Does anyone have any idea what could have happened to make ac3 encoders not work on my system anymore, I have been using soft encode for friggin years and then all of a sudden it just stops running, I did the reinstall thing already, no help, even tried wav to ac3 and that won't work either, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Soft Encode has a so called "dying bug" that can occur if you canceled a conversion.  Afterward it'll just keep crashing.
The fix is to delete two registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sonic Foundry\Soft Encode

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\Soft Encode
Remove these and it should start to work again.

HOT DAMN! That worked, although I only had to delete the bottom key, the top was not in there, the local machine one.

Thanks Dr. M

Glad I could help.  That's one of those things.  It's a well known bug, but good luck finding the information if you don't know about it.

A lot of automatic encoder packages that can utilize Soft Encode actually put an option in that allows it to clear the registry keys to prevent the problem... I've never experienced it though.

(yes got the email)
