I have one question concerning 16:9 TV's. If you view the 4:3 DVD's on a 16:9 TV and use the zoom feature, do the subtitles in the bottom black bar get cut off of the screen?

I'm glad I did mine in 16:9. I'm also redoing mine since I have found an AC-3 converter that is affordable and is compatible with my Pioneer. So, hopefully, I can fit each film on one disc and keep the bitrates high. The dual layer burners and media are also coming out this year, so it should be quite interesting.

Hey everybody. Im designing some new disc art and cover art for my backup DVDs of the definitive collection. Im looking for some quality high res images to use, or if anybody has already designed some, that would be great. Im especially looking for quality art to use for the disc labels.

Sorry Im a relative newbie here, and I didnt know that was your avator. I thought it was just one of a bunch of default ones created for whoever. I tried to make my own with photoshop, but I cant seem to get it to load. Any help or suggestions would be appriciated.

To anyone trying to make their own DVDs, its worth pointing out that 1993 definitive LDs and the 1995 "faces" LDs both contain a missing line of dialogue in episode IV. C3P0's line "The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave." Is simply not there. In the 1989 Widescreen Laserdiscs, and the 1997 Special Edtions, the line is present. TR47s DVDs, being sourced from the Definitive Collection, is missing the line. I dont have the editing software to fix the problem.

Echo3, the avatar upload feature doesn't work. So don't think it's your avatar. It's the system. If you want one posted, you need to contact El Webmaster-o.

Does anybody have "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga" transferred to DVD-R? I have an original Total Movie DVD with troops on it, that I may be willing to "back up" and trade...

I have a question to those of you who have DVD burners, how much footage can you put on a single disc. I was told that current burners don't do dual layer and hence can only hold about 90min of movie. However I saw DVD-Rs at a store yesterday that claim to hold 120min. Either way neither seems adequate to hold an entire SW film so are these bootlegs you guys have on two seperate discs for each movie?

DVD-R can hold 4.7 Gigs, so depending on your bitrate you choose when burning, they can hold up to 6 hours. most burners have default speeds XP 1 hour, SP 2hours, LP, 4 hours, EP 6 hours. It just lowers the video bit rate each time. With XP, the bit rate usually stays rounf 8-11 MBPS. with SP it stays around 4-7 MBPS. Most burners have VBR (variable bit rate) that adjust according to how much is needed. This usually produces a better image than a constant bit rate. The less you put on 2 disc, the less compression artifacts you are likely to see. Most people agree that the difference between XP and SP is usually not noticable, but recordings longer than 2 hours and 20 minutes begin to have noticable artifacts. I have done alot of 95 minute recordings, (Mystery Science Theater 3000, and the quality is great. For recording animation, like Ren and Stimpy, the video content is relatively simple, so I record in LP mode, and they are still very good. But for recording complex video, like Film and sports, LP sucks.

My bootlegs have the each movie on 1 disc, and the quality is still great. It many ways it looks better than the LDs. Compression is minimal. When Dual layer discs and burners come out, theyll get even better. Ive made my own, but the ones I got from TR47 are slightly better. The bit rate my current bootlegs is still averaging over 5 MBPS, which is comparable to most studio releases.

okay so if I have a mac and DVD studio pro I can capture from the ANH laserdisc and get the whole movie on one DVD-R with good quality. If memory serves each OT movie is just a few minutes over the 2hour mark.

I would check www.dvdrhelp.com for more information. They have a free tool called a bitrate calculator where you can input the length of the movie and the audio format and it will tell you how high you can set your bitrates in order to fit your movie on one DVD. I'm looking at using AC-3 when I redo my LD conversion as it takes up a lot less space than uncompressed PCM audio and the quality is virtually identical as long as you use the right AC-3 encoder.

I use a Pansonic DMRE50, and it has a flexble recording opition, where you input the length of what you are about to record, and it will optomize the bit rate. to fill the disc. The maximum quality is still 1 hour, so a 30 minute recording will only fill half the disc. Its not always a great idea to absolutly FILL the disc, as the outermost edge of the disc is the most prone to read errors on DVD-R (at least that what Ive read) its never been a problem for me, and Ive also noticed that the last 3% of discs I burn are unfilled no matter what, and when I check the content of the disc with DVD Decrypter, thet ar usually under 4.7 gigs. They usually have 4.4 to 4.5 on them. ROTJ is over 2 hours and 10 minutes, but it still looks great on my recording. Getting a high bit rate is only half the battle, as many of the recording gurus at DVDRHELP will tell you, its there are many other variables. The hardware and software used, and how it performs to correct the image, and not lower the quality.

TR47 -- Thanks for the speedy delivery! Watched Star Wars (I hate calling it "A New Hope") tonight -- IT KICKS A@#!!! -- Video/Audio quality was far above my decent VHS widescreen set from '92. Supplements are a great bonus also -- especially since Lucas won't likely be using any of this material when he puts together the "most comprehensive behind the scenes look at Star Wars ever produced" (as the SE DVD hype machine says). The trailers are great examples of pre-MTV style marketing, and all of the interviews are informative and straightforward (een though Ben Burtt can be a little on the dry side).

I HIGHLY recommend TR-47's set to everyone concerned about the longevity of their VHS copies, cause you know we'll NEVER see the originals on DVD from Lucasfilm. I would've been overjoyed with a decent, widescreen, movie-only DVD version of the original trilogy from Lucasfilm, and if he refuses to make that available, I'm more than happy to look elsewhere. And now that I have it, I never intend on giving Lucasfilm another f#@$ing dollar.
