Big welcome, Samatar. And I can agree with just about everything you said in your post. Well written.

A very good post Samatar. And your idea of boycott is not a bad idea to me either, and you can ask anyone, I have repeatedly said I prefer the SE. So what does that tell you?

Jedi Master DJR what I can't understand is why are some people so upset with george lucas releasing the special edtions of the original trilogy on dvd on september 21st. I mean I think some people belive that the original version will never be released I think they will be some time in the near future and Jedi Master DJR I don't repeat every post I make it just some time I do. I just have an opion like everybuddy else.

Luke30, I don't have any problem with him releasing the SE's at any time. Nor do I think anyone else here does. The problem is that he is implying that he will -not- release the original version. Quote: "I consider The Special Edition as being the final version at this point. I don’t even worry about the other ones, because it went through a lot of incarnations to get to the final stage."

In relation to a boycott, if it was going to be effective something would need to be organised before the release of the SE's. Maybe a petition wherein any who signed it would pledge not to buy them unless the original was going to be released at some stage or something like that. Otherwise it just wouldn't happen.

Well, here's the description of Jabba straight from the original edition of Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker (whcih pre-dates Jedi by quite a few years):

"A great mobile tub of muscle and suet topped by a shaggy scarred skull."

That's not all, either... the Empire Strikes Back novelization describes Yoda as being blue and having long, white hair!

As for Lucas' statements... I'll be damned if I ever buy into anything he states ever again.

"Suet"? Aren't Suet Cakes what they use to feed birds?

Most of the changes were what Lucas originally invisioned. Some were even attempted at the time and failed.

I wanted to copy a post that was up on the boards at theforce.net from a poster named JenX who was attempting to respond when someone asked her why she won't buy the Sept DVDs even though they are 95% the same as the O-OT. Here is how she responded. The original question is first in bold...

I can't quite figure out how someone can have "no" interest in the SEs. The movies are, what, 95% the same damn thing? Surely the bits that were changed weren't the only parts you enjoyed?

I'll try and explain.

Imagine a really great meal. Loads of different ingredients wonderfully combined by a great cook. It tastes great.

Now, imagine the same meal, but this time the cook has added too much salt.

Yeah, the meal is 99% the same, and all the parts that I liked are still there, but the change has made the meal inferior to the one I had last time.

And I would have no interest in having that inferior meal again.

This just states it all so beautifully and in no uncertain terms.

Exactly. Greedo shoots first is like adding Tabasco sauce to a strawberry milkshake; only one ingredient, but it completely screws with the flavour.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

More like learning not to blink. Since though that change I don't like you can honestly blink and not notice that change. So saying that ruins the movie is such bullshit.

I wouldn't say it completely ruins the movie, but it reduces its greatness.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Exactly. It totally ruins Han's character.

It does not ruin Hans character. I have heard all the arguements. Like saying now he just does it in self defense makes him less of a badass. He did it in self defense before too, Greedo was theatening his life. We can still see him getting his gun ready to fire. I don't like the change because it does not like technologically right. It doesn't make sense that Greedo could miss at point blank range. It was not nessessary I don't think anyone likes the change. Many don't care, others like me dislike it, some downright hate it nobody likes it. Nobody except Lucas thinks the scene wasn't better before. He really should have tooken whatever time and money was spent on making Greedo shot first and fix the color on the lightsabers which would be one of the first changes I would make if I was trying to improve the Star Wars trilogy.

Greedo shooting first definatly ruined the movie for me i think...
and no its not bullshit jimbo... you cant always have your way...

1 it did change hans character.... like why in the hell would he wait to be shot at?!?!?!?! he knew it was coming!!!
2 it did look so stupid that greedo missed from that far away...
3 han must have jedi reflexs to possibly return fire that fast... lol

If that change made to that scene doesn't change anything - why then was it changed at all?

Wow what a great idea for a movie, you have to blink at a certain point in order to miss a cringe inducing moment that wasn't part of the movie for the first 20 years of its existence. If you blink a lot during Battelfield earth I hear its much better, and Gigli is a great film if you're blind folded with your fingers in your ears.

JenX is a smart lady, but I would amend her anology to say this: its like having a great meal put in front of you, all your favorite foods perfectly prepared, with a teaspoon of poop on the side.

No matter how good the meal was, would you eat it if there was poop on your plate?

Perhaps not, there were quite a few matte lines and background changes, especially through ANH. I would say about 15% of ANH is different, probably 10% for ESB and ROTJ.
