I would have use ion cannons in conjunction with turbolasers but that's me... However, since the Falcon was seconds away from the asteroid field I imagine (making excuses for...) that disabling engines as a ship enters an asteroid field would not be condusive for taking a ship alive as it would probably get smashed to bits by stray rocks.
I've always thinking of that, since I saw the New Hope, how the imperials wanted to catch the falcon. That's makes sense. thx
