New Bond film suspended indefinitely

Author
Time

EON Productions (Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli) released a statement saying, "Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on Bond 23 indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of Bond 23."

Craig adds, "I have every confidence in Barbara and Michael's decision and look forward to production resuming as quickly as possible."

The economy is even hitting 007 hard. They should start thinking about a plot that revolves around the economy for the nest film, if it's ever made.

The last time something like this happened there was a gap of several years between license to kill and goldeneye with Dalton replaced with Brosnan.

Hopefully this does not mean the next bond will have a different actor but it is entirely possible if it takes a few years.

Still i cannot believe with all the crazy money The last 2 films made combined they cannot afford to bankroll the next one.  that and that the film is a billion dollar franchise commodity.

No one would buy MGM even for the rights to the Bond franchise, wow must be a really bad market in the film business at the moment.

Besides i thought the whole new bond thing was to do these as real as possible, raw and on the cheap with little or no cgi.  No more invisible cars and such nonsense.

By the way a while back i read on some site it is also holding up the hobbit films, i guess new line won't pay for the entire thing, rather warner bros, even with a billion dollar franchise.  Greed is the order of the day, just like wallstreet.  Who will bail out hollywood?

Good riddance. I didn't like the new Bond's at all. Craig sucked, IMHO. I liked Brosnan.

I liked Casino Royale, but I wasn't too thrilled with Quantum of Solace. Felt like we kind of came full circle from making Bond more serious and modern to back to the crazy over the top antics of the Brosnan Bond films.

While Casino felt like they were taking the franchise in an exciting new direction, Solace felt right on par with the last decade of Bond, which was fine for a decade, but is getting a bit (okay, extremely) tired.

This "indefinite suspension" could be a very good thing for the series. Its attempted reboot failed miserably after a promising start, if it dies off for a while and is forgotten, it could potentially be all the more fun and exciting when picked up again several years down the road.

Casino was good, Quantum of Solace was not. I still say From Russia with Love and Live and Let Die are the best ones I've seen.

I honestly can't see the problem people have with Quantum.

Both Craig films are pretty much as good and bad as each other and both are better than average Bond films.

The whole Venice sequence of CR could have come from straight out of Moonraker and is just as silly as the exploding desert fortress in QOS.

The only Brosnan film I really liked was Goldeneye which was the first Bond film where I actually cared what happened to one of the characters since OHMSS.

Craig is a perfectly good Bond and much better than Brosnan. It's a shame Dalton didn't get a longer go in the role because despite the rubbish scripts he was much better than Pierce.

Live and Let Die is most definitely one of my favorites. Not sure if I like it more than The Man with the Golden Gun thought. From Russia with Love is also very good.

An edit of the two into one better film?

I Like most of the first half of CR, but after the game it becomes kind of dull for me. There is some good to QoS, but the casting gets in the way of it being a fully enjoyable romp. I like Craig, and accept he is not James Bond circa 1962, M is ok, and that's about it. I did not like the gags in QoS, or the production design. The David Arnold music is becoming redundant and forgettable.

The supporting cast did a great job in CR during the heart attack scene, and that did not follow to QoS. They chose to not ask the actor back who played M's assistant.  The humor was bland in QoS. I blame the Director, and the producers who hired him most of all.

I can live with the fact that Bond may now be laid to rest for a good number of years.  I would like to see them truly do the books, set in the time of the books if the series is to re-boot again.

I have a fondness for "Live and Let Die" and "...Golden Gun" as well, but they are Guy Hamilton's spoofs of what Terence Young had tried to establish.  Even his "Goldfinger" does it. They are fun movies, but I chose the Young version of Bond over Hamilton's any day. And, Lewis Gilbert was a tool! Just listen to his commentary tracks. The only director who has been able to carry Young's torch was Peter Hunt.  Sorry John Glen, you will always be a better 2nd unit man.

After Casino Royale came out, I was really, really, really hoping they would follow it up with a Live and Let Die remake in that same vein. Was pretty disappointed when Quantum was announced, and even more so after I saw it.

I loved CR and thought QoS wasn't bad. These were the first Bond films I really got into, I'm bummed out now that they're on suspension...

I used to play GoldenEye 64 with my friends in high school. We had a pre-guild thing, and 005 was my assigned number. It came upon me to spell it out ("doubleOfive" officially) and it became my screenname from then on.

I've never actually seen the movie "GoldenEye".

I will make sure that I see it then. Next time Spike or something has a Bond marathon, I'll DVR it.

No.  Do what you have to do right now (go home sick) and see it.  I also hold it as the best Bond film.  Though these high opinions being thrown around in here might be setting your expectations too high.

It was directed by Martin Campbell (Mask of Zorro, Casino Royale) and as far as I'm concerned- he should direct every Bond movie.  Because if GoldenEye isn't my favourite- then it's Casion Royale.

Quantum of Solace- I've been hoping for good news about the 3rd Craig Bond movie since my thoughts after seeing QoS were: If the 3rd movie is really good, then we'll have a decent Quantum Trilogy on our hands.  If it's not, then I never need to see QoS again.  But I think QoS was made of a different quality stuff and you can see this when Bond and M's duplicitous assistant fight each other, upside down, while swinging from chandelier ropes, above scaffolding, reaching for their guns.  This was a little ridiculous.

While I'm at it-

Someday, when I have a lot of time on my hands... Will attempt a Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace edit, but not along the lines you are thinking.  CR is such a great movie, but so terrible a Sony prodcut placement fiesta.  So first item of business is to De-Sonyize the movie.  Next: CR is a little long and QoS is a little short.  QoS also starts right in the middle of a scene- I would be curious to see how much better the ending of CR works as the beginning of QoS.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

My wife always got horny watching Brosnan, I'd get the payoff. Not so much since Craig!! Damn you Craig. I could care less about much else to do with this discussion.

Haha! Wow. Brosnan would be my favorite Bond too in that situation! Fortunately for me, all my wife ever needed was beer breath (yeah weird) and a few other minor things to go wild.

imho, its one of the worst.   It just didn't feel like a Bond movie to me.

one thing that really that really irritates me about the last 2 Bond movies is the lack of the traditional opening.  Why in hell did that have to get rid of that?   Also why in hell do they have Bond say "do I look like I give a crap?" when asked whether he wants his Vodka Martini shaken of stirred?  Were they just trying to anger the traditional Bond fans by this stuff.    Also, I think the game they played in Casino should have been Baccarat, not poker.

my favorite Bond is the original, Sean Connery.

But no one understands Baccarat. I've played it and don't understand it. Poker is a simpler game that people already understand, and is popular enough to be at every casino in America and covered on cable TV.

but Baccarat was Bond's game, poker wasn't.

Exactly. The game was easily explained in the book and it is so much more dramatic. Bond does not play Texas Hold 'Em!!

I also miss the teasers and much of the old feel.
