He just wants to know if people have been discussing this project at alt.binaries.starwars.

Hi all!
I am in the middle of getting a newsgroup downloader so I can check these recordings out. I am an audiophile and LP lover so I'm very curious to hear what's going.
On the capture side, my own experience with the Goldring 1042 cartridge is mixed at best. My friend with a Linn Lp12 had one and I didn't like it at all. However, I have heard other needle-drops on the internet with it and it sounded great.
So i'm going in with a little bias... :)
I would love to make audiophile captures of these, but my own experience in trying to locate well-pressed LPs has been frustrating. I DO have a good "Star Wars", but both of my Empires are off-center so the pitch wavers quite a bit.
ABC, do you vacuum-clean your records?
Downloading,

Would someone be so kind as to share SW and ESB with me on Rapidshare?
... A problem with the other site ?... Or are you just asking for links ?
ABC, do you vacuum-clean your records?
... As I replied in the other thread: certainly not.

Hi - Not sure what you're asking me, but I'm having trouble just not knowing anything about newsgroups, etc. Is that what you mean by "other site?"
And re: "Certainly not".. I somehow missed that you weren't doing the vinyl transfers yourself. Vacuum cleaning machines (A la Keith Monks, VPI, and Nitty Gritty) are the gold standard for getting a clean record to begin with.

Not at all. Are you asking for links, yes or no ? Though as you said "'Downloading" in your previous post, seems that you don't need them.

Ah. That could have been useful for a couple of tracks of the "Audiophile Edition". Fortunately the recordings were so sharp due to both the format and John Neal's remixings that I made two of a stroke by borrowing mostly the medium range, what helped me a lot in the same time to temper the cracklings. That makes a more complete answer to your previous question. ;)

Ah - I was "downloading" a newsgroup reader. Apparently that is not what I needed to get binaries from newsgroups.
I am definitely asking for links. :)
There's a little icon wich looks like a letter in the top right of your screen. Just saw you were online right now and I would suggest you check it.

abc- I am a literal newcomer to originaltrilogy.com, as well as a newcomer to your masterful remastering. Tuesday night I discovered this site while searching for random Empire Strikes Back links for the 30th anniversary, etc. I eventually clicked my way to your original posts on when you remastered the OT a while back. I promptly located, and downloaded them. I have to say, they are nothing short of utterly magnificent. ESPECIALLY Return of the Jedi. That SE score was such audio garbage I remember it broke my heart listen to it in 7th grade when I originally received it from my parents for an A on my Algebra test... The sound quality of your remaster is insane. I have had all 3 on many time in the past week, but Jedi has been on virtual repeat. I absolutely love how it just feels like the classic trilogy, with the ewok song, lapti nek, and the sound is so warm. I own the anthology set as well which I used to make a half-assed quasi edit of my own. Since coming across your set I have deleted the other version of the hard drive. They are dead to me. It is complete bliss to have these recordings in such quality. I especially appreciate the time you put in to ensuring there were shorter cues instead of marathon long medleys. Anyway, enough of the rambling. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you for the work you did on these. Jedi is a complete revelation, and New Hope and Empire blow me away with new little details I hadn't noticed before. I listened to some samples from the audiophile edition of Empire, and was stunned. I'm actually somewhat shocked you were able to best yourself. Unreal. Anyway, thanks again,Take care, and I'm greatly looking forward to whatever project you decide to improve on next!!

The G1042 cartridge really needs a more neutral platform to sound its best - the Linn LP12, whilst awsome for Rock and Jazz, isn't particularly special with classical or soundtracks, and is a pretty coloured sounding device - I sold mine on pretty quickly. The G1042 can sound a bit too exhuberant in the treble region, but with a bit of fine tuning it can sound great, as I hope my Star Wars LP captures proved ;)
LP sound is so subjective - even the most expensive decks in the world only capture a 'version' of what's buried in those tiny grooves. Personally I want the most natural sound possible, and that I can afford. I'm not interested in Hi-Fi pyrotechnics, just something that connects me emotionally with the original performance.
I shouldn't really announce this yet, but I have a mint copy of the Star Wars LP now (my third copy of it!) and bought a totally sealed 'new old stock' copy of Empire not so long ago. I am getting both of these professionally cleaned using a Keith Monks device, using this company: http://www.cjs.co.uk/cleaning.htm
I sold my Garrard 401 turntable after being given (lucky day!) a 301 which I prefer. I have now fully restored my Garrard 301 turntable (not a cheap undertaking!) and cartridge of choice is now the famous Denon 103R. These releases will be known as the Star Wars Trilogy Vinyl Soundtracks '301 Edition' after the turntable model number. I just need to get hold of a mint copy of the Jedi LP now. I won't make any 'announcements' until I have the records cleaned and am ready to proceed. Rest assured these will sound much better than my existing (7FN) versions ;)

