"Star Wars" or "A New Hope" or "Episode IV" or "The Original One" or "Star Wars 1977" and why?

I prefer "A New Hope".  There, I've come out and said it.  Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in full or ANH in short.  I suspect many of you will stick by simply "Star Wars" and I can respect that.  But for myself, I think referring to "Star Wars" without any qualifiers always leads the listener to wonder what exactly someone means when you say it.  And saying "The First One" always makes people guess from context whether you mean A New Hope or The Phantom Menace.

My theory is that the rest of the Star Wars fanbase, those snot-nosed, Prequel lovin', baby-seal-clubbin' losers prefer "A New Hope" as well, and we in the OTT community try to put as much distance between us and them as possible and that is how many of us have arrived at "Star Wars."  But, I'm following Nanner's example and being an uncomformist (am I doing that right?) and I'm just going to stick with "A New Hope" from now on.

Usually if I say "it's like in Star Wars when..." people know what I mean. The reason being that the PT isn't considered "Star Wars" but "Episode whatever", and ESB and ROTJ are known simply by their respective titles. It's only the super-fanboys that have the gall to ask "Do you mean A NEW HOPE??" No asshole, I mean Star Wars, it's one of the most important films in American history.

It reflects the marketing of the films. For almost 30 years "Star Wars" was "Star Wars", and the two sequels were Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. And from the moment the prequels came out they were referred to as "Episode I, II, III", not "Phantom Menace" or "Attack of the Clones". Even when SW was re-released in 1997, all the marketing was "Star Wars" not "A New Hope" or "Episode IV." That only happened really in the post-1999 era, and 1) most people don't respect the prequels enough to re-orient the entire titlings, and 2) it's a lot of work to undo 25 years or so of historical entrenchment.

So for me and for most people, "Star Wars"="Star Wars".

Actually it was just Star Wars when it first came out in 1977 they didnt change the title until Lucas released the Star Wars trilogy in 97 i hate the 2004 editions why couldnt Lucas just kept his creation the way it was but i have the Origianl Trilogy and i wont watch the 2004 Special Editions the Star Wars trilogy was perfect the way it was and didnt need changing.

It was the Episode subtitle on the 1978 re-release and all of the home video releases.  Not that that necessarily changes your answers, but the subtitle was around for all but one year of the 33 year history of "that movie."  It's not like George invented it for the Special Editions or for the Prequels.

It's "Star Wars" to me. And the other two are "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."

That's what my VHS tapes and paperback novelisations said in the mid-80s, and I'm sticking to it.

Dude, I have to say I love your long sentences.

Anyway, I just refer to it as Revenge of the Sith II.  Seems to go over fine.

It was actually added on the 1981 re-release

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Are you sure?  Either way- 1978 or 1981... it's been around for a while.

It was the 81, (since that was the first post-episode V release) but yeah it's old and yet for a long time it never seemed to stick, even the 1997 version didn't have it in any of the advertising. Only now have I started hearing it out loud, from present-day kids (which is perfectly understandable) and adult weirdos (which is less so.)

I call it "Meh" because that is what a moderator at theforce.net once called it. If true Star Wars fans think it is meh, then who am I to argue?

BTW, in that same thread, someone posted a hysterical satirical defense of Star Wars. His defense took the form of a faux critique. Among the many highlights of this post, the poster asked, in regard to the Obi-Wan/Vader lightsaber duel, "Where is the twirling??". Shockingly, the post was deleted. I would love to read that post again, but my searches on the Wayback Machine have yielded nothing. But make no mistake, it was the post of the decade.

The movie that won all those Academy Awards, including being nominated for Best Picture, was called "Star Wars".  How many times in history has a movie garnered a slew of Academy Awards, and then years later it's name changed? That's just plain wierd.

"The Godfather" didn't change names just because some half-baked saga sprouted up afterwards.

There's only one film I'm interested in and it came out in 1977.  I use the title that was in the theater when I was 15 and on the one-sheet I had hanging on the wall in my bedroom - Star Wars.

If a person I'm speaking with asks which film I'm talking about, then we're most likely not on the same wavelength anyway, so we should move on to a different topic.  I occasionally refer to it as Star Wars77, but only if I'm trying to address a certain time frame or version.

My go-to for Star Wars, the NPR version, also refers to it by its original, singular title -  Star Wars. That's all there is in my world.

It'll always be Star Wars to me and that's also how it's known to at least 90% of the non-fan community.

When I was little I used to correct my dad when he just called it Star Wars... haha. I usually just say that myself now, though.

Same here. I've never said "A New Hope" out loud that I can remember, though I have sometimes said Episode IV out loud. Sometimes I type ANH in emails and fora.

I refer to it by a combination of everything listed on this thread.  Sometimes its "Star Wars.  The first one.  The real first one."  I call it "A New Hope" when I'm feeling saga-ist, and ANH whenever we talk about it here.  Occasionally I call it "Episode IV", but that's rare, while the Prequels are normally called by their Episode numbers and Empire and Jedi are referred to as "Empire" and "Jedi".

As a kid, I never really put together that "A New Hope" was supposed to be the subtitle of "Star Wars".  I always went by what was on the box.

I really call it "Star Wars", but I don't mind "A New Hope" as that was the title of the movie in 1981 (they added it before Return of the Jedi and therefore the trilogy had been completed).  Granted, it was the first bit of re-visionism, but it didn't change the plot of the movie, so I'll let it slide.
