Don't know if it's just me, but after seeing DE's version again, I think I prefer his camera movement just a wee bit to Ady's.  I'm not sure why, but DE's feels more "natural" -- perhaps it's because DE keeps the vane centred in the shot more than Ady?  I don't know.

Ady, is the motion of the camera a done deal, or are you still playing around with it?  Either way, it's a definite improvement over the static zoom-in on the matte.  A thumbs up to both of you for this subtle but great improvement.

Thanks for the info, Ady.  Unfortunately, Final Cut Pro 5.1 has no such hue/saturation control to manipulate each one separately.  I can only affect the overall color with the filters I have.  Sucks.

CORRECTION: After doing a search for "Final Cut Pro hue filter," I ultimately came to a tutorial showing how to do this sort of thing with the Color Corrector and Limit Effect controls.  Results, so far, are not as solid, but most of the cyan hue is drained down.

God i love controversy.

Please don't do a Purist version ;)

You can't see the lines until 3P0 is being dragged over the top of them so i have never been able to see why a lot of people think this is a mistake and something that needs fixing. Looking at that shot frame by frame it does indeed look like that 3P0 is making those scratch marks and they were not there before. So no fix needed here

I seem to recall watching that sequence going "that's clever, the way they shot it, it looks like 3PO is heavy enough to make those grooves". Don't edit out intelligent film direction.

Probably because Ady seems to have warped it to make it look more panoramic.

I like Ady's version better myself, and I think it would be a shame to throw away the effort that went into the matte reconstruction.

I definitely prefer Ady's work to the original shot, and would much rather see that new clip in ESB:R than nothing at all.

I don't like giving negative-sounding feedback for something I actually like, but I just wanted to throw it out there for Ady's consideration.  As I've said before, if Ady wasn't open to getting feedback, he wouldn't bother posting such things in the first place.

As I recall, Anthony Daniels is such an incredibly good actor (possibly the best the world has ever known, I'm sure he'd say!) that he allowed himself to be crushed and twisted inside the suit for those scenes. He then used some sort of self-taught massage technique to make himself normal again.

I always thought that Daniels got so bent out of shape over having to work with Kenny Baker that he literally bent himself out of shape. Rather than call for medical attention, Kershner saw it and said "That's perfect! Let's use it in the film!"

Adywan has a bad migraine and is experiencing what I hope is "temporary" blindness.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

If you can watch it on the ESB:R facebook group then i would recommend it as youtube video quality really sucks and has taken out all the detail

Nice test!  It is just enough to show it is meant to be a real object without being over the top and in your face.

Not just to show that it's MEANT to be a real object, it LOOKS like a real 3D structure!  Which brings that set to life so much more!

You gave me reason to compare the two and there are differences. They're both aerial shots, but DE's camera is in the front of the helicopter, pushing in on a point to the lower front edge of the vane below the gantry; while ady's helicopter is flying over the vane toward the left as the camera pans down and to the right. In short, DE is flying under while ady is flying over.

Ady's vane has also been shrunk a little, probably to allow for such a flyover effect, and to make the space seem more vast.

I really like both, but I prefer ady's shot because it's a push and a pan, so it's more dynamic.

Something bothers me.  Looking at this now, I'm curious as to the geography of everything.  So, Luke lands on Cloud City, and moves around inside the city trying to rescue his friends until he comes to the lift which sends him upwards into the carbon freezing chamber.  After round one of the duel, he walks down a rather short tunnel inside the gantry structure where he then gets blown out the window, and lands down on the exterior walkway.  Exactly how is this entire journey possible looking at that structure?  How does Luke get from the freezing chamber into at the top of the structure?  All of the landing platforms are at the very top of the city.  How does he end up getting further down and deeper inside it when the lift takes him UPWARDS into the chamber?  What am I missing?

Just curious though, but the part where Lando addresses the city, and we cut to the SE shot of the crowd outside listening, the over all contrast of that scene seems to be a little bit on the light side. Now I don't know how much real-time passes between that moment, up until we see Lando and company blast off in the Falcon, I'm guessing just a couple of mineuts. If it is just a few mineuts, shouldn't contrast of crowd listening to lando address the city be pretty much the same as when the Falcon blasts off?

Just an observation thats all....

Just reposting this ADY, because I think you might have missed it ( page 714 ).

Yeah this was debated (at length!!!!) around pages 450

It's a nice design but doesn't make sense!

He already did do a "purist" version--that's what the Theatrical Release was. No?

Short answer was that we just didn't (and don't need to) see every step of his journey from the landing pad to crossing paths with everyone else to the CFC.

Call it "dramatic license".

Agreed. Just like we didn't need to see Vader land on his SD to know that it happened.

Long time no post from me on the forums, from being just way too busy...

... but THANK YOU, Ady, for that last moment of the clip!!! I remember really trying to get this change put into consideration for the edit, regarding the engine boost! You're the man!

Despite the quotes that flood into my mind involving big dark blurs, big light blurs and hibernation sickness, that sounds quite scary indeed.

Hope you're feeling better, and please(!) don't do anything foolish like pushing your health to get this done sooner.

I am still reading through this thread after a week.  I am only on page 203 out of 718 LOL. So it will take me some time to catch up, but catch up I will.

I've worked out many of the acronyms used in this thread including GOUT = George's Original Unaltered Trilogy.  So I have a question about which source we universally consider to be GOUT.  Is it the letterboxed OT included on the 2006 release, the old VHS set (with the movie posters on the cover), one of the laserdisc sets, or something else?

Adywan, which source are *you* using for your GOUT?

GOUT is the official 2006 DVD release. There's an acronym buster thread, but I'll leave Moth3r to post that, as he usually does.