P.S. Please NO PMs on these. If/when they are done (I am still suffering from a long term illness) I will let the relevant people know. This 'preservation' release will be for those that ALREADY OWN the soundtracks (purchased!) but wish to hear what the original & long out of print release(s) sounded like. ABC will be the first to hear them once completed.
I'd like to echo support for the sound of Jedi. This was formerly my least favorite score, but I have new respect for it now. Doesn't touch Empire - and while we're on the topic, the OT Salvage Empire doesn't touch the OE's (though some tracks take some getting used to, if you're like me and you grew up listening to the SE version). But this 'Jedi' is actually enjoyable to listen to with the harshness and...I dunno, distance? distortion? hyper-reverb? gone. It's actually more noticeable once one reduces them to mp3s (necessary evil till I can afford/acquire a 32gb microSD.) I've only seen the original Jedi a few times, too (GOUT, TR47, EditDroid) so it's interesting to hear the original atrocious Jabba music (I really detest that whole section of the film) and, more interestingly, YubNub (especially the end of it).
“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
I'm glad the "Return Of The Jedi" score resurface from this tread through feedbacks !
Just wanted to share my thought that it's a real mess most of people look to know only the SE. The Star Wars sountrack Anthology should be the main reference if you want to compare my work on these scores, even though a bunch of tracks are still sourced from the SE, obviously.
One must know that the SE has very limited dynamic range due to unjustified use of peak limiting and compression, when almost no processing was used for the Anthology (only the analog to digital transfer, and very few EQ's).
The EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Score: "All-Sourced" Restoration & Sonic Achievement.
Yeah, it's too bad more people don't/didn't know more about the Anthology. It's a great set, and I must say I knew absolutely nothing about it until I saw 1 copy of it on the shelf at a local music store. I said to the clerk 'what is that?' When I saw how much stuff was on it (I especially enjoyed having the missing ESB music), I bought it immediately, even though that was a HUGE sum of money for me at the time.
I don't think I ever saw it in a store after that either. Did Lucasfilm not promote it properly, or did I somehow not get the message? :p
I loved the anthology. I remember I had to save up weeks for it when I was a kid. The when I finally got it I didn't leave my room for hours.
Well, I was a little late in getting it. The first CD I got was,
It was great back then, but I wanted all the music. So I went to a music store, and asked my mom to get the anthology. It sits on my shelf now, and it is in near perfect condition. I cherished it, and took great care of it.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I have the Skywalker Symphony cd as well. The differences in the arrangements and performances are interesting when compared to the original recordings from the film sessions. That and the SE are the only official releases I own (somehow owning the music separately from the film didn't occur to me for a while when I was younger). My aunt has the Anthology set, which I heard at her house a few years ago. ABC's versions are the ones I listen to the most by far now. Particularly for Jedi, I expect a lot of improvement comes simply from using the superior Anthology as a source; but that's not to downplay the importance of his EQ changes, which work wonders in giving a better sound.

To notice, sound engineer Eric Tomlinson used to record these scores through each parts of the orchestra (the famous 24-track tapes), and in the same time used to make a more overall recording: a "live mix" through 8-track tapes. The Anthology provides a lot of these live mixes using final 2-track edited or pre-edited tapes.
That's a good clue to know what to search in those recordings to work on- I didn't know when I worked on it, though the live ambiance was easy to notice here and there. Surely a reason why most of you are so impressed with the sound. I've gone a bit too far in "loud" and "highs" *imo*.
I still prefer my '77 Star Wars rendition, It was only a first draft (a first cleaning through equalization) and I didn't dare touching it further so it was good to listen. the tracks from the Anthology are the film mix, the SE are 24-track tapes remixes, but reduced DRange with processings.
On the original album, a little half of the tracks are missed mixes, and a big half are successful and awesome ones wich are the best to be found. Most of the pitches are wrong so there may be a lot of work there again to get that back.
Anyway I think the salvage version of "Jedi" is the best for discovery, the SW is the best for appreciation, and ESB... Pfff... Well, just keep it for the car.
Btw, the quieter tracks are very good I think on the Skywalker Symphony disc!
The EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Score: "All-Sourced" Restoration & Sonic Achievement.
Yeah, I especially like the Skywalker recordings of Yoda's Theme and Luke and Leia, they have a very nice sound to them; although I wish they hadn't slowed Luke and Leia down so much at the climax--the original has more energy by keeping a quicker tempo. The bombastic parts of the music aren't quite at the level of the London Symphony's performances (though still good), but the quiet parts are excellent.
Shame they didn't record the concert arrangement of Han Solo and the Princess. That theme (leitmotif if you like) is probably my favourite. The judicious use of flatted 2nd and 6th scale degrees is very evocative, giving the theme such unexpected beauty; a minor, melancholic edge to an otherwise major key piece. Fits the tone of the film perfectly . . .

If you're talking about the LSO, sure that I feel the same...! Perhaps we'll find out in 50 years they actually did ! ha !

Can you speak Bachais, please ?

Hey bud a friend of mine forwarded me your edits. I haven't heard SW yet, but heard bits from ROTJ and ESB and gotta say that they're the best I've heard. All though I don't agree with the way how you split some cues for Jedi.
I was wondering if you can PM me? I would like to ask you a question about the mastering job itself.

These remasters are simply excellent. They've re-ignited my passion for these soundtracks I haven't had in years.

I didn't do much in the way of comparative listening between the versions I have (or had, since these pretty much are my standard now). Like I said, my re-awakening to these soundtracks might be altering how different they seem to sound to my ears but if these versions can make me feel like I used to when I first starting listening to them, then that's the best I can say about them.
Bravo.
Oh dear. That is exactly what I need. Doctor ABC, could you PM me prescription and start the treatment?
Visiting originaltrilogy.com on 30th TESB Anniversary was a damn good idea. Now I have new purpose in my life.
:)
I don't have the links with me but they're easy to find... There are not as much "star wars remastered flac" sets on the web so you would miss them ;)
A B C,
I can't seem to find your work anywhere. :( I have TESB:AE, but cannot find any of your work otherwise.

Indeed, add the word "restored" (even if it's not true) and you should find them.
