xhonzi, this is perfect. Putting Anakin and Padme out of harm's way as it happened in the movie denied the story this angle.

Padme, at least in my idea of who the character is, wouldn't allow herself to fall for Anakin based upon attraction alone. She would need another reason, a much more powerful reason, to "break the rules".

Matter of fact, Han grew on Leia because he was willing to do anything at all to keep her safe - rushing headlong into a stormtrooper squad, flying into an asteroid field, attacking a star destroyer, anything.

Han's motivations are interesting because he claims he did all that for the money.  That he is nothing more than an immoral mercenary in it for purely selfish reasons.  Which he was at first.  The thing is nobody knew when they saw star wars that he would show up and save Luke.  The greedo scene is supposed to show just how much of a gunslinger type character he is and then that scenes changes our opinion of him.

Only in the special edition it is ruined because greedo shoots first.

I think Han was attracted to Leia because she was an unavailable women as far as social status goes.  Alderaanian royalty with an underworld criminal with a death mark.

The fact that Anakin and Padme were forbidden to be together made being together desirable.  Stupid Jedi and their rules.  You wonder how the order ever lasted for a thousand years or more.
