George Lucas sends letter to 'Lost'

George Lucas sent a letter to the producers of "Lost" where he finally admits he didn't plan "Star Wars" in advance. The letter was read aloud at a series finale-related party Thursday night. Here's the text:

Congratulations on pulling off an amazing show. Don't tell anyone ... but when 'Star Wars' first came out, I didn't know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you've planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories -- let's call them homages -- and you've got a series.

I know unabashed Lucas-hate is the order of the day, but is it possible that he was being tongue in cheek to his peers? He's not above a little self-deprecating humor now and then.

Exactly, other things that come to mind that Lucas is messing with the fans:

-Lucas said about a year ago, "We all know that Empire Strikes Back is the worst Star Wars film!"

-And Lucas wearing a 'Han Shoots First' T-Shirt on the set of Indy IV.

I actually think Lucas is a pretty funny guy when he doesn't take SW too seriously.  He has that dry sense of humor, and many take it the wrong way because they don't know if he is joking or not.

He seems to be fine, and then we deal with all of this crap...which is it?

I'll admit it was really weird to see him in a Han Shot First shirt.

He is the troll of trolls that one.  That is all there is to it.  He hates the real star wars movies and will never release them.

Like when he punked us with the gout.  Nobody was laughing however.  But it was still a joke.

Actually, it all makes sense now.  Lucas is screwing with us just for the lulz.  Lucas probably checks in on originaltrilogy.com everyday and just laughs at our sad cries over something that if you really take a step back and think about, is actually quite trivial.  He probably just calls us a bunch of nerds.  Ok Lucas, you've got us.  The joke was funny.  NOW GIVE US THE DAMN THEATRICALS BUTT HEAD!  OR I'LL TELL GK AND ML ON YOU.

I can't find the source in the link, so just a question to throw out there... is the source reliable? Because from the sounds of it, it sounds way too much like some duck a jokester or GL hater could've written.. you know... it's just way too convenient. Might aswell have added "oh and yea, I intentionally created Jar Jar Binks as shitty, and added all the changes in the DVD to annoy the fans, those annoying buggers! But, hey, psss, don't tell anyone, heh? [it's IRONIC, you know, cus now it's OUT THERE, and I didn't want anyone to know! Now I'm pwnd, you got it, GL is PWNNNED!!!]".

... you know... although writing this to the Lost authors, known for constantly making fun of themselves and their show (at least towards the end), isn't beyond reason and logic. But that means... CLEVER DUCK, IS CLEVER!!!

Hey, doesn't Jorge or someone else "admit" directly in the ANH commentary that, for instance, the Emperor was conceived as a weak marionette of sorts back then? And all that was "pre-planned" was basically just the general story about Anakin falling into the lava or whatever?

ANH? Luke's father and Darth Vader weren't even the same person.

That's hard to say, since Alec's acting makes it possible either way.

Yeah, 'possible either way' in a retro-active sense.   Occam's razor can help:  Alec's demeanor in the scene - his acting, as you mention it - is because Obi-Wan is having to tell his friend's son that his father was murdered ,  when it's obvious that Luke just knew - or was told by his uncle - up to that point only that his father had died.

It's legit. It was even read aloud to the audience by Lost's producer. Lucas gives the "always planned" spiel only about half the time, depending on the audience. Sometimes the homey, flying by the seat-of-the-pants, making it up as we go- version suits the situation better.

Thanks.

Well, just kinda fits into the general image of Lucas not putting particularly much thought into any of this ;)
