Arguably, the defense of this nation defends you whether you like it or not, because it's defending a whole nation and not just a single person.  It's a "national" issue and it's provided for in the Constitution.

Healthcare is a "personal" issue because the fees are being paid one patient at a time.  90% of the people paying for it won't be protected by it.  It's definitely a "Person A makes Person B pay for Person C" proposition.  If person or People A care so much about People C, then let them pay for them and leave Person B (that's me) alone.

What about the health of the nation?

I wouldn't want to pick up a virus and possibly die from it because someone down the line wants to save a bit of money by not paying for having their infection treated (or they just can't afford it).

Similarly I don't want to pay more on my electricity bills because some of the people who work at some of the power stations are falling sick because they are skimping on their health insurance.

Disease should be treated like any other invader.

If China invaded the US I doubt if the American people would stand for a policy that went along the lines of "You can buy a gun and kick the guys out of your house, hope some charitable rich guy will get a group of mercenaries together or sign up to our paid militia plan and if your personal invasion reaction needs meet our criteria we will send in someone in to flush the invaders out of your house only".

Health care is exactly like defense, it effects all of us and to be effective it needs to have a co-ordinated and universal approach to handling it.

If it's to be a pick and choose thing on the war against disease it should be a pick and choose thing on the war against people with bombs.
