Very nice, but it lacks 3D perspective - I'd really like a fullsize single JPEG to play with (perhaps one with and one without flare from the sun).

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Naturally I imagine this would play slower, but image-wise it looks a bit... plain?  How would this (and the preceding "R2 and C3PO approaching Jabba's palace" scene) look if it was early in the day?  Maybe not heavy on the straight orange hues (ala a lot of the Cloud City shots) but something more of a mix of orange and blues in the sky or something more akin to 7:00am in the morning?

That way Luke's entrance could be around (high) noon, with or without the added entrance scene as the follow up:

I could imagine seeing a mirage-ish, hazy form coming in ala HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, as the hooded man comes into focus.  Cut to inside the palace ala the original shot, with maybe the added bit of THM raising his hand, implying that (soon to be revealed as Luke) is the one opening the huge blast doors with the Force, soon followed by him choking the guards (without sticking his hand out).

Does Luke arrive later that same day?  I got the impression that the droids had been there for a couple days longer than Chewie & Leia who might have been there for a day or two as well.

The point is that leia is releasing han sometime in the night, since everyone sleeping.

Acording to the high exposure from the exterior when luke enters the sun must be at least 10.00

Macquarie made so many good views and moods from the palace which im guessing they were so awesome to be in lucas's ROTJ back then..

Im about to use them as reference to some shots i believe needs changing

Is there a consolidated list somewheres?  I am wondering if my "R2 D2 is on the stretcher, he's off the strecher, and now he's back on!" bit from the "Ewok/3PO is a god scene" ever got picked up.

The list is here:

I don't really add continuity errors, its more for the radical ideas.

Finally found the ROTJ wishlist.

Heres my 2 cents (from the wrong thread.)

1,

I would love to see Lukes saber cut THROUGH the baddies on the skiff in ROTJ. It always bothered me that the blade that can cut through everything is little more than a whacking bat in this battle. The tip of the saber shown cutting through them with some sorch marks would be awesome. The odd severence would be even better.

2,

Boba fett eject from the sarlacc at some point would also be a bonus.

3,

The tortured droid in Jabbas palace with the hot irons on his feet, the irons dont actually make contact with his feet (on a close up of all things) yet the droid screams and steam comes out. (personally i would get rid of the screams all together as its a little too battledroid humour for me, but making the irons make contact should be easy in after effects.

4,

Pity Palpatine says "a legion of my finest troops await them" when talking about the trap on endor, either that or its a pity that the troops on endor appear anything but his FINEST LEGION. I like his line, but it doesnt match the action.

Would be awesome if maybe some costumed troopers could film some extra battlescenes where they kick ass before getting defeated. Whats the 501st up to these days?

5,

When Vader throws his saber at the gangwalk displacing Luke in the final fight, maybe have Vaders saber return back to his hand after the throw? That would look cool, as opposed to just unnarming himself.

6,

Based on someone aboves comments, i like the idea of a rebel ship crash n burn into the deathstars shields.

7,

The second deathstar is supposed to be bigger than the first, maybe the explosion could be bigger too? (See the asteroid explode in Armageddon) can this be tinkered with to make it deathstar?

8,

New music at the end of Jedi is horrible, pan pipe moods? NOOOOOOOOO!!!

Thats my ROTJ input. Thanks for reading, good luck Adywan. The Force is already with you.

Also forgot, add ...

9,

To explain why R2 D2 never flies in the OT, how about this... In Jedi, when R2 pushes 3PO off the sail barge, how about briefly have R2s thrusters, pop out, explode or spark and then have him fall into the sand as he normally lands. This would showthat he has them but theyre faulty. As opposed to just having him take a dive.

Could be a great little bridge to the PT. Personally i was never a fan of him flying, except maybe in space. But a subtle nod to it could explain why he never flies again.

Your number 9 is already on doubleofive's list (with one difference being they do work because really that's the only time they would have come in handy in the OT any way if you discount Dagobah were the risk of igniting swamp gas might have put him off).

It is just this kind of revisionism that most fans dislike about the SE.

Yes, there are fans who want him to have got out, and he did, in the EU. But in the EU, he got out much later in the story, and after much hardships -- something that Boba Fett could do because of his hard character, skill and experience, not something that he did easily because he could press the right button on his gauntlet. When he got out, he did so without his armour, badly injured.

I think that it should be kept as it is. That would please both the purists and the Boba Fett fans and stay consistent with the EU.

The tortured droid in Jabbas palace with the hot irons on his feet, the irons dont actually make contact with his feet (on a close up of all things) yet the droid screams and steam comes out. I agree. I have never liked the screams.

Metal changes colour slightly when heated to high temperatures, before it glows. Perhaps the colour of the soles could be animated slightly.

I love this idea.

I think that it needs a little bit more tweaking to make it look more like a real camera movement and not something done in a computer.

First stay at the top, and add some acceleration. Perhaps some warping to simulate a wide-angle lens.

