I don't see why the films wouldn't be sold separately....Over here we have the Lord of the rings box set for around £30, and each disc for about £10....

Makes sense to me to have the boxed or split.

Who in their right mind is going to sell the OOT versions separately, or the OT at all? "Man, I bought this giant Blu-ray set, but I only wanted the prequels! Maybe somebody online wants the crappy old ones..."

;-)

The one time the OOT has been sold since VHS/Laserdisc has been as separate titles, so... :p

Because....there are people who know that market exists.

I'm that market. There's no way in Hell I'd even consider buying some uber-box just to get one version of one of the films.

I have all I want now - the 1977 version of Star wars & the original trailer for it. I'd buy a proper release of it if it becomes available - but only if I can buy it as a single disc.

The truth is, it's just not that important to me anymore. There's so much bullshit surrounding all things Star Wars - and there has been for years - that I've long since worn out on it. That's why the transition to NPR-only was so easy. A good, clean, deeper telling of the story from my youth. No bullshit, no versions, no lies - just Star Wars.

005 meant: What person would purchase a boxset of all six films, and then resell the OT because all they wanted was the PT?

The Market for just the OT exists, but probably not one for just the PT.

I know there's a market for the OOT, but this implies that there are enough people out there who dislike the OT and OOT as much as Lucas and are willing to buy an entire Blu-ray set just for the PT! ;-P

Er...you guys think there isn't anyone who would buy the 6-movie boxset and sell the OT?  There's more than one reason to show your kid the OT before the PT (if you are showing them the PT at all, obviously).

To be clear here, I'm not defending these people.  I just think they exist.

You think there isn't a market for people who only like the PT?  Did you know there are people that have only seen the PT????

To be clear here again, I'm not defending these people.  I just think they exist.

Would they be in their right minds to do this?  I think that was part of 005's question.

Would you reliably be able to find enough of these people on Ebay, craigslist, and through rummage sales and used book stores that you could pick up just the OT though it was released exclusively in a 6 movie set?

If there's a demand for just the OT discs, I'm sure someone will step in to fill it.

If the set costs $80, someone could pull out the OT discs and sell them for $60. Then they can turn around and sell the PT for $30. They've just made $10 dollars!

So I just need to buy 8 copies and do that, then I've paid for my set! GENIUS!

I honestly doubt it, no snark intended.

Three immortal classics, beloved by all.

Three somewhat derided hit films, liked by some, loved by a few, but I think those few all loved the OT first.

I'm not sure why I'm arguing the counter-point, because I love the OT.
But everyone loves the OT?  The few that love the PT loved the OT first?  I don't buy it.

Yeah never underestimate the vast armies of screeching kids in Target and their moms. Prequel-onlies exist. They are among us.

The James Bond blu rays trickled out separately (until MGMs problems) and I wonder why LFL doesn't do the same with Star Wars. They don't exactly have a vast, deeply varied catalog of beloved titles, you'd think they might want to spread it around a little. (And I think even the Indiana Jones trilogy is actually more like only 1.5 movies since he has to split everything with Spielberg.)

But the question is: are there enough of these people that are motivated enough to get the OT discs on ebay so that you can buy them?

There might be a few of these people around, but I think the argument is that there are more people who would like the OT only...

It definitely is the SE only. At least the special edition of that film is actually pretty good.

Sort of...until I realized just how much was changed from the original. I haven't been able to watch my DVD since.

It's not a special edition, it's a director's cut. If it was an SE, the people who did the new effects would have been credited. Therefore, there are no new effects...

If it was an SE, Lucas would explain on the commentary track how he really wanted Robert Duvall's eyes to roll back into his head cartoon style, and fight mutant baboons, but ran out of time and money.

If it was an SE, Lucas would not discuss the logistics of shooting real 1970's locations in the making of doc as a CGI cityscape is shown, thus causing my head to explode Scanners style.

So remember, kids, if you pretend that the movie looked like that in 1971, future generations just might believe you!

Where were you in '77?

Yeah, saw that, brings the likelihood of the SW OOT coming out on BR to next to nil, I think.

It's not really an analagous situation. The theatrical cut of THX was never on DVD, while the OOT was. No large group of people really care that much about THX and aren't vocal about its preservation, while the OOT is the most popular franchise in history and has activist groups and celebrity endorsers trying to get it taken care of. Don't get bummed out so easily.

Well, my nephews already think there were CGI dinosaurs in 1977, they might as well be conned into thinking you could make those vast cityscapes in 1970. And with just a tiny budget and youthful hippie enthusiasm!  (Now let's have another Young Indiana Jones lecture on the importance of teaching history. )

Well, I will admit, I did hope that the THX cut would come out eventually as well, and that never happened.

Here's what they should do: make two discs for each episode of the OT.  One disc of the "remastered version" where GL has done his "touch ups."  The other disk should be the ORIGINAL film, in the same HD quality as the remastered versions.  (Unlike the 2007 releases, where the original was in poor quality.)

And then of course you can have the extra special feature disks, in a separate box.

Essentially that's what all of us want to see (that's what the DVD set should have been).

With blu-ray they could go so much further (OUT, 97SE 04SE and even a 2010SE with theatrical versions of the PT and every deleted scene and out-take possible to find) but seeing as blu-ray is not the last word in digital media they will inevitably hold back things so they can sell us the same material all over again.
