A decent solution to the administrator rights problem with W7 is to disable User Account Control in the User Accounts Menu.

I'm not sure where this leaves you security-wise, but as long as you have a decent anti-virus program, I'm sure you would be fine.

Yup, just hit the state button and type "uac", the user access controls should come up.  Move the slider all the way to off or whatever.

yeh, but the problem with turning it all the way off is that if you need administrator privileges to do a certain task then it just won't let you do anything. For example, if i turn it off i can't overwrite some of my project files. It's a really annoying thing and it was one reason i never upgraded to Vista and i was hoping they would have changed it in 7.

The user account you're using is a local admin equivalent?  With UAC totally disabled and using a local admin account, you shouldn't be getting any useage permission issues...

Indeed, just make your account an administrator account and possible disable UAC. Although I have to admit that UAC in Win7 isn't as bothersome as it was in Vista.

Also, are you planning on upgrading to After Effects CS5?

Have you tried running the programs as Admin?  That would give the programs themselves Admin permissions, and they should be able to overwrite things without prompts.

Or you could just upgrade to an operating system that isn't a bag of shit!

I run 7 here at work and have 0 problems.  I tried to leave everything as default so that i would have as many problems as possible so I can fix them before we switch all of our users to it.

User permission issues isn't Windows' fault. It's generally software that requests admin access when it really shouldn't. UAC is basically just the Microsoft version of the same system that has kept UNIX "virus free" for ages.

It really should default to admin when you turn UAC off on an admin account though. Don't know what messed up there.

Well my account is an admin account and i am the only user on the PC but if i disable UAC then thats when i run into permission issues. I just hate that almost everything i try to do i get a bloody popup box asking me if i want to do it.

When you've disabled UAC you can right-click the folder(s) that's giving you troubles and go to the Security tab, maybe if you set permissions for you as a user instead as an administrator it won't prompt you anymore?

You might have to do this before turning off UAC so it prompts you to execute this as an Administrator.

Also, if you keep getting popups, are you sure you turned UAC off correctly?

EDIT: Just to clarify, even when you log on as an administrator Windows will log you on together with two tokens. One with all the administrator rights and one with standard (restricted) rights.

So you normally operate under the standard token and when you want to install a program or apply system-wide changes UAC will ask for your permission and exectute these tasks with the administrator token.

That's why you get these prompts even when you're logged on as an administrator.

Just watched RedLetterMedia's review of AOTC... I almost feel depressed! It's fun (even if kinda creepy and overly long), but the guy makes some valid points and you can't help but love the OT even more, compared to its successors.

Ady, I know someone on another forum who had a similar problem when disabling UAC, here's what she did:

If I remember correctly it was basically my whole e drive that kept telling me "you do not have permission" as well as "you do not have access" to do whatever. That included renaming stuff, moving stuff and just in general it wouldn't let me do squat. In my humble opinion, while I understand mr. gates trying to move society to a secure ownership, there is still a large percentage of puter owners that dont give a flying leap about security and would prefer to BE the owner and administrator by default of everything without any blocks or tweaks that need to be accounted for. This should mean that you have access to everything and all things without having to rename or reown or reestablish yourself as having rights.

anyway.. i will stop my rant. In short, you have to take ownership of the directory and its subdirectories, and you have to give yourself permissions for the directory and its subdirectories.

So... I did three things:

Right click on my e drive / properties / security tab / edit button
... IN here I made sure that all Groups or user names had access to everything and full control. Highlight the group or name, and then make sure the "allow" column has everything checked.

Right click on my e drive / properties / security tab / advanced button / Permissions tab
... IN here I clicked "change permissions", then highlighted each of the groups and users in the window, and manually edited each to have "full control" for "This folder, subfolders and files".

Right click on my e drive / properties / security tab / advanced button / Owner tab
... IN here I clicked the "edit" button, highlighted "Owner (Owner-PC\Owner)" (which is me I assume), I then checkmarked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and hit apply.

THIS will stop those pesky access and permissions things from popping up. Let me know how it goes!

Hope this helps :)

You did. Running as anything but admin on any version of Windows is practically impossible. Just earlier versions of Windows didn't show that fault when you were running as admin.

Have you and the family begun to reconstruct the house yet, Ady?

I'm redecorating at the moment and covered in paint, lol. It's going to take me until next week at least to finish everything :(

Still, what an idea to decorate your living room with a Death Star close-up painting !!!

Aha! Well, I wish it still wouldn't show it, then. :p
