'Friday the 13th Part V - A New Beginning

(The Terminally Traumatized Tommy Edition)’

The rough draft of this edit is already finished. Currently myself and my editing partner, Terminally12 (who together comprise the fledging staff of our jointly created online fan-editing production company “SubStream Studios”) are up to our necks in post-production style editing tweaks and assorted minute sequence refinements.

The original motivating factor for this particular fan edit was to create a suitable companion piece to our rather ambitious and long-in-development ‘Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter: Grusomely Grotesque Grindhouse Edition’.

We had initially planned on knocking this sucker out in a couple of nights, just for fun, almost like a bonus feature for the other edit. As so often happens with this type of project, the pixie-esque creative muses from beyond the realms of quantifiable time and space — had their own unique take on things.

Before we even had any clue as to what, exactly, we had gotten ourselves into,  a little over a week into the initial “heavy editing phase”, this whimsically planned little “one-off project” had somehow morphed into a full-blown mini-epic seemingly of it’s own volition.

A mere days before we began this edit, we had nearly completed principal editing work on a unique “extended edition/true fan edit” of Don Coscarelli’s 1979 exploitation masterpiece ‘Phantasm’…Well, somehow or other, the dream-logic and nightmarish qualities so intrinsic to that particular cult classic have seemed to somehow bleed into and have virtually overtaken the mood and flow of this current edit. It’s difficult to put into words what is happening with this project, to be perfectly honest. It certainly is unique, I’ll give it that.

Here’s a brief list of some of the changes we’ve made, but this list will in no way come even close to conveying the strange mood and eerie flavor of this edit, nor is it even close to a comprehensive list of all the countless trims & additions we’ve made to the film overall:

  • The theatrical trailers for the first five films play out in quick succession as “coming attractions” before the film proper actually begins. These will be encoded to play out as part of the main feature, not as “extras”, but we plan to map out the menu so that you can skip this section via “scene selection” for those who prefer to do so — however this is not recommended, as you can’t exactly skip the opening trailers at a grindhouse film festival showing at the Alamo Draft House, for example (unless you skipp off to the concessions or duck into the latrine).

  • The gravediggers have been cut from the picture.

  • The character of Roy the paramedic has been virtually cut from the picture save a brief appearance as an un-named, unimportant background character.

  • Tommy has more hallucinations and nightmares.

  • Jason himself is now the actual killer in the film.

  • Many deaths and dramatic confrontations have been tightened for greater emotional impact and enhanced for more modern cinematic sensibilities

  • Most of the campy dialogue has been trimmed to better facilitate a more serious tone and overall darker feel to the picture

  • Virtually all camera shots in inwhich the killer’s right eye is visible have been deleted, to better maintain continuity with Jason’s previously sustained cranial damage as depicted in the fourth film

  • many more twists, turns and surprises lie in store that we shan’t give away at this time.

We have set a tentative online release date of January 10 before we unleash this beast of a fan-edit upon the unsuspecting public…

Well, folks...my editing partner (Terminally12) and I recently completed principal editing work on this massive undertaking sometime early last week.

Then...we hit a snagg. Though the edit itself was essentially finished, we had incorperated scores of dissolves, blends, and fade-out effects utilising our newly mastered (just barely mastered) womble software to enhance and more seamlessly integrate our cuts. Unfortunately, we hadn't anticipated the degree to which this would effect the audio synching up properly to the video...

So, though the edit itself LOOKS fantastic (in my perhaps not-so-humble opinion), the audio was out-of-synch with the video for the duration of the picture.

We are currently undertaking the necessary steps to rectify this problem. One of Terminally12's co-workers has offered to synch-up the audio to the video in 30-minute increments, untill the picture is entirely synched (we hope).

As it stands, it does't appear feasible to meet our projected January 10 deadline as an online release date.

But we certainly are not prepared to give up on this labor of love, not by a longshot. We hope to have the project ready for release within the next couple of weeks, hopefully sooner.

I hesitate to add that this is not merely a fan-edit for fans of the 'Friday the 13th' films. This is also a rather ambitious exercise in film-editing experimentation from two "craftsmen" relatively new to the art. Our goal was to take a film generally regarded as a "piece of garbage", and possibly elevate it to the level of an interesting, if flawed, surrealistic & nightmarishly experimental psychological thriller.

One example --- during a scene inwhich the Tommy character is staring at his own reflection in the blade of his trusty pocket knife, we waited untill the nose of his face within the reflection reached the exact middle of the blade, next we inserted a shot from Part IV depicting a bloody machete falling to the ground in slow-motion, then cut back to Tommy staring at his reflection in the blade. The scene is meant to be symbolic while also hinting at Tommy's fragile mental state, playing out as a passing vision within Tommy's mind as his nightmares are beginning to intrude upon his waking reality.

This particular out-of-left-field moment was somewhat Argento-inspired, particularly the odd little sequence from his 'Phenomena' inwhich a sewing needle falls in slow-motion, landing in a ball of yarn, without any subsequent heavy-handed explanation as what, exactly, this visual is supposed to represent to the average viewer. It is up to each viewer's individual interpretation as to what such seemingly out-of-place imagery is supposed to represent within the greater context of the whole film.

We have many more such moments included within this rather unique fan edit.

We hope at least some of you all will enjoy it, as we certainly enjoyed the admittedly arduous process of putting this thing together.

Thanks for the interest!

We hope to have it ready very, very soon. The bulk of the edit itself has been done for quite some time now, presently it's just a matter of sorting out the audio-synch issues, we've already got somebody working on that for us, and are patiantly waiting to hear back from him...

I'm also looking forward to seeing this edit, out of curiosity how is it coming along? The reason why I'm wondering is because I'm also a fan of Friday the 13th, and I'm actually a moderator on a Friday the 13th forum.

I hope to see this version of Part 5 come to fruition.

Sadly, I have to say I stopped watching this edit after 8-9 minutes because of a technical issue: the audio is half a second late on the video, which is very distracting. So it seems the synching problem mentionned in a previous post has not been fully resolved after all.

Sorry, I was looking forward to watching this creative edit and spent hours downloading it. I'm sure the editors had good intentions but I couldn't see myself watching a whole movie out of synch. Again, sorry ;(

i watched this fan-edit and i did not have any sync issues i burnt the files to a disc and watched it i thought it was a great fan-edit

i went back and looked watched the the first 8-9 minutes of the movie this part of the of the fan edit is still in the trailer segment of the film there again i did not notice any sync issues movie plays out rather well

I went back too and the sync is still off up to the end of the trailer part. Once the movie really starts, you're right: the synch is perfect. I, too, had burnt it on a blank DVD. Strange :-/

it is strange that yours is off during the trailer segment i would like to know what you think of the edit after you finishing watching it i felt that the editors pulled it off rather well making jason the killer instead of roy

This movie is my least favorite out of the entire series and I have actually thought of doing my own edit to remove the entire “fake Jason” subplot for my own personal enjoyment of the series as a whole. That being said I would love to see this just so to see the black sheep of the franchise become a true sequel. Any updates? It looks like this topic has been dead for quite a while.

This edit is fully completed, but the only way to possibly get it now is through the torrent, and no one seems to have seeded it in years.
