Angel, were those just filters, or something someone would have to do frame-by-frame to get the same results?

Not sure yet...

Im running more tests and pushing these even more further.

When i have answers and more examples i will let you know :D

EDIT: I can say that the only mask/rotoscope that i used was to keep the red lights in the clone troopers back helmets. Everything else came along nicely done :D

Edit2:

Its me or it feels more stormy now?

I suppose Lucas wanted Geonosis to look different from Tatooine by adding a thick yellow smog, but it just makes the scene look bland. By removing this beige effect the images below look a lot more interesting, nice 1 Vaderios.

It's like you've restored an old painting by removing the crap that has built up over the years.

Its a pity Lucas hadn't have made Geonosis Martian or Lunar-like, which would have looked more familiar to our eyes the way Tatooine does, thus making it more believable.

Excellent work again Angel.

The engines need a bit of attention but over all it looks much better.

Geonosis looks rather Martian as it currently stands but I liked the lunar idea we tried many moons ago.

Perhaps if someone put visible breath coming out of the unmasked characters mouths it would create the impression of a rocky world but cold distinct from the bright hot sands of Tatooine.

I really searching deep and new ways of CC with ways that can be applied as first or second passes and then the shot by shot rotoscoping CC. I have in mind what can be done with minimum masking work before post production.

Btw notice the pics i posted. The clone in the first image(red) and the clone in the second(yellow) have the same scratches on their armors(lol)

Those are really amazing mock ups but two things:

#1 The planet Geonosis with an asteroid ring around a blue atmosphere. I think the idea was to have the scape look more like Mars which have rich iron deposits so the Geonosians were using it's planet's raw metals that are plentiful for the creation of heaps of battle droids.

#2 The Geronosians would need to be a dark bluish color rather than brownish red because evolution wise it would be a form of their natural adaptive camouflage especially if it's an insect species... Biologically speaking...

Now thats neat!

The sky is blue but the rocks are dark brown.

Most natural camouflage is based on the environment creatures spend the most time in and the Geonosians spend most of their time on the ground.

Many if not most birds and insects capable of flight on this planet base their colours on where they land and not on the sky.

That said not all creatures evolve camouflage (we have to paint ours on) and some evolve the opposite so that they can be seen for mating purposes or to warn off predators.

Even im not to the bluesky concept

i still like the process. Remembering the dracula acid planet concept .Bingo im still trying to find ways making Geonosis morel like the Acid Rain planet that vader had his planet.

Im sure rogue leader can give more info for that EU factor

LV-426 from Alien would be a good template replace Giger's bone forms with the Gaudi inspired forms but it would possibly mean having to have the rings visible in black sky.

Well, Angel just dominated everything I have ever done to Genosis. 5 star work!!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I really like the idea of re-doing Geonosis. Looks so much better.

Because here on earth we have lots of blue insects in our blue atmosphere.

How are you doing the colour correction Angel? It would be very handy for us editors if you could let us know how all these corrections are being done. :)

This is what I keep poking Angel to do.  He shows all this incredible work, but we never know how he did it or if he would have to work 3 hours on each frame to get the desired effect. ;-)

How I would do it as a still image in Photoshop would be to first enhance the sharpness of the image (but not too much).

Then generate multiple duplicate layers (a layer for each different element you wanted to adjust) so you could adjust Yoda's head and gown, the mountain behind him, the trooper, the trooper's stripes, and various sky elements identified by the patterns in the cloud separately.

I'd then reintegrate the image and make final tweaks with colour and tone fields laid over blank layers and applying various blur techniques and adjust transparency to smooth the transition between adjusted elements.

With this result (which isn't as good but only took me about 2 hours) :

Bingo Version

This could be done in motion by rotoscoping those elements and treating them in the same way but it would take forever.

It would be like hand tinting a monochrome film.

People have been doing that since the dawn of cinema but it's not an advisable method for one person unless you are a monk with a team of novices waiting to take over the task when you are reunited with the infinite.

If there is a batch process software solution I'd be as interested in it as I would be in a similar process for making anaglyphic 3D movies.

I'd be a bit worried if there was such a system. If machines could do that then none of us would be here, possibly.

Too Clever to make films look better

@005: Angels have secrets :P and for the love of Zod.. not 3 hours... that was too much ;P

@Bingo:Thats why im trying to find ways that generate some global results without separate elements. Only in tricky circumstances mask or FX are added.

SSWR: thanks matey. Really hope to see some new concepts from you in motion :D

I really don't understand why you're so secretive about color correction. People aren't going to steal jobs from you if you give them Photoshop tips.

Author

It's not just colour correction it's much more complicated (something more a kin to an art or at least a craft than a process).

I for one am a bit of a hippy when it comes to showing people how I do what I can do (even if it's not as good as other postees on these threads) but some people want to keep a few of their abilities to themselves for reasons I can't fathom.

I don't have any problem with keeping your stuff secret.  It can be used against you.

Secrets? That seems very un-you.

Well, there are secrets...and then there are secrets.

I added the italics for emphasis.  People often uses emphasis when they want to make things really clear.
