bonus, directhttp and zshare allow multiple connections.

So when downloading multiupload links, I usually have 6 files constantly being downloaded, at max speed, with free accounts.

doubleofive: I had overlooked that the file name had a space in it. When multiupload sends files to rapidshare and there are spaces in the filename, Rapidshare replaces the space with an underscore.

The file name that I uploaded to multiupload is indeed RTJ_Miami_Complete_NTSC _v2.zip. But if you notice, there is a space after the "NTSC" and therefore the rapidshare links became RTJ_Miami_Complete_NTSC__v2.zip. goddammitsomuch.

And because the rapidshare links have a different filename from the rest of the files, jdownloader thinks that it is a different dvd.

My apologies for the fubar.

Fine by me, apparently I've got the bandwidth to spare. ;-)

DLed, burned, tested, skipping around both of them looks great. The quality isn't 100% because its single layer, but I've not noticed any interlacing or speed-up issues. It's just so nice to have a physical NTSC copy of these! Thank you so much!

No worries Oldfan :)

DO5: I'm really glad to hear that you are happy with both NTSC discs and that you had no issues :D

The quality is actually as good as it gets, as the bit rate of the original Miami discs weren't all that high either.

Of the 2 NTSC discs, I think that BE disc came out better because I used the default settings of LimitedSharpenFaster when doing the RTJ disc. This disc looks really good in Media Player Classic but looks like it may be tad too sharp when played with VLC. But it probably doesn't matter when watching on a TV via DVD player.

To sharpen RTJ SL PAL, BE SL PAL and BE SL NTSC, I used FFT3DFilter which is dog slow but it has the option reduce artifacts after sharpening. I was really happy with FFT3DFilter's output if not its speed LOL.
