I thought it looked familiar! Forgot Voyager was using mostly CGI by that point.

Could it still work for viewscreen shots? Or Chekov's targeting display?

And Jeyl, Voyager was shot on film, but edited on video, which means we may never see it in HD. Cropping the shots can be done, as with the proposed prologue using TOS footage shown a couple pages back.

I know they were edited on video, but the original series was edited on film, which is why we can get that series in high deffiniton while everything else (besides Enterprise) we cannot. So yes, it is possible to crop those shots, but it won't look anywhere near as good as TOS grabs.

Hey guys, sorry for being out of the loop.

It took a week to get my new laptop tuned up. I'll be starting to edit again this weekend.  I'm going to need some advice for the Ilia intro scene. I've got some real tricky moments that I need some feedback on.  All that garbage about her oath of celibacy has got to go, but it's just not as simple as cutting a few lines out. I've spent way too much time tweaking this scene, and may have lost all the correct  story telling perspective on how it should play out. It's hard for me to just type out what I am trying to do with it, so script and visual examples are on the way for you to look at.

I have no real strong attachment to this movie and actually watched it with commentaries more times than without.  I think between us, Jeyl with the love, you with the edit, and me with the "cut everything", we can figure out if it works.

Could you start by explaining why exactly it has to go? Not saying it shouldn't go, but that exchange never really bothered me because.....I don't know. It just doesn't. Even when I was a kid who didn't know what celibacy was, I never asked.

I think it has to do with the fact that it doesn't really matter and never comes up again.  The celibacy oath seems like something left over from when Ilia was going to be a major character on a TV series.  Her having to take this oath and being in love with Decker would have made for great television.  However, she doesn't live long enough in the movie for her oath to have made a difference.  It's a plot point that goes nowhere.

If its cut, she goes from being a weird-talking alien in love with Decker but who is forbidden by oath to do anything about it to being a weird-talking alien in love with Decker who freaking left her on Delta IV and she's mad about it.  In the end, I think the movie might be better without taking on this what would have been interesting in a full TV series, but not important to a character who dies after 15 minutes of real screentime.

But that's just me, and like I said yesterday, I have no real attachment to this movie.  I just don't think it needs to be there.  The more dialog that we can cut, the better.

Oh really? You want to delete details about a character that don't really matter and never comes up again? Hmm.....

Details about Uhura in the new Star Trek movie:
She's a Xenolinguistics major that involves the study of alien languages, phonology, morphology and syntax. She has incredible hearing. She was the top student of her class, has on multiple occasions demonstrated exceptional aural sensitivity and unparalleled abilities to identify sonic anomalies. She can also speak Romulan in three different dialects.

For the grand prize doubleofive, how many of these said skills are actually put to good use?

AltUhura's credentials do explain why she is promoted from cadet to bridge officer so fast, admittedly better than the explanation for AltKirk.  I'm saying if AltUhura had magic alien powers that she never uses and was replaced by a robot halfway through the movie then vanishes at the end, sure, we can cut it out.  AltUhura has a few movies left in her for those to be justified.

Let's not bring JJ into this, eh? ;-)

But Ilia does use alien powers, at least in the Director's Edition. She uses her powers to relieve Chekov of his pain after being electrocuted. And who knows? Maybe Ilia telling Kirk about her oath was her way of stating to him "Not going to happen" in a professional manner. She doesn't really have a friendly expression going on when she says it to his face!

It would be a nice way of telling the Admiral that. ;-)

And Chekov can just get a hypospray and feel better.  I think that's what FF is going for.

You know Jeyl, it seems like you don't like any of the changes FF is making... What do you want to be fanedited?  :-P

Not like his changes? What gave you that impression? It's his edit and I'm anxious to see what he'll turn up. Have I not thrown in suggestions here and there about how I would edit things differently? Just because I say that there's one line in the film that doesn't bother me doesn't meean I don't like any of what he's going to change.

Relax. I'm not here trying to stop anyone.

TMP was on HDNet last night, and I found out too late to DVR it.  I assume it was the theatrical version, which I've never seen.  *sad face*

All I really know about the theatrical cut I've heard on the commentary for the Director's Edition.  It doesn't sound too hot.  I may grab FF's SLV sometime to watch it and maybe do a color corrected version.  We'll have to see.

That's odd. You seem to be a pretty knowledgeable person when it comes to movies, trivia and all sorts of stuff five. Now that you're here showcasing all this stuff about recutting TMP, you've never seen the theatrical cut?! This is so odd.

Oh! I found a little something thanks to the kind folks from Trekbbs. It involves dials on that little diagram that's in the middle od the navigator and helms station situation in front of Kirk.

Part 1: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/tmphd/tmphd0759.jpg

Part 2: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/tmphd/tmphd0760.jpg

See the little dial with the red center? It moves from left to right. Funny thing is, it's not a flipped shot. They actually changed the position of the dial between shots!

I'm 26, the only way I would have seen the theatrical cut is with the new Blu-ray and I couldn't convince my wife to let me re-buy all of the Star Trek movies to get it. ;-)

Oh, if you do manage to get the Special Longer Edition from Fan, let me know. I've requested the updated version, but he hasn't replied to me yet. :(

My dad hates TMP, so he never showed it to me as a kid.  I was reluctant to buy it at all, it was one of the last DVDs I bought just to complete the set.  Thankfully I like it enough now.

The reason I know so much trivia about Star Trek is that my dad bought me the first edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia.  And I read it.  Several times.  I only have this encyclopedic knowledge to a pre-Voyager era, plus I've seen all of Voyager.  Everything else is just what I've gathered from Memory Alpha and other internet sources.

I was a sad child. ;-)

I always liked TMP because it did focus so much on the detailed production design. I was into the look of the new Enterprise, and when it came out, it was so great on the big screen.  But the story always was a major drag. Star Trek II truly rekindled my childhood love for the franchise, and I was so glad they improved the sets and some of the uniforms from the first film, rather then re-do it all again. We can thank the lack of of a budget for that more then anything. I was 13 when TMP came out, and 16 when TWoK came out.   I was in the core demographic age group for the first golden age of  popcorn blockbusters from 1975 - 1985.  Some of the first movies I remember seeing on the big screen are The Sting, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, King Kong (with the Big Bus), The Little Prince, Towering Inferno, Poseidon Adventure, Young Frankenstein, Jaws...

Where are you getting that idea?  The theatrical version was released on DVD many times before the blu-ray and on other formats. The only original ST film not to be released in its theatrical form before the blu-rays came out was STVI.

I know what you mean about making do during childhood though.  I read novelisations of most of the OS series episodes before I saw them, as we never had much money to buy films.  I even read the novelisation of the Wrath of Khan before I saw the film.

Forgot about the single-disc DVD.  OK, so I may have had many opportunities to see the theatrical version, but never took any of them. :-P

I did not know that the theatrical version of STTMP had come out on DVD before. I know it was on LD and VHS, but I thought this Blu-ray was the first time it was on a small disk. I had to use a HD broadcast copy of the theatrical for my SLV edit. Now I'm confused.

Beats me.  Did they save TMP for last when they brought out the single-disc sets and made it the DE?

In other news, it looks like the windows near the docking port are too close to the port:

Maybe we should see them in the straight on shot further away, but by these frames we probably shouldn't.  It's not a huge thing, just something I noticed.

And what happened to the guy in the window? I take it that the person in the window is standing on the gang plank just inside the door, so why is he not there when Kirk and Scott walk onto the Enterprise? Where did he vanish to? It's not the young officer that greets Kirk. We clearly see him arrive in the turbo lift.