Thats a simple mockup. Im sure someone here can come with better results

And thats the point after all ;)

Thanks :D

Would it be possible to create some of the planned (and presumably filmed) extended bunker raid scenes with fans in trooper suits and rebel outfits (naturally adding Han and Leia would be a problem but ROTJ is missing a corridor shoot out in the classic Star Wars style).

Could there be ways of fitting Han and Leia into such an extended sequence and make it look convincing (mixing body doubles with taking elements from elsewhere in the film)?

It's such a pain that all we have are a few stills to imagine what these scenes could have been like.

edit....

10, (similar to point 5 ^^^

When Luke picks up the rock in the rancor pit and throws it at the switch on the wall, I figured, with a bit of re editing and maybe a new added close up of a gloved hand, Luke could FORCE THROW the rock, making him more Jedi like.

Im about to attempt a few experiments to see how some of these shots may work out. I'll try and up them on here when im done.

11,

i saw a clip pointed out on youtube of some srebel-ships blow up as they hit the deathstars shields. Not bad, but explosions were a bit puny, maybe add some ripples to the surroundind shield?

12, I read talk about Lando getting killed as he exits the deathstar? Not sure i like that, but still, one method could be to recut the interior cockpit shot where he yells "YEEHAAA" dub his yell with a scream (willhelm?) but also brighten up the shot with yellow to make it look hot. Then have a burning falcon eject then explode on exit. (maybe good as a bonus on disk)?

13,

When vader has thrown palpatine down the shaft It always bothered me that Vader doesnt seem to be too damaged to warrant death. Maybe add a few more sparks to his life support buttons and more electricity as he lies there just to emphasise that his suit is malfunctioning?

14,

just for giggles, when Luke removes Vaders mask, have Luke wince and gasp as if he just took the lid off a tub of egg sandwitches.

Then replace Anakins face with a Thumb-wars face. lol

Well, from what I've read the upcoming BluRays supposedly will feature with many deleted scenes. If there was one filmed (I've certainly seen many photos), I would love to see it. The Rebel commandos don't really do much on Endor, as it is. Having them take the brunt of the fight against the Imperials makes the Ewoks at least partially bearable...

I did a search for "luke hiding," and didn't find anything pertaining to this.  It has always bothered me that when Luke is hiding from Vader in the throne room that, one, there's really no visible place that he could possibly be hiding anywhere in that room.  Second, we really can't tell at all where he is hiding, and lastly, when he pops out of hiding, he's directly underneath the stairs, right out in the open.  Perhaps, something can be done to have this sequence make more sense.  Maybe change the background behind Luke when he is hiding?  Just something.  It just drives me nuts, and maybe it did for Marquand, too.  He probably looked at the set, and realized there was no way he could make it work, logically.  So, maybe the set needs to be altered digitally, as has been extensively discussed, in order for this to be possible.  Ideas, anyone?

The only wishlist I have for ESB and ROTJ is just to edit visual effects so it doesn't look like the movie was made 30 years ago.

I don't really want scenes added/deleted, and I don't want the storyline to be changed (especially for the OT), I just want the visual effects updated to look more fluid and to fix errors.

I know Adywan has mentioned that he is going to make changes in ROTJ, but I disagree with this, just leave the scenes as they are, it's a classic Star Wars movie.  Oh well, maybe I will get around to doing an edit of my own someday.

I can understand wanting to get rid of garbage mattes, fixing up non-linear movement, colour correction, and so forth. I just have no idea why someone would want to go back and 'improve' all of the FX shots with CGI.

I never said to use CGI on the FX shots, I just meant to do the things you listed in your first sentence.  You and I are on the same page.

mfastx is just saying that he wants all the rough edges smoothed out with the vfx.  Clean up the matte boxes, matte lines, optical compositing problems, and any inconsistencies or timing issues with them (an asteroid blowing up before a laser hits it).  That is all very easy for ILM to do.  In the least, that is what I'd like done, and to restore the original color timing.  The blue tint to the films hides some fine details.

I've just watched Return of the Jedi for the first time in months and I have to say: the acting, writing and story in this film are quite subpar to those of ANH and ESB. While updated effects will help, they can only help so much. I know that Ady has said that he won't be touching the story too much, but I feel that a tightening of the story and dialogue would make ROTJ a substantially better movie.

Author

Had an idea about the building of the lightsaber in ROTJ, if modified a little (essentially removing the dialogue) it could be done rather convincingly, all you need is a costume some bluescreen and some fancy editing skills. Render a cave backdrop and have the actor portraying luke attempting to assemble the lightsaber from various parts but failing, without dialogue this would consist of him attempting to assemble it and it failing to ignite, he would then remember yoda's talk from ESB, it wouldn't be a force "whisper" he's simply remembering seeing as he must accomplish this himself without help. He then reaches out with his mind and the parts of the saber start to float in front of him and combined with the right music the parts will assemble themselves and luke reaches out for the hilt and it ignites.

The face of the actor would need to be replaced via digital compositing with luke's, it could be done if the scene is set up in such a way that there is not much movement and having his face shrouded for the most part with his hood.

After the saber is built Luke leaves the cave, 3PO and R2 wait at the opening, luke places his hand on R2 and you cut to whatever scene you feel appropriate.
